The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind is an indie puzzle game created by Delirium Studios and released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS eshop. In the game, you play as Baron Von Sottendorff, an early 20th century aristocrat. Unbeknownst to the Baron, he is actually trapped within his own mind, where the game takes place. It seems something happened in his past to break his grip on reality…as a result, his memories are buried and scrambled. It is our job to help him sort out his brain and discover what happened.

To do this, we need to guide him through his mansion…

…well, his twisted, fragmented recollection of his mansion. It turns out, his memory is so messed up, he can’t remember the layout correctly, making navigation a little confusing. The mansion is represented on a grid, where each individual room can be moved around until doors can be aligned to allow him passage. In this manner, we need to guide him through each stage, collecting memories to unlock his past.

Tell me more about the Baron!
He does not speak in the game, but he is animated with a ton of personality and I can say with confidence that he is a cool dude.

What else is in the game, besides the puzzle element?
There is a lot of platforming which can be hit or miss. Additionally, in the words of the developer’s website:

Is there a story?
Yes, there is a pretty simple story that we uncover as we piece together more of the Baron’s memories. To quote the developer’s website again, the game features a “moving story line.” And you know what, I’ll vouch for it. Simple, but touching. I’ll warn you now though, it ends quite abruptly.

Spoilers?
Please don’t reveal anything that hasn’t been mentioned by the game. Part of the fun is figuring out what sent the Baron over the edge.

How long is the game?
There are 8 areas consisting of 5 stages each, for a total of 40. I’m not sure how the videos will be broken up, yet.

Do we seriously have to listen to your loving voice for that many stages
Don’t worry! I will be joined by Anoia who will be watching the game blind and offering her comments.

Anything else?
One more thing. The game’s soundtrack is quite good, and has some directional stuff going on—the melody may move from behind you to in front, and there is a speaking voice that will sometimes start in one ear but move to another before he’s done. It is recommended you play the game or watch these videos with headphones to get the full effect.

Finally, I am once again in debt to forums user Mastigophoran, who made the avisynth script I use for the videos. Thanks so much!

Ok, having said all that, let’s get started.

I feel like this game would look a lot better if they used a more stylized graphical look. The DS has always been better at those, realistic-ish graphics always look clunky.

Hold that thought, it raises an interesting question for later in the LP. For what it's worth, the game does look better on the 3DS, blowing it up for the video makes the jaggies stand out, unfortunately.

This is gonna get tragic as gently caress really really fast, isn't it?

Hey, we have a couple updates worth of warm memories before we need to worry about that :unsmith:

I have a sad suspicion that the baron tootled too hard and burned the factory down.

Or designed the most lethal teddy bear known to man

Couple that with "every child in town gets a free toy" day and...yikes...

Who knew that adding explosives to teddy bears was a bad idea?

Just got done watching these videos because I got done watching the Knights in the Nightmare LP (which was fantastically done btw!), and I continue to adore your pleasant commentary style. Looking forward to seeing what comes next in this charming game!
Ah dang, thanks so much! This made my day :D

The sliding audio on this game is so bizarre. I like the soundtrack a lot, I'm a big fan of this kind of music.
It only gets better imo. I think stages 5 and 8 are tied for my favorites.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the toy factory gets destroyed in the war.

A logical guess, but how do the drunk mosquitoes fit in?

It's a shame I didn't know of this game earlier.

Why do you say that?

Hmm, well if that's the case, I recommend anyone in that position to stop watching the LP and grab the game for themselves. It's a unique, fun little romp...you can always watch the LP after if you're still interested :)

Caught up with this. It's a charming game, but I also agree that the platforming plays tricks on you. It's the combination of the translucent platforms and camera angles that does it.

Yeah it's a real difficult thing some times. You respawn pretty quick, so a lot of the times it's *hop* *die* *hop* *die* *hop* *die* etc, and before you know it, you've burned through half your lives.

Vexrm posted:

Yes sorry for the very long delay, but I would have loved this game. I found I still have a DS, so will be buying it. It's very much in my wheel house.

I hope you like it! :)
