This is some beautiful tennis. I really like both guys but have to pull for Delpo here.
Can't wait for Wawa to win the whole thing and pass Murray in the race to a career slam. :getin:

Still though Wawrinka is one of the few players who can regularly beat Djokovic so I'll be hoping like hell that Wawrinka wins it all and Delpo keeps up this kind of form through next year.

Did the USO always put both women's semi-finals in the night session? Cause I remember watching both of them last year, but if I do that this time around I'd have to stay up til 2am just for the first match to begin. I certainly don't recall pulling an all-nighter for it last time... kind of a bummer.

Just scrap these pre-match interviews forever ffs. No one ever actually answers the questions, they just give the shortest semi-relevant statement and gently caress off ASAP. Understandably.

"What do you have to do to win the match?"
"I'm very happy to be in the semi-final. :)"

Or just scrap on-court interviews in general actually. Tennis pet peeve. :argh:

They are even worse and more pointless in the earlier rounds.

Pliskova's serve is looking good.

Lisicki's serve is quite a bit bigger, but yeah, Pliskova's is way more consistent. Or at least it has been her last 2 matches.

I've always been a fan of Pliskova. Hoping she can keep up this consistency.

The best are the inevitable post-match question "Next up you play So-and-so. How will you approach that match?"
"Well it'll be a tough match, So-and-so is a great player and I'll just try my best to win."

Like seriously every single player gives an identical answer to that question. Tough match, great player. Doesn't matter if they're playing Federer or somebody ranked 1000th in the world. Tough match, great player.

Anyway happy for Pliskova, bye Serena, only thing I'm mildly upset about is that she didn't beat Graf's record which means ESPN commentators will continue that as their only discussion point for at least one more grand slam.

Nice. I don't think I've made a bet on Pliskova since she lost to Jankovic last year after being up 5-2 in the third set. Lost 5 games in a row and even though I was on betfair I didn't trade out my bet, like a sucker.

She kept her head cool today though :)

3 Grand Slam Finals in 2016.

New WTA #1.

Well done, Mrs. Kerber. :toot:

edit:

The New Yorker on Kei Nishikori and playing under pressure:

quote:

Clearly, he knows how to play in big matches. In fact, by the A.T.P.’s own measure, Nishikori is one of the best pressure-situation players in history. According to the tour’s “career under-pressure ratings”—a statistic that combines the percentages of break points converted, break points saved, tiebreaks won, and deciding sets won (the third set for best-of-three matches and the fifth set for best-of-five)—Nishikori ranks fourth all-time, behind Djokovic, Pete Sampras, and Nadal. And yet Nishikori has a reputation for being someone who handles pressure badly. For a long time, he was known not for his deciding-set record but for having to play deciding sets in matches that he should have won easily. Usually so smart, he’d hit a loose shot. After making his first major final, he seemed to slide back, struggling with injuries and increased expectations.
