I think video games are as good a use of free time as a lot of other things adults do OP. Tons of adults spend a lot of time watching trash TV and movies or reading children's books. Why are video games any worse than that stuff?

Books are great for kids who need to learn things like math, history, elves, and dragons. Obviously some books are better for kid's development than others. However, I can't imagine, aside from illness or disability, where and adult spending a significant portion of their day reading books would be at all appropriate or healthy.
