ya but i was also under the impression that early christians appropriated their names to decry their gods as false and they just kind of stuck as names for the devil

I've never heard that theory. Sounds interesting, I'll look into it.

Another example, the demon goat devil thing is just a demonization of Pan:

Also Lucifer means light bringer and there's a ton of similarities between the story of his fall from heaven and the story of Prometheus.

Actually Lucifer is just a direct translation from the Hebrew name "Hillel Ben-Shachar" (shachar means dawn), mentioned in Isaiah 14:12, which probably refers to the king of Babylon and his eventual fall from grace. The verse was adapted to fit with Christian theology.

Probably depends on who is translating I suppose?

quote:

Lucifer (/ˈluːsɪfər/;[1][2][3] loo-sif-ər) is the King James Version rendering of the Hebrew word הֵילֵל in Isaiah 14:12. This word, transliterated hêlêl[4] or heylel,[5] occurs once in the Hebrew Bible[4] and according to the KJV-based Strong's Concordance means "shining one, light-bearer".[5] The Septuagint renders הֵילֵל in Greek as ἑωσφόρος[6][7][8][9][10] (heōsphoros),[11][12][13] a name, literally "bringer of dawn", for the morning star.[14] The word Lucifer is taken from the Latin Vulgate,[15] which translates הֵילֵל as lucifer,[16][17] meaning "the morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing".[18]

The OG Hebrew script prolly does come from the king of Babylon originally, but at the same time the Christian version of Satan has a a lot of similarities to the Prometheus story.

Fire - Apple
Brings knowledge to man - Brings knowledge of sin to man
Fall from Olympus - Fall from Heaven
Both defy their god
Chained to a rock for birds to eat organs for eternity - Eternal damnation

It's almost the same exact story actually.

e: although I *think* it is all based on Babylonian poo poo in the first place anyway which is prolly why they are similar to begin with
