Pedantically, bit rot and data rot are 2 separate things.

That said, SSDs can discharge cells naturally only after a week if you store them at a high enough ambient temperature. For most of us, its closer to a year or possibly 2 years for those living in cooler climates.

Are there any other 2tb M.2 nvme adds besides the 960 pro worth looking at?

This is sort of out of nowhere but has anybody done an analysis of system RAM bandwidth vs storage bandwidth over time? Just wondering how the ratios have fluctuated.

I've seen tons of $/MB trends for RAM and $/GB trends for storage but what about $/MB/s?

Great. All they had to do was make a 2TB 960 evo, and price it at $800-$850. Lots of rich people out there don't need a faster SSD, just more capacity at the same drat speed and the convenience of a single drive.

So here we are on the cusp of 2018 and I still don't see any 2TB M.2 NVMe drives that aren't the 960 Pro (which was released in 2016). Also something that isn't north of $1200 bucks would be good too but literally nothing exists.

So, I have a couple of recently retired 256GB 840 Pro drives with fairly low usage. How dumb would it be to run them on RAID0 so I could get a 512GB boot drive that's faster? Am I right in assuming that the big downside here is reduced reliability in the event a drive fails? I would plan on doing nightly backups to a spinning drive.

If there ever was an ssd to do RAID0 I''d say the 840 or 850 pro would be the ones to go with. The endurance and reliability on those things is amazing.

I had the OEM version of a 840 brick trying to run their own loving software (magician).

Not bootable, not recognizable in BIOS.

First storage of any kind I've ever had fail like that. Never had a HDD do that.

I find that funny because m.2 SATA is literally the only thing in the world that is giving us laptops with much faster than spinning disk storage at a reasonable cost and bigger, better batteries at the same time.

Is there a chart somewhere that shows us NAND type, DRAM y/n for drives?

I guess the NAND part is usually in the specs on retail sites but the DRAM thing isn't as easy to find.

I ran a Raid0 off some enterprise HDDs many years when cost per gig on SSDs meant boot drive only without exceptions FOR EVERYBODY.

The array never actually broke but windows updates would cause false positive RST errors and it just wasn't worth the trouble anymore.

High end systems in the beginning of 2002 only had about 60-80 GB hard drives. Compared to say, a 256 GB SSD things haven't actually changed proportionally.

yup there's a reason the QVO never gets any recommendations around here. The 660p 2TB does, but that's because a) at 2TB the SLC cache is pretty huge and b) they actually discount it somewhat proportional to the QLC:TLC ratio. QVOs are stupidly overpriced and never worth it.

Between a 2TB sabrent and a 2TB 660p I am happy to report that all SATA cables have been permanently evicted from my case. It is a strange sight seeing no hard drive cages and nothing in the 2.5'' caddies. TBF the SATA cables themselves weren't so bad - it was the drat power power connectors and trying to angle them into place.
