Boston was oddly the first city where I experienced some deep dish racism and classism. Do you know how bad you have to be to beat New York? gently caress I bet half of those lobster-eaters would consider that a point of loving pride.

Nice architecture though and the average person in the city center was way more educated and chill than any other city I've been to. It's also the only city I've been to in the US that feels like it has history living in it from top to bottom. New Orleans and Philly segregate what's left of their history to one tourist corner, and New York is always literally building on top of itself that while there's historical poo poo it's always a mish-mash of eras. Boston had a nice consistency to it. The North End in particular has a great English feel.

for real the northeast has transcended racism

when you've been so racist for so long that you're a pro and everyone else is and it's out in the open, no one cares anymore

I lived in Boston for 4 years while attending college and I had lots of horrible anxiety and panic problems during that time. It was dark, and I don't like to remember it.

(I wanna commission a huge billboard on the mass. turnpike with this quote and a photo of me looking out a window at a rainstorm.)

Joining the thread late to say that Y-Hat and indeed all New Yorkers can just gently caress right off, ok that's all I had :tipshat:

also the Boston craft brew scene is the tits. It has spoiled me. I went to Vermont last weekend and was all psyched to try theirs because I'd heard really good things but it turns out that if you don't like IPAs Vermont in the summer has basically nothing for you. Except cider. Cider was good.

JP was a ghetto type place, then it was colonized by lesbians, and now it is a fancy place. This happens in a lot of cities (Seattle comes to mind) -- gay people have good taste in restaurants etc and that brings in the rich people.

I am talking about the ones that are right on the pike, not the ones on exits. I am out in Framingham, and had to commute to Southie a few times a week, and I would have to go through 2 of those tolls and they would get backed up for miles each

Allston is gentrified-lite, as in it has tons of hipsters but they're all college students etc

It has really nice bars and restaurants though, so it's only a matter of time until rent prices catch up. The "luxury apartments" are already rolling in.

Um excuse me sir but you see, racism is very popular and people love to be very racist all the time so that other people identify them as racists and ruin their lives and reputations. Racism is the "norm", so to speak, but people who are brave and virtuous enough are speaking out against it these days.

I do remember some pretty nice restaurants come to think of it. It was great having lots of money and not having to work cause I was in college... man those were the days.

Go to Jack's Abby in Framingham and get some Framinghammer. It's a Baltic porter and it is my favorite Boston beer.

also maybe look up bars on the Internet before you go to them, this is a Travel Tip I learned the hard way when I went to London, wandered into whatever pub was nearby and seemed to have decent atmosphere, and was shocked to find out that each and every one of them only had ESBs on tap

Regal Beagle's chef went on Top Chef during the Boston season and was thoroughly unremarkable on it

Which makes sense because you eat there and are like "yeah this food is pretty good but I don't feel the urge to award the person who cooked it a million dollars or whatever"
