I have to wonder what the takeaway from this is. Did the American public, including and perhaps especially Republicans, really not give all that much of a poo poo about the Cold War when it comes down to it?

They gave a poo poo about communism and socialism. The soviet union fell in 1991 and Putin is president rather than General Secretary of the Communist Party. He's also corrupt as gently caress and likes to wave his dick around. These are things that have traditionally been popular with the American right wing dating back like a century.

It's a shame Eisenhower decided to throw in with the Republicans. Eisenhower was the last somewhat decent Republican president, and shitheels like Rich Lowry over at National Review basically have a job as "the adult Republicans in the room" because of caché created for them by Eisenhower.

Broadcast resolution was about that, depending, yeah. It was the rough equivalent of 640x480, but not formatted neatly like a computer monitor or modern televisions are, and the signal could get further degraded depending on what connector you were using (and given that most televisions were RF until the 80s, whoof) as well as what equipment you were using to capture the screens and video with (and consumer VHS was rather low-quality).

640x480 is very generous. It's closer to 480x360 once you take into account interlacing. It actually doesn't look half bad in motion, but framegrabs will always look like poo poo due to the need to average 2 "frames" worth of fields. On a decent CRT from a Betamax or SVHS source that video probably looks pretty alright, but we don't use those anymore.

So yeah, the reason old non-HD video looks like poo poo is because interlaced video (except for 1080i) doesn't really exist anymore, and so all the old news footage and stuff has had to be deinterlaced in the process of putting it up on YouTube. Deinterlacing is a finicky art and results can look great or like total rear end depending on the type of content and the algorithm used.

It didn't really look that lovely at the time, and people don't know dick about video so they're not really taking the care to do the capturing properly when putting poo poo up on YouTube.

The media feel it would be "biased," if they admitted it, though. So they're slanting their coverage so far toward Trump in a way to make him seem like a reasonable candidate that they end up falling off the cliff.

"Nobody expects you to have really done a deep dive on some of these complicated policy issues..." is such a patently absurd statement. We've gone from "What newspapers do you read?" to, "Oh we're not going to expect you to have read anything..." in the span of 8 years.

It's not just his supporters, though, which is the key thing to point out to anyone you hear bringing this up in real life. Donald Trump Jr. did an interview with a white supremacist radio broadcaster that was invited to a Trump campaign event to sit in radio row with all the other media outlets.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-extremists-idUSMTZSAPEC33G5QT8C

So not only were white supremacists openly invited to an event, but it's not like they flew under the radar. Someone involved at the highest levels of the campaign went and gave them an interview, and then also retweets a bunch of other neo-nazi poo poo too. Some of which Trump himself re-tweets.

Oh also, Steve Bannon, the dude that runs Breitbart is also running Trump's campaign and Trump is meeting on a WEEKLY basis with Roger Ailes, the recently-fired-for-decades-of-sexual-abuse-of-employees former head of Fox News Channel. Trump himself was also accused of rape by someone under oath in court.

http://fusion.net/story/328522/donald-trump-accused-rape-sexual-assault/

You could also write a book on his relationship with Roger Stone whose Twitter is full of crazy reprehensible racist/neo-nazi/misogynist poo poo. Then there's also his relationship to Alex Jones which leads smack dab into anti-semitism.

Remember, Obama having a fundraiser at Bill Ayers' house meant he palled around with terrorists. By 2008 standards then what does that make Trump?

So you don't have to play the "well some of his supporters game.." Trump himself and his campaign embody everything Clinton listed in her Basket of Deplorables.

It also allows her to sidestep some of Trump's rampant sexism. If Hillary tries to claim anything is sexist then people are just going to accuse her of whining. Nobody's going to accuse her of whining by talking about how racist and anti-semitic Trump, Trump's campaign, and its supporters are.

Then they can't muster any defense to any criticism because they operate in the, "c'mon they're family," realm rather than the realm of actual political campaigning.

I think the echo chamber nature of the internet, along with built-in misogyny of a lot of typical nerd fare are partially responsible for where we are today. And as a massive internet user and video game nerd myself, I don't get how I escaped it really.

The alt right is filled with young white men who think they're actually persecuted. The thing is, though, that demographic is a dead end. Thanks to interracial marriage and a number of other factors, the number of "white," babies being born is very small and has been shrinking over time.

So yeah, the alt right is young, but they're a tiny minority of the actual population, and fewer and fewer people like them are born every year.

The reason they have such a voice, though, is because they're the only youth demographic that will consistently pull the lever for the GOP. So the GOP likes to show them off at CPAC along with college Republicans in order to pretend like they don't have huge problems with younger voters.

They're essentially willing tokens for the Republican party because it gives their viewpoints legitimacy. If the GOP had some other kind of more reasonable population of younger voters then the alt right wouldn't get nearly so much attention. They'd be treated more like the youth far left.

Trump probably doesn't have the concentration to pull off a proper Gish Gallop. Gish Galloping on the internet is easy, but Gish Galloping live is very difficult. It requires paying attention to the flow of the debate and be purposely slippery.

Trump can't do that. He's very susceptible to being baited. Look at what happened with the Putin thing during the Commander in Chief forum, and that was with Matt Lauer who went pretty soft on him. Trump also hasn't had a press conference since July so he's not had to properly reckon with questions about.. "So you're a loving liar about your support for the Iraq war.." and "So you're a loving liar about this birther poo poo.." also.. "Umm.. your own foundation hasn't had any of your own money in it since 2007 and you used it for personal expenses and in one instance to bribe an attorney general..."

Trump has an "I'm gonna defend myself!" attitude, but he's actually real lovely at coming to his own defense since he usually just lies. So if Hillary can bait him(she can), then she can lead him around like an idiot into rhetorical landmines like saying nice things about Vladimir Putin, Joe Paterno, or Roger Ailes.
