I don't get how the atheist discussion is relevant to American politics since we're at least another decade away from having an open atheist in high office. We'll have a gay Muslim president before we have an atheist one.

I suspect we're going to have more than a few years of truck drivers doing what airline pilots do now: not much on the open highway, but a whole hell of a lot in cities, parking lots, and inclement weather.

What's weird is people acting like self-driving cars are an all/nothing dichotomy. There's a lot of "driver assistance" technology in between, you guys.
The issue is that laws right now are indeed "all or nothing", right? Either you're completely in control and have responsibility over the vehicle or you don't. How is that going to be squared with auto drive features creeping in?

It's already squared away, and it basically works like airline pilots. You can turn on the driver assistance programs, you can even rely on them, but you have to be paying enough attention to the road to correct your course and speed if they fail. This means you can offer more attention to the sound system or the other people in the car, but sadly the days of reading a good book while behind the wheel is a decade or more ahead of us.

Also, IANAL but I'm pretty sure civil law courts can assign percentages of blame when there's more than one defendant.
If they're gonna handle responsibility the way it's handled for airline pilots then it's gotta be made a lot harder to get a driver's license. Not that I wouldn't be all for that, mind you.

Oh yeah, we're talking about truck driving and not personal driving. For a personal driver, I still think the responsibility to monitor auto driving systems as well as driving by themselves is too much to ask for the current level of training they get.

For commercial drivers that level of training should be no problem. It's their job, after all.

“Well, I just don’t think she has a presidential look. And you need a presidential look. You have to get the job done,” Trump told ABC’s David Muir in an interview that aired Tuesday. “I think if she went to Mexico she would have had a total failure. We had a big success.”

Trump has said regularly on the campaign trail that Clinton does not look presidential, which his critics have blasted as a sexist attack on the first female presidential nominee for a major political party.

When Muir pressed Trump on whether his comments were about her physical “aesthetic,” Trump shrugged — suggesting his disapproval with the question — before knocking Clinton for her attacks on him.

“I’m talking about — hey, by the way, she says things about me that are horrible. As an example, the single greatest asset I have, according to those that know me, is my temperament,” he told Muir. “But she came up with this Madison Avenue line, ‘Oh, let’s talk about his temperament.’ It’s the single greatest asset I have is my temperament.”

I guess I'm not completely dead inside yet because it still really bothers me how much of Trump's campaign was based on completely baseless claims, and how relatively forgiving society in general has been about it. I don't mean claims that can be disputed with other sources, or claims about the future that no one can really know, I mean claims about completely real and documented things that were completely unresearched and pulled out of an rear end right then and there.

I thought baseless claims were fine when you're at the bar with your friends but not in any kind of professional setting, but it seems that was not a mainstream belief after all, if about half of Americans are ok with baseless claims.

I guess I kind of had that idea for a long time but especially due to the birther thing coming back it's become clear to me in a new way. Whether Trump wins or not, I now know that facts are just not as important to our society as I thought.

Anyway like I said, in Japan they are apparently learning about the old ideas of race as an actual part of anthropology, not just in a historical sense. Like, that when humans left Africa they left as three or four distinct tribes of different skin colors then later split into all the ethnic groups that we know. I think that area of education might end up being a problem for the multicultural Japan that will have to come someday.

It was right before Hillary looked into the camera and promised that we would, in fact, abide by our treaty commitments and international law.
