Clarste posted:The goal of translation is to convey the same idea as if it was originally written by an English speaker. This is my theory. Ah, but a native speaker or a non-native speaker? I've had someone argue that the native sentences straight from an ESL translator (whose sentences were not organized in a way that any native speaker would speak) should only be proofread for spelling and minor grammar mistakes. So, instead of rewriting that sentence to something that actually makes sense in english, you should leave it as close to the japanese kanji and katakana as possible*, so as to preserve the author's original text as much as possible. E: to bring it back to your point, the sentences would then sound like they were spoken by and english speaker ... just not a native one. DrSunshine posted:But... but that entails localizing it! Preserving an author's text means not mangling it by making it sound wooden and stilted since the author writing it in his natural language is not obviously trying to write in a stilted and wooden way! This is also a person who probably would rather people get acquainted with manga in english, then just learn japanese. I don't wanna put words in his mouth, but I can probably say he'd agree with that, with the caveat that he knows people don't have time for that.

HouseofGlass posted:Before I did any manga translation, I was on the side of "keep it as close to the original as possible." But I gave up on that the instant I actually had to sit down and write something that was readable. You basically have to take some liberties or it's just a clunky stilted mess. It's depressing to read that stilted translations aren't always just a weakness on the translator's part but are actually a deliberate decision by crazy people. It reminds me of those awful Chrono Trigger/FF6 retranslations. Fought. Grad school doesn't allow for much free time

z0glin Warchief posted:To continue my unfortunate trend of sounding like a smug know-it-all lately: having just gone and read some of the English translations, Jun comes off as way less of an rear end in the Japanese. As an example, what was translated as "It'd be a problem if someone thinks we're going out" was more of a "I know you wouldn't want anyone to think you have a lovely boyfriend like me" (not exactly that, it's a little more ambiguous in the Japanese, but that's the nuance). It was supposed to be a "he has self-confidence issues and Tomo misunderstood what he was trying to say by homing in on that one word" kind of deal. Ty for another good rundown, zoglin! New Silver Nina! Looks more and more likely that he's going to stay in the countryside, just from the things he's been doing and saying these past few chapters. And with how pro-countryside this manga is.

Dice Club is next on my list of things to read, but for now I've been reading Coffee Mou Ippai. Looks like it's been around for a while, but I'm really liking it. It's a bunch of standalone chapters that have at least something to do with coffee. The art style isn't manga-like, but I really like that about it. It's made me tear up, laugh, and say It's pretty good. And it makes me want coffee. E: I'm a tired dummy, some of the chapters are linked, actually. I can't remember if we talked about this one, but new Sui Youbi~ (If you don't read Sui, it's very cute and if you like generally cute things you should try it. It kinda shelves the looming "wait, what? She's what now?" for like the whole series and just focuses on the cute.) Also new chapter of the kitty manga Cats.

Hey, new Zawa! In which some dudes are pretty freaking rude. I feel like this manga is best read in a 'multiple chapters at once' manner, not 'each chapter as it comes out'. It just feels ... way too slow. Though that may be because the chapters don't come out too often in English. But it's just one dude doing all the work, so more power to you, nojay. Keep up the hard work, wherever you are.
