White Phosphorus posted:Back in the Dubbya days everyone always talked how conservatives were incapable of humor. However what is now evident is that they were incapable of humor because they were pro-establishment. Now the democrats are pro-establishment and have become incapable of humor. actual republicans are by and large even less funny than the daily show expats and assorted boring "punch up" hacks of the dems. milo yanapullthis is the comedy superstar of the right and he's only funny because of the reactions to his shtick. but the with us or against us attitude of the modern left means funny people get driven out. the guys making trump memes probably don't even have a strong political attachment (or maybe one describable only as chaos reigns), but they get labeled as alt-right or iFascists or whatever they come up with next. All because a dumb frog meme got retweeted by trump. SA was making fun of stormfront in 2003, white supremacy on the internet is nothing new. And I really don't think /pol/ and stormfront have grown to millions of people and plan to put on jackboots for trump. First of all, where would the /pol/ guys even find jackboots in size 10 ultra-wide?

mdm posted:neoliberalism already has a definition, why do americans think words involving the word liberal don't already have a definition because we had the "neo-conservative" movement in the late 90s / early 00s which hosed up lots of things for us and the world at large, because they were idiots with a simple-minded worldview and infinite willingness to sell out the government process to their wealthy corporate masters (wall street, big energy, and the military industrial complex) now we have the equal thing but from the other side, that is loving up lots of things for us and the world at large because they are idiots with simple-minded worldviews and infinite willingness to sell out the government process to a slightly different set of wealthy corporate masters (wall street, hollywood, and the military industrial complex but this time with drones) Toadvine posted:Paul Krugman is gunning hard for an appointment I used to like reading his blog for all the modern economics stuff. mdm posted:way, way off on what that word means https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism#Current_usage lots of people are wrong, deal with it. usage is meaning. Earwicker posted:also the notion of democrats serving corporate interests and promoting conflict overseas isn't some brand new thing that just now emerged in the 21st century I am aware which administration thought Henry Kissinger was a brilliant master of international what I'm saying is that the reason the word gets used so much currently is that we just had a political movement with "neo" which had a big impact, therefore people are primed to use that word on the next one that steps up to bat.

I love how the rhetoric about Trump has to be escalated to "he will start nuclear WW3 with russia / china", because everything short of that has already been checked off the list by the the last two presidents. An unjustified war of occupation based on scanty pretext? Nope. A program of extrajudicial assassination that has killed thousands of civilians in blatant violation of the Geneva Convention? Oops! Trump's hypothetical war crimes get more weight than the current administration's actual ones.
