i wouldn't call it porn, plenty of visual novels have lovely porn rammed in but in saya no uta's case it is definitely an aspect of the horror. still its very lovely that the folks who recommended it to you did not mention it featured sexual horror, including many things very much needing hefty content warnings

Whether it was intended for the reader to tug one out to, or whether the writer was having a real fun time writing it, I don't know, but I would call it porn. And I wasn't traumatized by it or anything, it was just a bit of a surprise and I find it to be the worst part of the game because having those greasy scenes in there makes it pretty hard to recommend to a lot of people who might otherwise enjoy a good horror story.

Youtube randomly recommended me a raocow video in the year 2024. Apparently he's still posting three LP videos a day that get under a thousand views. Though he seems to make a decent bit of change from Patreon at least so there's that.

He's a good guy and has fun doing what he does, but I unsubbed from him a few months ago just because 3 vids a day is a lot of vids in the sub feed when you're not really watching any of them. I kinda stuck around for the SMW content because he used to be really good about being one of the few that would play our contests over on SMWC. His forum and youtube communities are pretty bad though, sadly. I think he sticks to his Patreon community instead of popping into his forum very often and honestly I can't blame him.

Having like 20 updates for the next LP already basically prepared was a mistake because now i have to fight the temptation to jump straight to the next one instead of giving myself at least a week off between them lol

Nowadays, I keep to a much more reasonable schedule of doing an update every, uh...three months or more. Yeah.

The evolution of my FF14 project from daily-ish 1-3 paragraph blog posts in the MMOHMO General thread to 5-7000 word long-form synopsis and critique once a week was a very interesting journey to live through. I'd not like I planned it either, it just kind of happened.

Personally, it's interesting as hell when an LPer goes "okay here's some unreasonable nonsense. Here's what I had available to counter it. And here's what I wound up doing." And pokemon romhacks and fangames are particularly rife with unreasonable nonsense. Before the endgame wore me down with actual bullshit I couldn't defeat, I was actually days away from pulling the trigger on a Pokemon Radical Red LP. This was back in this past September. I think it's entirely possible for a Pokemon LP to be interesting, but I think it needs to do a lot of work since... Pokemon itself isn't very mechanically interesting? And usually has kind of weak storylines? So either there's gotta be a good bit of writing to patch out the empty space with some narrative and personality, some sort of puts-your-balls-in-a-vise romhack that forces use of niche and edge case mechanics to have a chance to progress or some sort of patently insane/bizarre/incompetent romhack in terms of presentation.

EV, IV, STAB and capture, same poo poo, different coat of paint, and storylines are still the same scholastic book fair rehash because why mess with what works? even a lot of the usual romhack stuff is a little chancy in my mind simply because no gen of the game is balanced that well, so at a certain point you generally have the local equivalent of the Alakazam spamming Psychic that we all had in gen 1. it'd almost have to be some full on MMO boss style poo poo where challenges are on a script and if you don't solve the problem the way they intend, die, go gently caress yourself, come back when you've got another idea. seeing how people might push the engine to its absolute limit could be interesting in that way. the narrative romhacks i would be INCREDIBLY suspicious of. pokemon as a world and concept has a lot of Oz style don't look behind the curtain stuff going on, and unfortunately the people who question what's behind the curtain have as much sense of nuance and subtlety as the people who created the world in the first place. that's how we get the dark-and-gritty romhacks where someone commits suicide and your rival shows up to immediately laugh at the newly deceased. i'm sure it's not IMPOSSIBLE to tell a satisfying story of melancholy, catharsis, growth or healing with the pokemon world, but i also don't think many competent writers would tackle that challenge rather than taking that talent to a truly original work.

Everyone is overthinking this. If someone thinks it'd be fun to LP Pokemon, just do it. Who cares if it's original or groundbreaking or whatever, it's a loving Let's Play, all that matters is the LPer enjoys it.

Like all bad or mid RPGs I never want to touch or cannot force myself to touch for long, I just want someone to lp Pokemon in as much detail as possible so I can expand my encyclopedic knowledge of RPGs. Crosspiece was doing super well but I guess he hit his extreme burnout era.
