I'm doing a World of Final Fantasy Nuzlocke run and would like some feedback if that's ok. These videos don't get many views but I don't promote them either (not sure where to since they're not really a hot topic and I think they take some investment to get into?)

Any suggestions are appreciated!

a good long while ago, i posted that i was working on a kerbal space program let's play. due to various reasons, i stopped working on it, and since then the game has had some significant upgrades to the point where i feel that starting over is better. however, i'm not posting about that. rather, in recording a new first episode today, i was running my planned post-commentary through my head and started wondering if i should do a separate 5-10 minute 'episode 0' for an introduction to how the game works for people who have never really played it much/at all. i figured i could do this as a way to show what the different buildings in the space center do and what the basic concepts of the game are, without having to do all of that in a regular episode of the let's play since there will probably be a fair number of people who already know that stuff. that way when i start the 'real' series, i can focus more on the here and now of what is going on in the game. is this a good approach?

Disclaimer: this is in no way a stab at Baldurk or the work he does with the archive/lpix/testposter. It's a dig at the culture in this thread.

It's been bugging me for a while: this thread really bumrushes anybody who comes up with legitimate concern about the archives.

Yes, Baldurk does it for free, in his spare time, and even foots the bill for the site. And that is very great, no doubt about it.

But bringing that up every time anybody mentions the archive is counter-productive. It legitimately is an issue that the banners linking to archive.org are invisible and the thread pretending like it is a user fault, also the 50th time it happens, is not productive and actually kind-of lovely. Same every time somebody mentions the update schedule of the archive.

Maybe there are solutions or maybe the situation is fine as is, but I'm not sure that killing the discussion immediately every time is the best.

Many years ago, every test post in here was met with "what do you bring to the table," to a point where many LPs were killed before they started. This bad habit was killed off, and both the thread, feedback and subforum got better as a consequence. Maybe it is time to do the same for the knee-jerk reactions to every question about the archives?

I had some suggestions here, but this post is not about that: it's about the knee-jerk reaction that I think would be better gone.

The answer to the question "where's baldurk" is probably " he's busy" - there's little discussion to be held around that that won't inevitably turn a bit hostile against him for not updating as often as he used to.

the alternative to waiting for the return of the king is probably making an alternative archive given that he's consistently said he'd not interested in help with the existing archive. This is something I suspect that most of us don't have the wherewithal to get off the ground, let alone foot the server bills for. If you have an alternative suggestion it's be nice for you to share it because at the moment you're just posting about posting (and so am i now).

Sounds like something that goes in the game room. Reading a transcript of a campaign sounds like the height of tedium to me although some goons will read anything

E: the other advantage of the game room is that it's also the place to find group

I play a lot of d&d I just wouldn't really read it, the only d&d l.p. I ever watched was syrg's campaign, and that was a vlp

How would people be able to vote on monsters/dungeons/items while still giving the players in the game any authority or autonomy? Is the idea for you to be the dm and the group?

Namtab
Feb 22, 2010

:justpost: then. It seems you have an idea in your head, the proposed audience interactivity means that its an lp as opposed to PbP and does belong here, and it may work out fine in practice.

As others have said a system lighter on or more naturally narrative about combat may work better for this idea. 13th age has been floated by you, you could also try Fellowship or Dungeon World which are both fun systems and lend themselves better to you being able to translate combat (and rolls in general) to a story.

Good luck

It looks fine, if you wanted a single update you could use italics to explain the mechanics of what you're doing, otherwise following the narrative with the explanation works too.

The important thing is discretion on the part of the OP. Theres no issue for me with an op containing a little banner advertising the patreon or whatever, or a little bit along the lines of "if you like what im doing then you can support it here". But I'd be annoyed if the op contained a whole list of ways to donate (pick one!), paragraphs of information about the benefits of being a patreon etc. Building upon the "the lp should be for the thread", the op shouldn't be releasing bonus content for that lp for patreons only either. The free user should get the same experience on this forum.

E: i think theres some creators that release vids a week early for patrons and ive never seen it cause a conflict around here, people in LP dont seem to talk about things that aren't publicly available in the threads

Namtab
Feb 22, 2010

Some, but not all.

Frequency was my go to example, both the youtube links and the (lol) viddler links do not work.
From memory Defence grid is also no longer on youtube, with none of the links workong.
Dead to rights the links are all viddler and blip, although it still exists via slowbeefs youtube.
Covert action none of jade stars links work.

None of the above have archive.org links, and i guess my question to baldurk is whether hes actually interested in being made aware of things like that.

There's not much I can do about dead LPs. If the author wants them removed then I can remove them, but otherwise they might as well stay up there for at least partial preservation.

Possibly a banner, like there is for the ones on archive.org, to indicate that all/most of the links are dead. I don't think you'd need the author's permission for that, and its on them to contact you with backups or if they want it removing.
