DreamShipWrecked posted:Question about the Archives, are we basically adding in every single thread that is finished on SA, or is it a certain type? I am asking because my current Alice LP is far, far more conversational and casual than my previous ones (the current episode is half Miz Kriss and I talking about anime) and while I am having a lot of fun posting it I don't want to poo poo up the Archives if it's more designed for more game-focused commentary. The only ones I've ever heard of Baldurk refusing were anime porn games and/or Fate/stay night and Tsukihime, but he relented on the latter due as the primary objections to those were how much space/bandwidth they'd take up, and that was back when the archive was a tiny thing. You should be good!

Artix posted:Okay, so I have a strange idea for an LP and I need a little feedback on the idea. Basically, I want to show off The Beginner's Guide - if you've never played it, it's basically a guided tour of a collection of small indie games, narrated by Davey Wreden (of The Stanley Parable fame). The catch is that because it's a "guided tour", Davey basically never shuts up, so voice commentary is basically out. But the game also has subtitles for Davey, subtitles for the assorted dialogue options that start showing up about halfway through, and adding a third set of subtitles (from me) would be basically unwatchable. Would it be a massive faux pas to post what basically amounts to a longplay before getting to the actual meat of the LP? The game isn't long, maybe 90 minutes or so, so it would only be like 5 videos at most, and it's kind of required reading for when we start going into the literary criticism part of the LP, because it does a ton of interesting things with Death of the Author and the separation between the Author and the Narrator. Or am I just totally overthinking this? How are you going to present the LP part of the LP? Text? Video?

Artix posted:I was thinking that after getting through the "text" in and of itself, I would do videos where I mute Davey and do voice commentary over video the appropriate bits of the game. I was kicking it around with some folks on the SA discord, and we came up with a handful of theories worth going into, and obviously anything the thread comes up with might be worth taking a deeper look at. That sounds good to me! Divvy it up so that someone who's already been through the text (i.e. me) can skip it and check out your LP stuff for new insight on the game, and for those who don't have it they can catch up with the class. I like it.

I've been recording it over on the Paradox forums, but as I was getting towards the end of the CK2 volume, I wondering how it might be received over here? On the one hand, we've had a lot of Paradox LPs and they're great. More are always great! On the other hand, that's a bit of a youtube dump-esque situation, if we've got a mostly complete LP being posted all at once, and that's frowned upon.

The video is still processing, but I can at least offer this: in my opinion, having such a tiny banner be timg-ed is unnecessary. Let it be full-sized, don't make a potential viewer click on it to see its full-size.

Artix posted:That seems...unnecessary? Like, it would take 5 seconds to find out whether it's video, screenshots, or some weird hybrid thing just by clicking on the thread and thread title space isn't exactly overflowing. It's like what, 75 characters? A minimum of 5 of which would be eaten up by this. Agreeing with this. It's super pedantic to put a rule like that in place. e: Not to mention that most of the time if you know the game, you know how it's going to be LPed. Dark Souls gets VLPs, Ultima gets an SSLP, and so on. StrixNebulosa fucked around with this message at 06:22 on Nov 20, 2016 |

Real minor nitpick - I'd change "And with that, let's *slightly damp hug*!" to *slightly damp hug* and just drop the extra text, keeping with the theme.

Once I have enough content to warrant it, I plan on adding a table of contents to the OP. I tried to focus more on the actual start of the quest for this post- massive effort posts about mechanics would come up later when they became relevant. Looks good on my 1600x900 resolution monitor - they don't break tables. On the other hand, given the kind of font that game uses, readability might be an issue unless they're a little smaller.

Nehru the Damaja posted:Any advice/pointers on how best to handle an LP of "The Sea Will Claim Everything?" Part of me is saying just "don't do it" because its format seems to resist LPs pretty hard -- large walls of text that wouldn't play well on video, but tons of back and forth that would make the story and progression feel weird and disjoint. Maybe screenshots joined by narrative to keep it flowing? Something like that would have to take the game very slow, I think. It's like a 5-hour game that would take many posts to do it like this. But it's such a neat game and story. My immediate thought is to point you to the ongoing LP of Geneforge by POOL IS CLOSED as a good example of a screenshot LP - if your writing can match the style, absolutely do it like that. My more practical suggestion is to LP one of the prequel games like the Book of Living Magic as that's shorter and of similar quality, so you could get the hang of it there, maybe?

Trust me, you don't wanna end up like the sad sacks over at r/letsplay who keep chanting "Why am I not growing an audience!?" Like I said, you're better off in the long term to LP something you're familiar with and have strong feelings for, because the quality of your commentary will definitely improve when you know what you're going to say and how to say it. Also, from a casual viewer's perspective, I can look up a thousand day one LPs of some yahoo being overly shocked at a new game. What's gonna make your blind LP stand out from the rest? The Geop Dark Souls one worked because he had a I mean, bring something interesting/fun to the table if you're gonna do an LP. You'll do much better at it if you're invested, and after doing an LP like that, you'll be able to bring that new skill to a blind LP. Or something.

Conquest of Elysium 4 OP + First Update Second Update I'm aiming for a relaxed SSLP where I walk the audience through my thought process as I play this game, and hopefully get better at playing as I go along.

Otherwise I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of a great and underrepresented game! Absolutely - I've played enough of it to lose my Troll King to all kinds of BS things. My intent with this game is to walk the audience through one of my typical games, explaining my decisions and choices as I go along, and then when I die to BS, well, the audience will understand how and why I got there. I'm also not averse to using the saves in the game to get around the roguelike elements, although I won't stoop to cheating and revealing the whole map upon death. I've begun work on another update but halfway through the shelter called with news that they approved my application to adopt a dog, so, uh, good thing I haven't made a thread for it.
