Grapplejack posted:replace them with unclaimable midi versions of the tracks, obviously. I don't know if the end result would be the same for everyone and for every song, but it seems like getting copyright claims would, at worst, prevent those videos from being monetized by you. If that's OK, then just say "gently caress it." If that doesn't work for you, then do midi versions.

Didn't we used to be able to collect archives for ourselves, thus allowing us to modify the content that got submitted so we could include extra stuff from the threads? What happened to change that?

If they're not the copyright holders, just dispute it and say "These guys are liars." and see what happens.

FactsAreUseless posted:People who have done screenshot LPs: what are some good guidelines for what shots to take and use? How much dialogue should I be transcribing versus screenshotting? How many steps of doing something do people need to see to follow an action? I don't think my attempt at an SSLP was well received because I tried to do something different from the norm, but my opinion is that each image should convey something of value to the reader. Something that portrays the tone of the game or the commentary that would follow. Something that gives a strong sense of what the game is like to play, or provides valuable information on the mechanics, or maybe just looks really nice. When it comes to dialogue, I think the only important things to showcase are moments that you feel are important to the story or to characterization. Everything else should be summarized. SSLPs are a style meant to offer a leaner experience and convey only the information the LPer considers valuable to the reader, whilst adding their own commentary. Just keep that in mind in order to determine what you should and should not keep.

What's keeping you from summarizing instead of doing a text dump?

I've said it earlier in this thread, but I feel like SSLPs, by nature, provide a trimmed down experience for the viewer/reader. You're picking and choosing parts of the game to show and deciding on what's most important to share, and trying to convey the most information possible in an efficient manner. I would think that cutting out or summarizing dialogue would go along with that. Is my mindset wrong here? When you go into an SSLP, what kind of experience with the game are you expecting to have? People are saying things like insisting on fully transcribed dialogue or wanting to give a more complete experience, but what, to you, makes a SSLP a unique experience from a VLP?

Looking for some opinions. I recent did a playthrough of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, and to avoid any automatic flagging, I replaced the licensed music with MIDI versions of songs from the first four games. I'm contemplating doing a playthrough of THUG now, and licensed music is going to be an issue again. Here are the possible options; 1) Reuse the same MIDIs from the collection that I used for THPS4. 2) Use MIDIs of other songs that have no connection to the game (I did this when streaming the game). 3) Use video game music from various sources. 4) Leave the licensed music as is. 5) Have no music whatsoever. Here are my concerns with each option; 1) Might be repetitive, using the same music as before. 2) If I use the same songs I used in the streams, then it's the same issue of repetition. If I should use new songs, I'll have a lot of difficulty finding songs that weren't already part of my playlist. 3) I'm concerned that they'll feel very out of place. Kinda like this. Also concerned about getting a large enough selection of music that doesn't clash with one another. 4) Copyright claims, potential muting/blocking of videos. Really not my favorite option. 5) Might just sound too "empty" without some music to go along with the gameplay sounds and commentary. The above video has the music turned off, to give you an idea.

If you don't wanna re-record, you can add the subtitles yourself with your program of choice, or with YouTube's closed captioning.

Epicmissingno posted:Can I get some feedback on this enemy bio design? The test poster doesn't work well with tabs or just multiple spaces in a row in general, so I can't put it on there. I think you're better off making an image template for all the information, where you can edit the text depending on the monster. That way you can more efficiently deliver that information without it being a huge text dump.

Here's a quick and dirty example I did that took an hour or so, and then all I'd need to do is change some text and swap a new pic into the frame. The hard stuff is done. I've been doing "Part 0" episodes to go with my VLPs that replace a typical OP. Videos that are a couple minutes long with info about the game and the plans for the LP, possibly an intro cutscene. It keeps the OP devoid of clutter (nobody goes to a video LP to read) and give you all the info in a single link you can either watch or skip to get to the actual game part of the LP.

The Master List can be edited by anyone. Just added it there for ya. But I think only the person or persons responsible for making an LP can request it be archived. You'd also need to wake baldurk from his thousand-year slumber. Edit: Yeah what that guy said.

The only reason YouTube got to be where it is today is because Google bought it and built it up. YouTube was pretty lame poo poo when it was first around, to the point where we actively advised against hosting there. Maybe Amazon or something could look into a competitive service.

What kinda things do you guys like to do when preparing to record? Like, what's your routine? Do you just plop down and go to town, or do you have a little ritual you like to do? I've been trying to watch funny YouTube vids or listen to some music that puts me into a good mindset. I've also considered having tea or soup before starting, but it's so drat hot now, so I have just been having a popsicle or something like that.

I get a significant number of views from people checking out the Archive, so I feel bad when it's been a year since I finished an LP and it's still not available for people to know about. I know people have offered to contribute to the site in both time and money, and Baldurk refuses it, but I think maybe it's time he reconsidered. A lot of people care a lot about the Archive and want to do more than say "Hey when will this thing update again?"

Is the "One line, one link" thing universal? For my VLPs, I sometimes double up on Youtube links to reduce scrolling in the OP, and I connect the YouTube links to images. I think you've archived the last LP I've done in that format, and I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but I just want to be 100% sure moving forward.

If I were to ever make a case for porn game LPs at this point in time, it'd be because I like seeing weird and/or bad games shown off where people can laugh or over the content, and I feel like porn games have a lot of potential for that kind of content. Not that long ago, a game called House Party was released, and you can find lots of videos of it on YouTube of people just having a great time laughing at how bad the game is. Of course, the game is also pretty drat rapey and gross, and that's a good case against porn game LPs too. Even if you can find humor in the absurdity of the games, they're still filled with some really questionable or outright horrible stuff that you're now subjecting other people too, and maybe we don't want the reputation and association with that kinda stuff. Leave the rape humor to the pros, like Pewdiepie.

I've been working on putting together my LP for Tony Hawk's Underground 2. In previous games, I kept the game soundtracks turned off, and replaced them with alternatives to try and avoid copyright claims, either by using midi versions of songs, or by using video game music. But as I'm playing, recording, editing, etc, I just find that I don't really notice or mind the lack of music. I'm in a much more active role than a viewer though, so I was wondering how strongly others feel on this. What are your opinions on these three options; -Actual game soundtrack -Replaced game soundtrack (with music from NES games) -No soundtrack

For those of you that watch my videos, you know that I do introductory videos to my LPs. For those of you that don't watch my videos; Hi, I do introductory videos to my LPs. I'm currently working on a project that was originally supposed to be for last Halloween, but got pushed back to THIS Halloween because I decided I wanted to do a history report, which continued to grow and grow, which will translate into a bigger video than I feel I'm prepared to do. Needing to assemble appropriate music and visuals to accompany the information seems like a very daunting task that I'm not sure I'll be up for. I was wondering if anyone here could point me in a direction where I might be able to find someone (or some ones) that could help me assemble all of this into a video. I figured I should be looking into this sooner rather than later to figure out what my plan will be.

Looking at my projects, I'm feeling pretty good about my track record. I haven't had to abandon any projects since coming back, although some LPs take a lot longer to finish than I'd hoped. I was even able to redo an LP I had abandoned and will hopefully be able to do that for the others eventually. I think my biggest issue is my ambitions are far bigger than my capabilities. I wish I could collaborate with more people and get editors and writers like all the other cool gaming YouTubers have. And money. Money would probably help a lot too, so I could hire those people in the first place.
