A good, well-supported minor league system is how most problems in play quality is cured.

The NCAA might not be good, but it is very well supported.

Why? Does Matt Ryan suck? Or did I rate him too low for you? So far I've been called out on Ryan and Carson Palmer, neither of which invalidates my argument, btw, and their lifetime stats seem to generally bear out my rankings.

If we want to argue the difference between a "B" and an "A", I suppose we could but I'm not sure how it effects the overall point I made, which is that there's not really a "quarterback competency crisis" in the NFL at all.

Carson Palmer and Matt Ryan are both perfectly good, solid NFL QB's, neither of which I think are going to the Hall of Fame or anything

To be fair, QB opinions vary wildly year to year, and given your previous assertion of "taking their whole career into account" I can understand your rankings.

But given present-day ability, your list is broken as gently caress.

Right now, we have:

Great:
Aaron Rogers
Cam Newton
T*m Br*dy
Ben Roethlisberger

Really Good/Above Average
Phillips Rivers
Joe Flacco - I'll give this to you OBERST. But just this loving once.
Carson Palmer - He's earned it. The Cards offense hums when he's under center.
Drew Brees - He's still got some loving HoF Juice, but he's coming back down to earth in his old age.
Russel Wilson - He flashes great, but I think you'll find that he's actually just really good.

Adequate
Tony Romo - He's broken as gently caress and probably done.
Matt Ryan - He's broken and his weaknesses are masked by the offensive scheme. His deep ball is almost completely gone and he has a hard time hitting receivers in stride. The number of passes thrown behind receivers is maddening.
Matt Stafford - He's got a cannon arm and a lot of heart, but he's just not loving above average.
Eli Manning - His Superbowl rings are luck and lucky, and mostly propped up by his defense.
Andrew Luck - He took too many hits, expectations for him should be back down to earth.
Andy Dalton - He has too many bad games to be considered above average.
Ryan Fitzpatrick - He's dependable, but also not great. He'll get the job done. He's the definition of adequate.
Alex Smith - See Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Jay Cutler - He doesn't loving CAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE, but I mean, he's got talent.
Kirk Cousins - He's got upside, I guess, but If we had a below average cat, I'd put him there.
Ryan Tannehill - He flashes some ability, but I think ultimately, he's just not able to make W's happen on his own.
Sam Bradford - See fuckin' Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Blake Bortles *
Jameis Winston*
Derek Carr *
Marcus Mariotta*

***That ship has sailed, these guys are adequate QB's. Possible really good inc for Derek.

Too Early to say
Teddy Bridgewater - He's just been hurt too much.

Way Too early to say
Carson Wentz
Brock Osweller
Dak Prescott
Trevor Seiman
Paxton Lynch
Jared Goff
Jimmy Garapolo

Complete poo poo/Hopeless
Case Keenum
Mark Sanchez (is he in the league?)(Yes... yes he is)
Blaine Gabbert
RG3
Shaun Hill

It is your right, as an American, to be a homer. Even if it is to the Titans.

Lets get the Grizzlies moved to the East so TN can get some finals appearances this decade.

you don't know what you're talking about. Teddy missed one start since he got promoted to a full time starter, and was trending very well to a good QB until he tore his ACL this year, Now, of course, he's a huge question mark, but the argument of being hurt too much is factually wrong.

I like Teddy and am trying to cut him some slack by saying the jury is still out. Losing his 3rd season sucks rear end, but his stat sheet doesn't show much across his first 2 seasons.

NotWearingPants posted:

I think you need another category between adequate and complete poo poo. You could call it "bad" or "crap" and move names down from adequate like Fitzpatrick, Cousins, and Tannehill.

Also, I think you can move Wentz up into the "Really Good/Above Average" category. It's been 2 games!

Man, I hate the Packers as much as the next guy (Clay Mathews killed Harambe), but how can you like football and not watch their games? The best QB in football plays for them. At least watch to see him slowly get CTE until he actually convinces himself his relationship with Olivia Munn is genuine.

I'm just saying no matter how you slot the guys, like I did, that compared to stuff that was going a decade ago (or even two decades) the ratio of good to great to average to suck is about the same. I'd say overall, it's slightly better but I haven't dug that far.

I pulled that list more or less off the top of my head, only going back to check stats for Ryan and Palmer after a few guys called me out. I suppose you could slide Cutler and Tannehill down into "hopeless" by now, but, semantics aside, the ratio of great to decent to poor seem to me about the same as they've always been.

People are quibbling over my ratings instead of looking at my overall point, which is that I disagree with the OP. Mariotta, Wentz, Luck, Bridgewater, Winston, Bortles, Carr (and even Prescott) could all become future stars. There's no crisis at the position.

Make hot takes, get hot replies. :colbert:
