a guy i work with went home a few weeks ago and heard a cat in his stairwell that i guess had wandered up to his floor? or someone had left it there? i dunno, he lives on the 50th story, no idea how it got there. he loves cats, he has two, and while it was meow-ing in the hallway a guy from his floor came out, picked up the cat, and threw it out the window of their hallway.

can't imagine the cat made it after falling 50 stories, the guy was crushed at work the next day.

really tho the main problem is that a lot of people on bikes dont' think that the stoplights apply to them. my best friend in tianjin is a tianjin born canadian dude, he has lived in montreal for 11 years off and on, and he has an ebike and when we are going to places he NEVER follows the lights, he told me specifically no one thinks they are for bikes. on my way to work every day the cars do a decent job of stopping at lights, but they usually fill up intersections first and then clog the intersection and the light changes so they can't run the light, but bikes never stop. ever. they just constantly are going both ways which really fucks up the flow of traffic. most of the people getting slammed in that video are on bikes. eeeesh.

other main problems that i see all the time that may contribute to this: at night time i'd guess one out of every seven cars i see doesn't have their lights on. also cars seem to go SUPER slow when they are turning. like when i am taking a left turn in USA, i wait until i have a break in traffic and accelerate into it, so im going with the flow of traffic. look at the car at 10:05. for some reason it is turning left and slows down, ultimately coming to a complete stop, as it gets blasted by a truck. like if he had just gunned it he may have made it across, if the truck slowed down? or he could have just waited? but somehow choosing to to hit the breaks and come to a complete stop in the direct line of path of the truck was deemed the best choice. idgi

last you have the kind of accident that TRULY boggles the mind, at 14:17, where the intersection is comically large, you immediately see the intersection and think "no possible way that there is an accident here" and you see one small little bike and one car and you think "this is such an inanely large intersection i can't actually believe these two vehicles will collide" and then you watch and despite their best effort to avoid each other, the vehicles ultimately end up crashing

a girl from outside changsha that i was...plunging kinda casually dating? in 2011 lived in one of those subdivided apartments in tianjin. it was the same building that my friend lived in with one roommate, except the girl from changsha lived in an apartment with 9 other girls, they were all dancers and all living together, sharing this apartment. it cost about 2,500 rmb/month, which is like 375 bucks a month at the time, so if you split that ten ways they were all paying like 38 bucks a month for rent to live in this dingy subdivided place. she and another girl shared a room that barely fit the two beds, you had to crawl on her roommates bed to get to her bed. she used to always come to over to my place but one night we crashed at hers and woke up in the middle of the night and i was totally out of it and her roommate was like half in our bed half in her bed. it was weird as all hell and i was like "really what am i doing with my life"

so my office is moving buildings. this is an amazing process.

it started last spring, when we were told we would be moving offices. we were told maybe august, maybe september, maybe november. no one seemed to know, other than the fact that we were moving. as the time got closer, we were told "we aren't sure, just wait, we will move soon".

last week, we were told we are moving this week. maybe wednesday, maybe thursday. no one was sure. finally we were told last friday. we will move on wednesday! everyone was happy and excited.

monday came and went. on monday i talked to the HR girl, i asked her if i could look at the new office, to make sure there wasn't any horrific chinglish mistakes like the last two offices we have, that have stuff like "to change the history a person to be then" plastered on the wall. she lived in australia for three years and said "don't worry, i've seen the new office, there's nothing like that, it's ok" and i was like "alright then". tuesday came and went. on tuesday we were told "please pack up your things and be ready at 1pm wednesday, the moving company will come then".

tuesday afternoon was filled with the staff, foreign and chinese, packing up everything we owned. we get to the office on wednesday, its moving day! woo! our electricity is shut off and we get there and everyone is just hanging out. we are moving across the street, to a new building connected to the four seasons. super nice building from the looks of it. we will move at 1pm.

around 12:30, we are told "maybe wait until 1:30 to 2", we said ok. around 1:30pm three chinese guys show up. they are the moving company. we have like 30 people in company and all of us have tons of books and stuff. they look around, smoke a cig, and leave. around 2pm we are waiting for the moving company, i go to the bathroom, i come back and all the foreigners are gone. i figured they went to go get a coffee or something, but they actually went across the street to our new building to move their stuff, even though they weren't supposed to. i get a message at 2:30pm from this guy rich who says "are you sure we are moving to this building? because no one knows who we are, no one seems ready for us and this place looks like a war zone", so i ask our HR girl about it and she says "it isn't ready! you are supposed to wait! we will go at 4pm today with our company boss!" so i tell rich "yo you aren't supposed to go there yet, hang tight, come back". no one comes back, i later learn they all went to a bar to drink. i joined them later, but at this point i was waiting at the office. around 3pm our HR girl says "the moving company has ran away, they will not move us today, you can have tomorrow off, everyone can have tomorrow off", I say "what, the moving company ran away?" and she says "yeah, they said it was too much work". so the moving company that we have contracted to move us, to like, do their job, that their company does, thinks we are too much work. so they won't do it. uh, ok.

around 3:10pm i get this picture from this guy andy, who had gone over to the new office.

this is two hours AFTER we were supposed to move into this building. like...this is the new office people chose to move to on wednesday the 28th at 1pm. and everyone kept looking at it and kept being like "yup, we will move on wednesday at 1pm", even up until like wednesday at noon, people were like "we will be ready to go at wednesday at 1pm", and then after 1pm came, it was "wait an hour, we will be ready at 2pm" but like, who in the world thought this would be ready in an hour?

so they told us to take today off, but come in on friday. and the entire foreign staff said "yeah we will take friday off too, no way that building is ready" and this one chinese girl was like "why would you take it off, we have to work on friday" and one guy said "LOOK AT THIS, do you think it will be ready?" and she said "why not, they said we will work on friday, so we should go there to work"

i'm expecting a message in our work chat group around 4:45pm today that says "no work tomorrow, have a rest". in fact, i expect a bunch of these messages for the next week or two, because this does not look remotely ready to move into. and we can't go back to our old office because everything is packed up and finished.

how hard is moving? shouldn't it be like "here is a new office. its ready. great. pack up your stuff. a moving company moves it to the new office. start work again"

this is like "we want a new office. we will move on this day. pack up your stuff. lets go. poo poo it looks like its half done. wait an hour. wait another hour. poo poo take tomorrow off. in fact take a week off. we may or may not move next week. just hang tight for a minute"

yesterday ended with our staff getting really drunk together and laughing and enjoying our lives because what the hell are we supposed to do

it's time for TGA's "Hey, We're Moving Offices in China! lol!"

part one, in case you missed it

well, i set the over/under on days off that we will get as a staff at 15.5. a few people have bet the over, so the line has moved to about 17.5. we are on our second day off.

today my wife was near our old office, it's just like two blocks away, and said she saw three girls with boxes and bags outside our office, waiting around. one boxed had broken and fallen open and stuff was everywhere, it looked like a bunch of books, so my wife assumed it was my company. it sounds like the moving company won't be coming back, and despite the fact that i've asked work time and again if i can help them move, as i'm a dude that works out 5-6 times a week and is fairly well built, but I'm always turned down, it sounds like they have the marketing girls moving stuff, which is very lol and i secretly kinda like it because for all the hours they've spent playing FarmVille or DiamondCrush or whatever loving dumb game they are playing, it's nice of them to earn a paycheck for once. i asked my wife "please tell me you took a picture?" and she said no, it was too embarrassing. which is exactly why you should take a picture imo, but my wife is all class. i'm not.

we now have five days off for the holiday, and we were kicked out of our old office today. we are officially office-less, if you don't count the picture in the original post.

the HR girl i referenced in the original post is absolutely irate, she was talking to me and said "do you remember how you always say Chinese people tell you to 'wait a minute?' and then walk away?" and i was like "yeah", and she said "that's all anyone is doing to me now also" and i said "welcome to china" and she said "i'm furious" and i just wrote "lol". i kinda feel bad for her because i don't think she's that involved in this, other than it was her job to save face for herself and the company, which got blown up when andy and rich went over there and took pictures of our new office. lol!

i'm going to spend the next few days drinking IPAs and Asahi Dry Black and playing with my son and not thinking about work at all, because there's nothing really we can do, because i'll ask people time and again if i can help in any way, shape or form, and even though i'm like the third highest person at the office, everyone assumes i am literally incapable of anything simply because I'm a foreigner. "Hey, don't forget you have to go to Beijing this week for that meeting," they'll say, and I'll say "yup" and they'll say "Did you buy the train ticket yet?" and i'll say "yup" and they'll say "Ok, please don't lose it, and please don't forget it" and i'm like "ok thx". people in my office unironically think they moving better than myself and the foreigners could have arranged. like they feel they are doing the best job that could have possibly been done. which is probably true given the circumstances, because none of us would have let our lease run up without a ready made office ready to move into. just seems like the first step in the moving process, right? ah well, who knows.

will def. keep the thread updated as we figure out if this could be the very thing that causes a mass exit of employees and if this is the thing that ultimately kills the company. it would be funny if it were, lol!

You just have to assume that every single possible thing is going to be hosed up beyond all recognition every day, all the time. Then find places that usually don't gently caress up and hit them up regularly. Whenever I go to a new restaurant I just assume they will gently caress up the dishes. When they don't it's like "hey what a great day", whereas in the USA I assume everything will just run smoothly and when it doesn't people freak out. It's the complete opposite end of the spectrum and totally doable if you have the right mindset

here's some China text from my Facebook from three years ago

quote:

lol best text interaction last night. A girl that used to work at my office asked if I would be willing to help her friend find an oral English teacher. I said ok. All of this happened in Chinese.

Girl: Can you teach my friend's child oral English?
Me: Maybe. What is the age and level of English?
Girl: Grade 1. Does not know any English.
Me: You need a Chinese teacher who can teach in English and Chinese, not me.
Girl: The mother wants a foreigner to teach her child.
Me: I don't care what the mother wants. Tell the mother she needs someone who can teach in their native language first. Then learn oral English.
Girl: Can you help me find a foreigner who speaks Chinese to teach this girl?
Me: No. No foreigner will waste their time with this.
Girl: How much do you want to teach this girl?
Me: I will not do it. Good luck.
Girl: Thank you.

(four minute break)

Girl: If we go by your plan, will you teach her oral English?
Me: My plan is for her to find a Chinese teacher to teach Chinese and English.
Girl: Ok, we will do this plan.
Me: Great, good luck.
Girl: When can you start? This Saturday is ok?
Me: Stop messaging me.
Girl: I hope you have an unhappy life.
Me: Thanks, goodbye.

Aaaaaaaand phone number blocked.

this is one of my most favorite Chinese gags. "Ok we will do your plan" but my plan is just their original plan, under the guise of "my plan". As in "we've decided to do your plan. like i've worked off and on in chinese high schools for after school seminars or whatever and the kids in tenth grade have absolutely perfect writing, you would be floored how good their writing is, but about 3/4ths of them i'd guess are not even somewhat capable of holding a conversation in English. because their classes are taught in chinese with the teachers having them say things like "to mail a letter" in unison over and over and over, so they learn the phrase "to mail a letter" but never have any actual experience making conversation or understand how to converse in english. which is like, i can't say for sure, but what i think to be the most important part of a language.

if that dude has two beers and then goes and makes kids actually listen and interact in english, he is doing something that is incredibly important. people poo poo all over foreign english teachers, and sometimes rightfully so, but their job is actually pretty important in the educational scope of things, because everything in education in this dumb country is so compartmentalized no one ever actually teaches them how to actually have an english conversation\

it wouldn't be an important job if china understood how to run an education system, but it is the deaf, dumb and blind leading people who don't bother to question them, so you actually need this job right now. if they ever revamp the system, they can easily get rid of foreign teachers very quickly. out of the six/seven years i took spanish, i only had one foreign spanish teacher...the rest were all americans. and i'm fluent now (more or less, worked in mexico a bit, spent some time in spain, all of it with no problems at all interacting with people spoken, written, listening or reading)
