What is Dual Universe? Dual Universe is a Sandbox MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) taking place in a vast Sci-Fi universe, focusing on emergent gameplay with player-driven in-game economy, politics, trade, warfare and territory control. All players interact in the same game universe, on the cluster server (Single Shard). The game universe is entirely editable: players can dig and modify the landscape on voxel-based planets, and they can also create structures with the harvested materials: outposts, cities, hovercrafts, spaceships or giant orbital stations. Any structure can be built from a player-made design. The game vision aims to give birth to empires formed by thousands of players and rebuild together the human civilization in a distant corner of the universe. Game Features ● True Massively Multiplayer Experience One single game universe: Novaquark has developed during more than two years a proprietary scalable server technology (the CSSC), capable of handling high concentration of players in any area of the game, in order to gather all the players in the same universe. You can find a description of this technology here, as well as a video of the first stress tests here (there will be progressively more complex tests recorded in videos over time, as the development of the game evolves). It was essential to achieve this goal to make each player a part of a collective story: every action, every decision made by a player will impact - directly or indirectly - all others players. ● Scanning & Mining Gathering specific materials is critical in Dual Universe to build constructs. Some resources will be visible and accessible by just exploring planet surfaces. However, a lot will be hidden underground and will need scanning, with a specific gameplay. Even just finding ore deposits without mining them will be a real activity and can become a lucrative one as this kind of information will always interest big organizations. ● Voxel Building & Crafting Every construction you will encounter in Dual Universe will be built by players: outposts, cities, hovercrafts, spaceships, or even giant orbital stations. Alongside with the CSSC, Novaquark has developed its own voxel engine, optimized for planetary-sized voxel entities and massively multiplayer interaction. Players will be able to dig, build at will on a planet, and create constructions (called Constructs) of any size and any shape in-game. Only the time and efforts put into these Constructs will define how big they can become. On top of the voxel-based structure of a Construct, his maker can use resources he/she has gathered to craft and add “Elements”. You can find a video explaining the building process here. ● Industry: Blueprints & Mass Production As some player-made Constructs will become increasingly popular, the question of mass production will emerge eventually, in order to satisfy the market demand. The Blueprint System and the Factory Units will make a builder’s life easier: when a Construct is finalized, it is possible for the maker to get a Blueprint from it. By using this Blueprint in a Factory Unit, the player will be able to replicate his masterpiece (if he has the necessary quantity of materials and Elements)! ● Player-driven Economy The economy in Dual Universe will grow under players influence: Players will be able to create market exchanges that work with buy/sell orders (not auction houses), trade for resources or finished products. It will be in the reach of everyone to start an industrial or financial empire by doing marketing, logistics, or even creating their own merchant organization. ● Territory Control Territory Control will be about securing land on planet grounds, for strategic, economic or safety reasons. Owning a territory is done via the deployment of a Territory Unit, which will grant the player or his/her organization administration rights to the 1 km wide hexagonal tile associated to it. Rich territories will attract battles, and the need to protect, federate resources and defenses. ● Emergent Politics From politics to territorial and social policies, between brutal power struggles and diplomatic negotiations, empires will rise and fall… And everything players will live in Dual Universe will emerge from the player community itself, based on the specific gameplay mechanics Novaquark has designed. Players will be in control of the game universe, and only players will shape its future towards harmony or chaos. ● Scalable Combat Safe Zones will protect players not interested in conflicts and will prevent Dual Universe to become a free for all PvP game. However, once a player will step out of a Safe Zone, he will be exposed to PvP combat. Combat will use a “lock & fire” mechanism, a design facilitating very large scale battles. Players will be able to specialize into specific weapons through skills and improve their combat prowess with better equipment. ● Skill-based Character Progression As there is no predefined character class nor character level, the character progression will be skill-based. The player will be able to select one skill at a time to train for his/her character. Skills will be trained in real-time, whether the player is online or not. Each primary skill trained at the first level - which will be easy and very quick to reach - will unlock a specific gameplay tied to one of the main activities available, so that any player will be able to experience a broad range of gameplay mechanics if he wants. ● Scriptable Constructs Player-built ships or constructs can be customized through LUA scripting. All the elements inside a construct can be orchestrated to react to events and define new behaviors from AI to special piloting capabilities. The “auto configure” system will build basic scripts for the player automatically. It will be possible for a player to sell a home-made, improved version of an existing script on the in-game market. ● Further Information The game is currently not open to the public, however, news from the developers points to alpha starting in the first part of 2017; full release by early 2018. Considering I have not seen a single topic brought up on the forums about Dual Universe, I thought I would go ahead and assemble what is already known about the game and the community here, as well as see what your opinions are on it.

I was gonna say I'm gonna build a spaceship shaped like a dick but they're kinda like that anyway. Makes you think. Seriously though, as much as I long for a good SciFi MMO the whole VOXELS!!! fad makes me leery whenever a game makes a big deal of it (see also: Crowfall, but even they dialed it back a notch). And player determined politics? Pfthahahaha, oh man, that never goes well, but it IS hilarious to watch.

Wilks Checkov posted:as well as see what your opinions are on it. On the one hand, it looks like Kerbal/Space Engineers meets Eve. On the other hand, it also looks like No Man's Sky meets Star Citizen. If they can somehow pull it off and make a coherent fun game then it'll be mighty impressive. If not I look forward to the rollercoaster of hilarious over-invested fanboy meltdowns and development purgatory.

I am stoked for this game and backed it in the silver tier. It reminds me Empyrion Galactic Survival mixed with Eve. Lets hope they can pull it off. For what it's worth I know a couple people who are in the alpha now and they both backed it at the gold tier.

At this point when a game says "multiplayer" and "sandbox" then it's a pretty safe bet to just pretend the game doesn't exist. The best you can possibly hope for is to be pleasantly surprised 5 years in the future.

I wish their dev team the best, but big promises plus concept art taking priority over gameplay footage screams trouble, especially in an MMO proposal. If they dial it down to just multiplayer there's a chance at getting something good out, Minecraft servers could do some small-scale faction warfare after all.

SweetBro posted:I don't actually think you understand the order of which things in a game are developed. This is exactly what Elite did during their kickstarter though; the moment they had even two fighters flying around in a belt they were showing it in their developer blog. SweetBro posted:And this is completely wrong since any gameplay footage without a sufficiently representable amount of concurrent players (which they won't have) is completely worthless in determine whether or not they can deliver on their promises. And again, Elite was perfectly capable of at least showing basic gameplay during their pitch. If this team can't do that, how can I expect them to have working netcode?

Oh well, you put in more I didn't know they even had footage, this definitely should've been in the OP. Nothing's being destroyed which implies they don't have combat or the voxel deforming working, but this is way way better than storyboards of what they imagine the game will be. Everyone and their kid brother has concept art.

I guess theyre taking a leaf out of the book of one of the two space mmos that currently exist, eve online. Can you blame them for copying a sucessful companies model? Edit: infact reading that Kickstarter basically makes it sound like first person eve online mixed with some star wars galaxies + voxels. Eve bits: Lock and fire combat, training a single skill at a time, markets working on buy/sell orders, limited trial accounts with a monthly subscription for premium time, and tradable ingame items redeemable for premium time SWG bits: Uninstanced Player cities & housing, crafted by players, politics, ship artchitects, etc Also ship vs ship combat is a stretch goal? Edit: Their kickstarter is also asking for 500k euros, assuming across their 24 staff, their average pay is 50k each a year, they can afford to pay their devs for 5 months from this kickstarter, for a game they want to release in the end of 2018?
