So my xbox one died but I've got an ancient gtx660 in my comp, which just so happens to fall under the recommended specs for Fifa 17. I've never played any of the previous titles on the PC before, so I've got a few questions.

1) Is the PC community active? And is there crossplay with consoles in matchmaking and the like?
2) Will my lovely GTX660 actually run this well enough to have it looking sexy or am I going to be playing at 20 FPS with FIFA 13 graphics?
3) Am I dumb to buy this on PC instead of just waiting to fix my xbone?

Like this PC has been my dedicated FM/Grand strat machine for years now with it's beefy processor (i7, SSD, etc) but the graphics card isn't really that good anymore so I tend to not buy anything graphics intensive on it. So I've no idea how it'll run... I think the most intensive game I've run on it recently would be BF4 and like Shadow of Mordor but neither of which were at their highest settings.

Anyways what do you all think?

1. It's a fraction of the size of the console communities and FUT is rife with cheaters (they terminate the match as soon as it starts and get themselves a win. largely it's just an inconvenience) but there are still thousands of people playing all the popular game modes. Sometimes when we played pro clubs we'd face the same club several times in a row though, stuff like that.
2. I have a GTX780 and a core i7-4820k, I run 16 at a constant 250FPS, you'll probably be able to run it at max settings and get at solid framerate. it will actually run much better than it would on the xbox 1 most likely.
3. That's kind of up to you to decide, in the xbox you'll have an easier time finding low-latency matches, it really depends on your preferences, I found I prefer to play FIFA on my PC as I watch TV shows and movies on the secondary monitor.

It's gonna be a pain in pro clubs now that they removed the origin chat rooms you could access from within the game, going to have to switch to voice chat or use our smartphones.

It's also super stupid cause there's a ton of apps that automatically pop to foreground like iTunes. I hope this gets fixed soon.

My impressions of the game:
Player switching hasn't been fixed, it's as bad as always.
Shielding is very useful but players often don't seem to know which player they're supposed to shield it from and would shield from a player further apart from the ball giving away position to one closer to it.
The tackling radius of defenders has been greatly increased and generally they pull off more appropriate tackling animations that are more likely to win possession.
Containment and team containment has been nerfed even further, if EA want to discourage players form using it they can just remove it and free the buttons for something else.
The fact that team tactics can now be edited permanently means that more team play ultra-high pressure, so I guess soon enough everyone would just switch to 'hektic jukez high pressure tactics' and that's all you're gonna see all year.
All the cunts do Pogba's dab celebration.
Skills have been nerfed, players can't seem to start the animations when they're off balance and would take another touch first, moreover the exit animations now seem more random so skill moves will often induce heavier touches and give away possession. Defenders are also better at tackling after a skill move. Rip ball rolls.
Goalkeepers now dominate the near post, even from very close to goal, 1vs1 situations are no longer guaranteed scoring opportunities like they were in 16.
Players in general need to take more touches before they can take a shot, it's much harder to shoot from the volley or tap into an empty net.
Pace, Strength, Dribble are still the most important stats.
Threaded through ball is not a new feature, it just allows you control whether the through ball will be played through the defenders or ahead of the player, in 16 it would automatically opt for a threaded through ball.
No-touch dribble has been slightly nerfed when stationary but you can still use it to do rapid diagonal direction changes when sprinting, so it's still OP when abused.
Goalkeepers have better positional routines but still constantly parry the ball directly to the path of the attackers. I conceded 4-5 goals from bad deflections.
The squad building challenges are cool.
The manager actions have been revamped and if you just do them you'll start off with 3-4 extra packs and several thousand coins.

Menez is a beast and a great cheap starting striker.

I'm loving Menez so far, pacey, decent shooting, great dribbling 4*\4* and you can get him from like 3k coins. N'tep is another great cheapish Ligue 1 player, he's like a slightly downgraded martial but still great. In fact I built a rather spiffy full chem Ligue 1 team for something like 15k and I'm pretty happy about it.

The difference between 1 pace and 99 pace is something like 4 km\h, less than 10% of the max sprint speed of a 99 sprint player.

I'm pretty sure that chem does exactly what it's advertised to do, at least irt to every stat that can be measured, the differences are just not that noticeable by themselves.

the chem bonuses just break any semblance of balance FIFA has, FUT is all about min\maxing and building totally OP squads. an 82 rated squad in FUT is the equivalent of a 90 rated squad in h2h seasons, it's just a big mess.

This will probably be the last time I bring this up since it's not provable either way and can enter scripting/momentum tinfoil territory but I'll reiterate that the stat boosts simply don't feel like as big as they're claimed to be and that I saw a high level pro player answering questions about this years edition and echoed my sentiments exactly. He said what I thought earlier- chem styles confer a boost but not near what EA has said they do. The guy who said this is the same guy who would use the non-upgraded 83 Griezmann over the 84 nif Griezmann in tournaments because he knew that card performed better from hours of playing despite it going against logic. This was before his thoughts were confirmed by the chemgate poo poo that showed that upgraded nif cards were on base chem. So basically I trust the pro's opinion on the matter.

Again a lot of it is subjective, how you play etc. and I do believe that certain combinations of stats, height, traits, body type etc, can create players that play way better than expected. Sometimes I'm almost certain they've entered the stats wrong. There's no way fifa 13 Arnautovic played like his stats or 15 Deulofeu for example. Dabo looks like a nice card though, him an Tolisso will be great if they get IFs again.

Until chemgate 2 comes along we'll never know for sure. As I said, I think it's safe to assume that any stat that people know how to measure (basically only dribbling) get the proper boost, as for the rest, placebo is a hell of a drug. I think some stats just don't make much of a noticeable difference or have rather unimpressive returns when you hit the upper end of the range, Pace for instance, it feels like the difference between 87 and 98 isn't that huge, I have Di Maria and first I used catalyst on him but I felt he couldn't really burst past players despite his pace, then I switched to Sniper that has a +15 dribbling boost and no pace boost and it feels like no one can catch up to him.

Either way, Dabo feels like a stonewall to me, his height plays a huge part in it for sure but he really feels like no one can push him off the ball and I don't believe it would have been that way with only 79 str.

So yeah some guy on reddit repeated most of the experiments that people came up with during Chemgate and found that the stat distribution advertised by EA is wrong, I didn't actually read it in depth but I think the stat boosts are still large and in some cases even larger - https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/58ffrp/finally_figured_out_chem_boosts_down_to_a_science/

It's funny what a difference playing at different hours of the day makes in regards to the skill level of your opponents.

Yesterday night I tried to qualify to the weekend league, I played 3 matches out of my four attempts, reached the finals twice and lost once in penalties and once in regular times, almost every match (even before the final) was challenging, good opponents who played very aggressive defense etc, it sucked rear end. I was too tired to play the fourth attempt and figured out it was probably gonna be simpler to attempt to qualify during the day, so this afternoon I tried again and won every match with 2+ goals. Don't waste your qualification attempts at odd hours in which only hardcore players play, I guess.

So yeah, gonna try the weekend league for the first time, I hope it doesn't suck.

Screw around with the custom tactics, it makes a lot of difference this year. I can post mine when I'm back home later.

I also find that having a tough as nails midfield that can put significant pressure on the ball movers does a hell of a difference particularly if you don't like to sit back and play count attacking, I play Matuidi and Dabo and just constantly harass the ball movers.

Not that my record is anything amazing, it's about 50% wins, Div 1.

Also get Menez, Martial and Ben Arfa cause those guys are sick.

I've played a lot of FIFA the last 10 years. I feel like I am really struggling this year.

1) My guys make a lot fewer runs, and mostly just hanging around the border to the last 1/3.

2) My 85+ pace guys gets caught by 60 pace defenders all the time, even in full sprint with a long touch of the ball. I'm not going full pace squad, but it just seems a bit ridiculous.

3) The defenders are way too good. They vacuum the ball away from attackers way to easy. They just run full speed into the player and magically gets the ball.

4) Fouls are very rarely called unless the opponent does a sliding tackle. No point in having FK specialists, since you only get to use them once in every 8'th matches.
5) Some opponents use a very weird high pressure tactic where their guys are right on top of me all the time. Whenever i passed the ball they would insta-tackle me and get the ball. Very very rarely did they miss a tackle. Seemed like the bug last year where you could press two buttons, and your guy would auto-hunt and tackle the ballcarrier. Only played like 5-8 matches of these, but they were absolutely impossible to play against. I tried using high pressure myself, but nothing i tried came close to my opponents tactics.

I get it that I probably have to change my playing style, but the game seems very weird to me this year, and I have trouble coping :(

1. that's a thing. gently caress around with your custom tactics to make them a bit more proactive but players this year have a new routine where they run back to receive the ball. Players with High defensive workrates suck for this reason. the "speed" and "passing" settings in custom tactics make players run forward faster and make riskier runs. Also of course L1 triggers manual runs.

2. you have to shield the ball if a defender touches you cause otherwise the attacker's feet disengage from his brain for some odd reason and he stops running.

3. if people defend aggressively they'll get turned around your attacker when you shield the ball.

4. shield the ball, get way more fouls.

Just shield the ball, I guess would be the gist of what I'm saying. shielding gives a huge advantage to the player with the ball, regardless of strength difference.

Also, try this one cool defensive trick EA don't want you to know about : manually switch control to one of your attackers and hold R1, observe as your team maintains perfect shape and wins possession back without you having to do anything. I was skeptical at first as well but it works more often than not!

The discrepancy between OVR and actual player stats\performance in 17 is probably the worst it's ever been (for regular cards, IFs have always had arbitrary OVRs), Lacazette is a poo poo card that plays a lot worse than Menez (shorter, worse dribbling, worse weakfoot), his only advantage is +5 finishing and that's nearly meaningless cause with Menez you'll get into way better positions and shoot well with both feet. Don't buy, imo. I switched to a 41212 and use Ben Yedder alongside Menez, another awesome striker who only goes for 850 coins.

Yet another player who is all in all underwhelming despite his high OVR is matuidi, short, poo poo passing, 2*\2*, isn't particularly strong and has really poor dribbling; Dabo honestly just performs so much better. It looks like Kante might be good but he'll screw my chemistry.

As for players who are actually worth it, Thiago Silva is really great in this, I pair him up with Kamil Glik IF (which I bought for like 28k) who is also very good, a touch slow but it matters less this year, particularly for tall\strong defenders.

Ben Arfa is still just about the best player in the game though, really recommend buying him.

I like Martial, his passing is a bit poo poo but he makes up for it with his pace, strength and dribbling. And yeah free kicks are poo poo, I also just do the lay off or simply pass, not worth taking a pop with how weird they are.

As for breaking the defensive\counter-attacking players, I actually don't think it's that big of a deal, my team is pretty much all agile dribblers so it's easy to just walk the ball and force the opponent to press and then you just play a 1-2 pass behind him, very easy to pull of on the wing. Really those tactics force the opponent to be incredibly passive so just play the ball patiently and force him to start chasing you around, if you set your mentality to ultra attacking you can also force your opponent to kick long balls all game long as he won't have many passing options in the back.

Oh and I now think Niang and Menez might be the best strikers in the game.

People in r\fifa complain about how hard it is to score against AFK players but whenever it happens to me I just walk the ball towards the defenders (walk! don't sprint) which forces the cursor to change, at that point the 'controlled defender' becomes a dummy and won't tackle the ball so you just continue walking around him repeat until you're in a good scoring position, etc. It is annoying cause whenever you miss you're gonna wait about 60 seconds until the GK is forced to kickoff and the match takes around 25 minutes to complete but it's really easy to win.

I think people just try to sprint through the defense which is something the AI reacts very competently to by covering for one another and occasionally even doing automatic clearances but really if you let go of sprint the AI does nothing at all when you approach it.
