I can get behind 3-Gatsu's look because it's obviously stylistic and highlights the MC's depression (and the Elder Sister's... something? Her lines toward the end of that last episode hinted that she might be sitting on some issues herself... I mean, she works at a bar and is adept at handling drunks, so there's obviously some hidden depths there...), so I can dig it. vv: And where is Dad, I wonder? Yeah, I'm... with you.  Totally needed a minute myself.However, it is good that Rei saw it and reacted as he should. Becoming involved with this family is helping him and drawing him back into feeling his feelings, and even his rivalry/sorta-friedship with ... um, Harunobu, I think, is chubby kid's name? seems to be softening him a little.
