Nice! I don't know anything about Rei and Momo's VAs, but Ai Kayano also voiced Teko in Amanchu, Kana-chan in Chihayafuru, Mayaka in Hyouka, and Goth-loli-sama in Shirobako. Pretty drat good range considering how different they all sound.

Kana Hanazawa is also the voice of Nadeko from the -gataris, Sonohara in Durarara, Onodera in Nisekoi, Naho in Orange, and the blue-haired girl in Teekyuu!

I've heard it's primarily newspapers that pay to host tournaments and for the exclusive rights to list results and such, and their "salary" comes largely out of that. Not sure how true that is.

Yes, they explain it further in the 3-gatsu manga. Most of the major tournaments are sponsored by newspapers. The manga also has end-pages written by pro or retired pro shogi players who spend a page writing about how the actual shogi scene works, and it seems like the the mangaka has tried to keep the setting as realistic as possible.

- Shots of his apartment at the beginning: In just a few shots, Shinbou communicates all the basics of Rei's life and personality, but leaves out the most important details for later, where they would make more of an impact.

These opening shots, and indeed almost all of the first episode, are 1:1 taken from the manga panels right down to the camera angles. Shinbou took that already fantastic framing and put movement and that deliberate pacing to it that really lets it sink in.

I can skim over those two pages of manga in just a few seconds, but being forced to have my gaze linger on each detail of Rei's room while listening to the sounds of his neighborhood really wowed me. Great directing. "Don't change what's already perfect about the source material, just make it shine like it never could in still, black and white panels." or something like that.

Lets hope Shinbou can keep this up for a whole season. Judging by peoples opinions of the source, it seems there's plenty of good material for him and Shaft to work with.

I think that Kyouko is at least somewhat malicious in episode 8, or rather she's taking a bit of petty revenge for the way that Rei's presence in her family essentially stole a lot of her father's affection away. We've already seen that Rei feels guilty about it, he even left home to live alone because of those feelings, and I think Kyouko knows that. Being a rather petty person, and despite probably understanding that her situation isn't actually Rei's fault (he was just a sad kid being himself, nothing more), she comes over and takes advantage of his unwarranted feelings of guilt towards her. She imposes, she stays over, she reminds him of what he did to her family life, she taunts him about his next match opponent being a pitiful old man, and she leaves.

Maybe somewhere behind that front is a sister checking on her little brother who has left home to live all alone in a different town, but if so she hides it well behind layers of cool sarcasm.

Everything else that I would want to say is just manga spoilers, so instead of doing that I'll just say that this adaptation continues to be everything I hoped for, and Matsunaga is a cutie ojii-san.

Do you think there's a decent chance of much of it being covered in the second cour, or is there just too much material to get through?

At the current pace of ~25 chapters per cour there is enough material for four more cours, and the manga is ongoing. That said, the next cour should be very good! I'm a bit sad though, because it looks like this season will probably end right before the Ladybug Bush arc which is one of the best parts of the manga.

I deeply hope the anime gets a second and eventually third season in the coming years!

It's back!

That was a very pleasant episode for the show to return on, with some really interesting animation sequences and little departures from the show's style (that little piece of a TV drama before the Meijin match came on was awesome). You can tell SHAFT is having a lot of fun making this one, and also putting that Koufuku Graffiti experience to good work with all of these super zoomed shots of people eating. Shogi and Food Science Club is the best.

Episode 2, "In which that rear end in a top hat Gotoh gets humanized," was very good. When I get home tomorrow it will be time to make some Kyouko gifs.

I like the continued trend of showing how most ill will between people stems from a simple lack of understanding. It's a lot easier to hate someone when you really don't know much about them.

The tying her to the bed thing is weird and he's the older adult in this situation so yeah it's creepy.

I mean his purpose for tying her hands to the wall was to prevent her from sexually assaulting him while he sleeps.

Also while Kyouko might be less than half Gotoh's age she is an adult, and if anyone is being a creep in this situation it's her.

Edit - This post wasn't very well thought through. Don't tie people to beds without their consent. This is unlawful restraint. Don't go into people's apartments when they have expressly told you not to. This is trespassing.

Their relationship is all kinds of messed up and I never meant to imply it's not. She's legit stalking him and forcing her way into his apartment, he's apparently cheating on his sick wife with a much younger woman.

It's obviously not cool that he tied her up, he should have just thrown her out.

Other than being kind of a dick to Rei and going overboard in punching him, has Gotoh done anything for us to not like him? We only have Rei's perspective which is, slanted, somewhat.

I mean besides beating up a skinny teenager and the entire cheating/Kyouko stuff, he is also just horribly mean to Rei every time they encounter each other. He taunts him, tells him to deliver mean messages to his sister, and generally goads Rei on to the point of rage. Despite the bit of humanization, I still think Gotoh is a huge rear end in a top hat.

The technical side of shogi in this show is mostly just some namedropping (ranging rook, fuji system opening), it's very light in the actual strategics, if you can even say there's any at all. It's more about the poetic/human side of it, like how in the last episode it punctuated the fact that shogi kinda fell in Rei's life as a way to escape his problems.

I remember trying to watch an episode or two of Chihayafuru and I couldn't get into it because I don't know, I felt like the show needed me to be invested in that silly card game. Sangatsu no Lion takes some time for the shogi matches to have some actual presence in the plot, and when it happened I was surprised how invested I got into them.

What I mean in the end is that this is not like Akagi, the author definitely doesn't expect the readers to seriously get into shogi mind games.

Well said except calling Karuta silly.

I love Chihayafuru, but it's the story of Chihaya striving to be the best at the card game while character drama and comedy and feelings happen around that central struggle. It's a sports anime.

3-gatsu is the story of Rei striving to be a better and happier human while he works as a professional Shogi player. It's a character drama.

Chihayafuru requires that you learn about the sport to fully enjoy the story (even if you never play it yourself), while 3-gatsu does not.

An extra thought: When I read the manga and even when I watched the last few episodes I didn't fully understand why Rei thought that Hina was his "savior" all the sudden. I think I understand it better now. When it comes to Rei's main deal in life, Shogi, his motivation up until now has been like treading water. He doesn't exactly love the game, but he wanted to stay self-sufficient so that he wasn't a burden on his adoptive family.

Now he can have a new motivation: protecting and helping his new family. At this point that's exactly what the Kawamotos have become for him.

I think he mentioned private tutoring, so maybe? Either it's for that, or if she decides to switch to some expensive private highschool that the Kawamotos otherwise couldn't afford? I don't think that he's certain it will be necessary, just that those options would otherwise be closed due to their family's financials. If it ends up being the best option for Hina to leave her current school, he wants it to be an option.

Why did they have the finals by themselves with no press, cameras, or officials?

There is certainly one or two officials just off-camera during their match recording the moves and time. There might even be an overhead camera for all we know. I think SHAFT just wanted to reinforce the 1v1 battle feeling, especially when the scene was built around how tunnel-visioned Rei can get when he's too emotionally invested in his matches.

This was a great episode on all fronts. I like how the animators keep experimenting with new styles all the time in this show. Gritty manga sketch style when Rei is pissed off at his opponent and wants to put him in his place. Pastel watercolor backgrounds when all Rei can think about is helping Hina feel less awful. The amount of empathy he has really hits me hard. It's heartbreaking to see someone you care about go through emotional pain, but especially when you've been there / done that and know just how bad it is.

It almost feels bad to have this hero teacher come out of nowhere to lay the smackdown and resolve everything now, because you'd think when things got bad enough that a kid dropped out because of the issues he would have been brought in much earlier.

I'm not sure how much he and the other school administrators knew, and when. It sounded to me like they only became aware of who was doing the bullying when Hina spoke up about it, because the rest of the class was too scared to point fingers. Who knows how much the last homeroom teacher told the administration about the bullying situation with Chiho, considering she just wanted to ignore it all.

Head Teacher does come a bit out of left field, but it's nice to show that not all teachers are jaded and unhelpful when it comes to bullying. At some point students have to rely on an adult to step in and stop this stuff.
