My DM gave us all a special "boon" at the start of the campaign. For my sorcerer, his spell damage is slightly increased but the elements of his spells are randomized.

Undead are a big thing in this campaign, so positive energy got taken off of my element die about two fights after I learned fireball. :allears:

Question to 5e players:

A home brewed rule we used to use, which was actually taken from a Dragon magazine article from mid 80s, was "called shots". You could take a -4 to your attack role and aim for a certain place (i.e. head, heart, arm, leg, etc.) and get a x2 to damage, once you got to level 4 you could take a -8 and do x4. Is there any rule like that in 5e?

It made higher level combat more short and brutal because obviously monsters could do it too.

Paranoia is what drove my last group. Their paranoia and attention to seemingly useless things made some of the best storylines.

the fighter class gets the ability to target limbs iirc, but the biggest mechanic for 5e is the concept of advantage/disadvantage

basically you roll your d20 twice and take the higher or lower depending. I'm sure you could incorporate that kind of rule and homebrew it to a 3rd roll for bonus damage or something idk

ya i still have no idea how initiative works or i guess from what you said advantage/disadvantage

tao of lmao

initiative is just turn order 1d20 plus your dex modifier

You can apply advantage or disadvantage to any situation that would require a save, check, or attack roll (or i suppose initiative too). Some abilities directly cause one or the other or both, for instance, a barbarian can do a thing called 'reckless attack' in which they get advantage on attack rolls for their turn, meaning they roll the d20 twice and take the higher number for their total. During that combat round, any enemies fighting it will also get advantage for their attack rolls.

Did you ever use the fumbles tables from Dragon?

We had an additional rule, if you rolled your 20-sided die and it rolled off the table it was an automatic fumble. Our gaming table is too small currently , but at the time it was pretty huge (7 foot by 4 1/2 foot and covered in pool table felt) so you had to try hard to roll off it.

Anyone ever play a fantasy role playing game with drinking game rules? Like you can't point, say the first name of anyone playing, say drink, drank, or drunk and especially can't curse while role-playing?

It gets real foggy, fast.

Called shots call for more complex mechanics than what the game provides you to work with in the first place. In most cases you aren't supposed to give people a negative or positive modifier to their checks based on context, you give them advantage or disadvantage. It is far more limited but it also saves time on counting up all the modifiers that came in older more complex versions. Armor weight, size class, light level, exhaustion, prone vs standing, cover, etc. It can be a long list if you adhere to all the rules. It's simple math but over the course of 10 rounds of a five person combat it starts to add up to a lot of number tracking. For some people this is more enjoyable and not a problem, for others it's just tedious.

yeah but not the "off the table" thing. we did a natural 1 was a chance to break your weapon or drop it or drop/throw was based on another d20 roll where you wanted lower not higher. Lower meant you dropped it closer while higher meant it bounced farther or you let go mid swing and chucked it somewhere far, it was all up to DM discretion how far and why

in high school I played D&d with some pals who were pretty experienced. I was a total novice and they kinda explained and did everything for me so it was basically just a lot of "ok this is happening. what do you want to do? Here are your choices. Ok roll this one. Ok cool, you did it. this thing happened. Now this is happening..." etc., etc. And we were usually pretty stoned too so I don't remember anything except that I really enjoyed it. I've always been meaning to play again somehow, but I don't know anyone else who plays and I wouldnt even know how to start on my own.

What's the best way for a total complete beginner to start out? Is there some d&d app or something where it simulates a game, with a nice idiot guide style tutorial? Or maybe some way to play online with other people?

It's something I investigate on my own from time to time but i always feel a little overwhelmed when I start reading all this jargon I don't understand and I end up just giving up.

You could do podcasts like Nerd Poker, or streams like Critical Role, or there's a good goon-based stream called thursday knights on twitch thursdays as well. For me just watching how games generally flow was a better primer than reading any books or tutorials.

you can always play the second edition AD&D based Baldur's Gate saga on p much any pc! and of course if you have never played Planescape Torment that is highly highly recommended but much more of an interactive story than an open ended rpg like BG1/2

i miss by brief roleplaying (...and LARP) phase in middle school, it was mostly all a whole lot of fun but i cant see it being even close to the same experience today and feeling the same way ever again. im happy with playing a few fav old pc rpgs (^) every now and then, usually during the cold months

anybody else also ever play the West End Games Star Wars RPG?

Can I suggest The Adventure Zone? It's a podcast where a guy DMs a 5e campaign for his two brothers and their dad, only one of which has played a lot of D&D.

I listened to a bunch of it with my dad on a car trip and he seemed to understand, so that should give you an idea of how accessible it is.

Gather round, friends, and listen to a story or two of Blake Johnson.

Blake Johnson was one of my favorite characters to play, for a while at least. Blake is the Chad Thundercockingest character I could come up with before I had heard of the name chad thundercock. He is short, has a lot of upper bodystrength, wears a flat bill cap with the sticker still on it, plays lacrosse for the intra mural team at school, lives off of Dad's credit card, drives a lifted truck, and loves to brag about how often he's "chrushed that puss" when near individuals he wants people to think he has slept with. Just an all around awful bro, basically. He was originally created for a d20 modern game being run by Kyle.

Blake Johnson was recruited from a large corporate office where he was working as a temp IT helper, even though he doesn't know how to use computers. His dad got him the job. Anyways it starts with him being called by his supervisor and being told that they are getting hacked, so I had BJ walk up to the server console that was going crazy and turn off the monitor before walking back to his desk and getting on his phone. After work that day, instead of getting into his truck, a man at the entryway to the company invites him to go for a limo ride, during which Blake is recruited to Sector 7, the secret government elite task force, put together to address supernatural or extraordinary threats to humanity. Blake, who loves his country, (and was totally planning to serve in the Marines if this college thing didn't work out) jumps at the opportunity to be paid an excessive amount in order to do it.

Blake shows up to orientation day to meet the rest of the team:
Nick, a sneak man who specializes in covert ops, but can't shoot straight to save anyone's life. He tinkers with weapons on the side.
Andrew, a science man of researching and science, with a side job in tinkering. He is much much better at tinkering than nick.
Sara, a morbidly obese computer specialist. Hardware, software, networking, etc. She can't be beat at computer use, especially if she can use the powerful rig integrated into her mobility scooter
Alison, a femme fatale who is stand-offish and uses twin pistols. Alison makes this same exact character for every game, as it so happens.
Dan, a world renowned German Juggler. That is the extent of character background that Dan gave.

If there were other team members I currently don't remember them but I'll fill in the info as they show up.

The groups first mission was to head to a small village in Mexico, because some creature was slaughtering the townsfolk. We get there and Blake heads to the bar first thing, because he's of the legal drinking age here in Mexico. Anyways he lines up a couple shots of tequila and Kyle has Blake make a fortitude save, which Blake crit fails. So he downs the shots and immediately blacks out, so I have to make a fort save every couple of turns to see if I'm able to do what I wanted to do, otherwise the DM determines what Blake does. I manage to get Blake out onto the street, and not much more. Sara sees the state he is in, and decides to take advantage of the situation. She seduces Blake through several more horribly failed rolls on my part, but luckily Blake is unable to remember the occurence. Except for the fact that the DM declared Sara pregnant. I don't understand why, but he went ahead and did it. Anyways while this is happening a chupacabra shows up and the rest of the group kill it. Mission success, Blake tries to take the credit, nobody else cares enough to dispute it.

In a later mission, we are infiltrating a drug lords mansion so that we can get into a secret black market auction and recover some artifact or something. In order to infiltrate, I use Blake's obscenely high jump and climb checks to scale the side of the building and get in through a skylight. Other people infiltrate at ground level. Dan manages to get in through the back entrance as one of the auctions several entertainers, and Sara forges some digital credentials to get herself in. I don't remember how the rest managed though. During the auction. A super hot babe with bright red skin and horns is put up on the block, and Blake just has to have her. So he maxes out his dad's credit card and takes his prize with him to go to a private room. I ask the DM if he can have it fade to black but he says nah I gotta roll for the sex. Anyways Blake doesn't get an STD but the sexy lady does get pregnant. At this point I promise myself that despite seeking this situation out, I will not be directing Blake towards further potential sex adventures because I don't really want the game or my character to be about that. I do not voice this to Kyle because he is the type of guy who will go against my desires for the humor he sees in it. Further into the auction the other characters manage to get themselves found out, because the artifact came up for sale but none of the other characters had any money left they had spent it all on crafting equipment and upgrading gear, and nobody had thought to request money for the auction. They decided to steal it. They did not decide to do this quietly. Their distraction was to have Dan juggle something to get everyone's attention, and Dan, being uncreative, looks around the room we are in, sees some platinum bags, and declares that his character begins juggling plastic bags. When asked if there is anything in the bags Dan says no. So he makes a performance check, and gets something absurd like 28. The crime boss is loving it, the crowd is loving it, but unfortunately the party is also loving it and has started encouraging him. Someone throws a cat at Dan, and he incorporates it into his juggling. More animals start being thrown, and dan continues to juggle, rolling consistently well. Then the crime boss revs a chainsaw and throws that as well, which is when Dan rolls a natural 20. Kyle describes how Dan catches the chainsaw, and begins juggling everything, except now the chainsaw is lopping the heads off of the poor animals and the now blood covered Dan is juggling the heads and corpses and chainsaw and plastic bags now, and the now blood covered crowd is going wild. Finally Nick is able to break his focus on the show, and grabs the mystical thing, which sets off a pressure plate alarm he hadn't bothered checking for. So now the crowd stops caring about the juggler and starts pulling out weapons or running away, depending on how armed they are. The auction hall becomes even bloodier than before during our groups escape, and Blake manages to get out with his new purchase without attracting attention away from the rest of the group. Blake is informed that the girl he purchased was actually also an important magical thing, but sector 7 hadn't been able to track her/it down yet, so bonus for me.

Between missions, Blake commissioned a weaponized lacrosse stick from Andrew. It has an electrified, reinforced head with razor wire as the netting, so that I can knock people out or maim anything I can fit into the stick. It is heavier due to the reinforcement of the stick and the battery pack for the electrified head. On its first use, the battery bursts and starts eating away the inside of the stick, so I open it up , dump the battery out, and stick a bunch of sand in the battery compartment to compensate for the loss of the battery's weight. It technically worked but I had to have an entirely new stick built because it ruined the circuitry.

One of the missions took place at Blake's school, during a lacrosse match. Of course, Blake isn't going to miss a match, and Dan the World Famous Juggler is the halftime show, so they go to the game while everyone else investigates. The team find the threat and chase it to the Johnson Lacrosse Stadium (built thanks to a hefty donation from Jake Johnson, Blake's dad). I don't remember what the threat was but it showed up during Dan's most popular juggling act: plastic bags. Dan, always the professional. Continues juggling while a massive firefight breaks out on the field, and the crowd assumes it is all part f the show and goes wild. The firefight ends, dan finishes his show, and Blake Johnson is ejected from the game in the third quarter for crippling a goalie that kept blocking his shots. Mission accomplished.

Blake Johnson first died while trying to charge four private military contractors who had shotguns aimed at him.

Blake Johnson was resurrected when we started a Call of Cthulhu campaign, though that's a whole other wall of text.

Session 2 went well. I'm running what I consider very episodic sessions to start. Both games they've gotten a mission, done it, and made it back home. It helps as we're all still new to the system, and peoples' schedules make it so it's really hard to play with a full group weekly.

One thing I need to figure out is what kind of magical items to dole out. The DMG feels really open, I wish there was a list of premade items by level. They're gonna need silvered or magical items to fight some of the mobs I have planned, does an item being +1 count?

i always thought it was cool to give low level parties small magic weapons if any at first, like a dagger or an arrow or something and try to keep other items varied like rings and trinkets.

Most of the DMs I've played with, myself included, tend to be really rough on their wives/husbands. My wife in particular tends to get really upset with me over this.

But back when I was in high school there was definately a lot of preferential treatment for people the DM wanted to gently caress. More tailored magic items, better experience bonuses and the like. I guess the romance fades later in life and at that point you just want to see your SO suffer a bit.
