The Ring Theory and all the freshmen film school CD/YouTube revisionism of the prequels needed calling out. And a Star Wars review is a nice vehicle for that call out.

I was bit concerned when he into that tangent on "Diversity in the Star Wars Universe", but he ended up justifying it. They didn't take the extra "risk" to make its diversity bold.

I still think he showed too much sympathy for Lucas with his rant on how TFA played it safe. To me, it was just Lucas using hindsight to poorly rehabilitate his prequels. TFA was a adequately made product that's best consumed and forgotten about until the next installment.

Red Letter Media is still the only place that I could stand someone actually expressing their opinions on Star Wars. Good job, guys.

Plinkett bitching about idiots defending a bunch of bad movies > Plinkett ripping a watchable, but most forgettable, Star Wars movie with its fair share of problems

I'd argue that Batman, Jason Bourne, Frank Underwood, and Liam Neeson are all Mary Sues. I find the hyper-competent Sue way more annoying than the self-insert Sue. And Rey isn't really either.

Also, that bitching about Mary Sues is a lame and lazy avenue of film criticism, and that's why old-timey film critics as well as RLM didn't go there.

Also, gently caress Max Landis; he's just annoying.

I'm not too hot with the overseas audience bashing, because of the very slight hints of yellow peril. It obviously didn't start with RLM; it's been a thing with bro film geeks for a while.

What's a bit weird about Mike is that he's willing to call a movie racist and gets pretty worked up about it (like in all the Adam Sandler reviews), but he's skeptical when other people, like dumb millennials, do it.

I understand Mike's skepticism when Hollywood does diversify (since Hollywood PR loves pretending they're running on goodwill by taking all of the credit and none of the blame when there's an issue). I just don't want Mike to go full South Park.

Haven't watched Stranger Things yet, but the one Netflix show that's engineered to feel like a prestige drama despite being shallow and boring is House of Cards.

As a fan of the West Wing and someone who actually keeps up with politics (check the av), I can't stand that show because they don't give a gently caress about the politics.

A Democrat announces he's going to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in favor of a jobs program? Get the gently caress out of here.
I think The West Wing also sucks but for different reasons. "The system works despite its problems!"

If I was a Red Letter Media wannabe with a YouTube channel (you know... the very guys mocked in the Episode 7 review), I definitely would attempt making some video essays explaining why both shows suck.

Reloaded: dumb world building

Revolutions: almost a decent a movie about a future city fighting off an invasion of robots if you ignore all the matrix-related poo poo in it

Animatrix: anime

I was teenager when The Matrix sequels and the Star Wars prequels came out.

I was still trying to rationalize the SW prequels at the time because I liked the idea of the Star Wars "Universe" and also I was an idiot in denial. This was also the same time as those Lord of the Rings movies, which I still consider to be great movies set in a fully realized fictional world that I wanted to see more of.

But The Matrix Reloaded was the first time I actively rejected the idea of world building in fiction. It was the first time I really critically asked myself what's the point of meeting all these stupid new characters like the French guy and seeing new places that weren't even mentioned in the first movie, which really didn't need expanding.

The Matrix sequels occupy a special place of bad for me because of that.

So yeah, I think he's bad.

The Hobbit movies aren't even close to the shittiness of the Star Wars prequels.
I legit enjoyed Battle of Five Armies more on a second viewing when I knew what to expect.

The Star Wars prequels just get worse and worse when you watch it again.

Megamind is my test Blu-Ray and DVD at work and I never watched it from start to end but I have seen enough of the movie in 30 second intervals, out of order, to piece it all together.

The character designs are terrible.

Had Mike watched Silicon Valley, he probably wouldn't refer to Zach Woods as "Gabe from The Office".

I guess what I'm really saying is Silicon Valley is a good show.

Just wondering... what do people think of Freaks and Geeks? If we're supposed to take that one line from the GB review seriously, Mike either doesn't like it or seemed pretty indifferent towards it.

I still remember it being the underdog TV show that nobody watched but was so drat good. I'd like to give Apatow most of the credit. But looking at the credits for each episode's director and writer, it's hard to not say Feig was more responsible for making that show what is was.

I guess the lazy narrative would be that F&G was ancient history and that he let his craving for Hollywood power come to his head.

Alright, whatever. It's been years since I sat down and watched the whole show; maybe it's not as flawless as I thought it was.
