Mordja posted:Dredd didn't have, didn't need an origin story. I think it was All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison that did Superman's origin story in 4 panels and 8 words. Nice, very nice. The problem with origin stories isn't origin stories per se. Iron Man's origin story in the film is great because it's both entertaining, informs the character and we haven't seen it before. Amazing Spider Man was pretty unnecessary, although at least they tried to do *something* different by making his start as Spider Man be a revenge spree kind of thing. Man of Steel was the worst for Pa Kent basically telling Clark he should be an Randian Ubermensch and not to inconvenience himself rescuing his lessers

Max Landis overeggs the pudding a bit but he is generally ok. I don't mind him too much in the Double Down BotW. The worst part isn't when he's egging Rich on though, they're all doing that. The worst part is when he tries some diabetes inducing "Oh I only got through this with the help of *my friends*" at the end of the episode. Josh is also fine. Not great, but fine.

Mordja posted:Whenever I see clips of Starship Troopers I'm always shocked at how well it holds up visually. The CGI has a certain verisimilitude that most big budget movies nowadays don't even try and aim for. CGI now is often colourful and flashy in a way that makes a film look and feel like a cartoon, while Troopers uses subtle, earthy tones for the bugs that land so much better for me. From a few pages ago, but one of the reasons that Starship Troopers holds up a lot better compared to stuff around the same time is that there were a limited number of visual effects studios available at the time, and a lot had been booked up at the time the movie was being made. So a lot of stuff that would have been made using ropey CGI for the era was done using traditional stuff like models, in particular all the stuff in space. I think the bugs were the main thing that CGI was used on. The other thing is that actual sets and design was used with the CGI, instead of "lol film everything in front of a greenscreen and plaster it with shiny CGI" LOOKIN' AT YOU GEORGE LUCAS

Arcsquad12 posted:Let's be honest, all visual effects guys in Hollywood are bitter as hell. It's always going to be one visionary accepting the award on behalf of hundreds of workers doing menial animations and working overtime. That's before you get into stuff like mocap performances, because you have to question whether the performer or the animators deserve credit for the award to begin with. Wasn't there a animation studio recently that was forced to close up shop after doing tonnes of unpaid overtime to finish a film per contract, and then the head animator brought this up while receiving an award at a show and was promptly yanked off stage?

The moment the Hobbit films totally lost me was when they were fighting the hordes of goblins, with no sense of threat or that the dwarves were in any danger whatsoever. It felt like Sucker Punch, where the women are basically indestructible, so you don't get invested because there's no tension.
