I hope it's okay if I post this, as it's going to be on youtube soon anyway, and it's just audio. Mike's just uploaded some bits from the upcoming review for patreon supporters, and oh man, I guess this is true what people on the internet say about RLM. Just listen to this.

The fact that twenty future Marvel movies have dates attached to them doesn't mean that they were actually planned beyond marketing. I'm reasonably sure many of them still don't have scripts. The studio execs know that they need to produce three movies in one go, and that's all that matters. There is no big vision, because scripts are written by a dozen of screenwriters who mostly just follow directions on who should have more lines, what stupid cameo should be shoehorned, etc.

Capntastic posted:If Rey's characterization seems hollow it's because all we learn of her is "junk scavenger" and she had no other characters to communicate woth before the plot kicks up. Compare to Luke who is a poor teenager who collects model spaceships and dirtbikes with his friends when he can skip out on farm chores. If anything Rey living in abject poverty should have provided more opportunities to drum up sympathy but they portrayed her as a stoic, working class schmuck who has no real goals or aspirations. She wanted to go into space. She had a helmet.

If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off.

Yeah, modern porn parody names are shameful compared to old ones. Never watched either beyond funny trailers on youtube, but for some reason I am really concerned about the state of parody porn titles.

Seems like he missed a good chance to point out that just because a movie is a mobius strip of self references and repeating themes doesn't make it a masterpiece. I don't really see how it matters if Lucas had some master plan or was just recycling what he knew worked last time. Don't know about Mike, but Plinkett has mentioned it multiple times.

Star Wars! I love Star Wars!

What people often miss in Star Wars is the franchise's odd name. Notice how it's not Space Wars or Stellar Wars, not even War among the Stars? Consider this: 'wars' is a verb. This would make the title an allusion to Lucifer, 'morning star' who is at war with God and his angels. On the other hand, Star Wars sounds almost identical to the Greek word σταυρός (stauros), i.e. cross, which is one of the most recognised symbols of Christianity and Jesus' redemptive suffering on, you guessed it, the cross. So we have this binary in the title, which is a thematic rhyme to the character arc of Anakin 'Darth Vader' Skywalker. Also note that his last name can in itself be considered a nod to his dualistic, yet angelic nature.

Guy Goodbody posted:But why? We know that George Lucas did everything on purpose, so why did he include a racist caricature as a major character in Star Wars? He didn't like black people at the time. Then he grew to like black people and helped creating Red Tails. In a way, George Lucas himself went through a character arc similar to that of Darth Vader.

Natalie Portman, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher are all Jewish. Frank Oz is also Jewish. But the real genius of George Lucas shines through, when you realise that Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness both have/had Jewish wives. Talk about poetry.

I am half-Jewish and Watto from Star Wars doesn't offend me one bit. In fact, the Holocaust is probably slightly above 3 on my 0 to 10 offensiveness scale. Watto is barely 0.1.
