yeah it probably would've been insanely good. I dunno what the ip's future is even, the Japanese teams last game before being disbanded was 4, in 2004. And the quality on the western developed games ranges from 'awful' to 'decent'. But I think the contempt for foreign devs and those games not selling very well sunk any more non-Japanese SH games

The last one was Book of Memories for vita in 2012

I could make a long gay boring post about where things went wrong, starting with SH4, but it totally went wrong and Konami's business choices are bizarre

The extreme jump in graphical fidelity + adroit lighting design makes me actually scared in SH2. The game looks great, my only gripe is the analog tank controls but that could just be a PC problem.

if you haven't fixed it yet, go to options and change controls from rotation style to directional style

SH2 is seriously good and my favorite of the series, especially the soundtrack. There is one section early on that has a track that is physically uncomfortable to listen to in an unsettling way. Really really good sound design.

Yeah directional is what I'm playing on, but it's tank controls with an analog stick which kinda annoys me. I've adjusted to it after about an hour but I wish I could use the dpad.

I found out that every time I close the game I will have to re assign every control input and the game has stopped recognizing L2/R2 and instead of jumping through annoying hoops for 15 minutes every time I want to play a game ill wait until I have my PS2 back and play the game there, so thats the end of my silent hill journey for now.

tfw you can only run a game from 2004 by downloading a 500mb fan patch programmed by a convicted pedophile from a geocities website that caps the download speed to 2kbs

It's halfway through October! hopefully everyone is getting through at least one horror game this month. Here's a suggestion!

SILENT HILL 3 (PS2, PS3, 360, X360, PC)

SH3 is a game that I like just a tiny bit more than SH2 and is my favorite of the franchise. The game runs on the same engine as SH2 and despite being developed alongside what would become SH4 it plays so close to SH2 that you probably won't notice the difference. You play as Heather Mason as she descends into a conflict within the cult of Silent Hill. The game itself is more of a sequel to SH1 and I'd recommend you at least play that or familiarize yourself with the story. Heather is my favorite SH antagonist, the weird and disjointed dialogue from the other mainline SH games are dropped in order to give Heather a lot more character- and the game itself has a lot of other interesting characters.

Silent Hills 3 is gorgeous, there are a lot of moments of extremely well done visuals like in the gif above. The game also features some of the best puzzles in the series and includes a puzzle difficulty setting at the start of the game. The combat is pretty close to SH2 and the game's camera is softly fixed. I'm sure most fans of the genre have played this game but it's worth a revisit or shot if you've never played it.

Played SH1-3? Heard 4 wasn't so good? Give it a shot!

SILENT HILL 4: The Room (PS2, PC)

SH4 is the final game Team Silent created before being disbanded by Konami. Despite being developed alongside SH3 it came out at the end of the PS2's life cycle. SH4 is easily the most vague and abstract game of the entire series. Where the themes of what guides each protagonist in SH1-3 are usually very clearly spelled out for the player, SH4 is a lot foggier in its representation. What you should know about SH4 before you decide to play it is that anything you've heard about the game's difficulty or intuitive controls are entirely true. The game is intentionally designed to be unfun to play and gets progressively more frustrating as the game continues. There are all sorts of design choices like (spoilers for IT who's playing the series) limited inventory space designed around a cumbersome item box, occasionally invincible enemies, a tricky to use camera, increased difficulty in regards to all enemies, the escort quest that the entire last act of the game is designed around, and little things like making the conversations you have with the stutterer outside of cutscenes so you can't skip them . Team Silent set out to make a game that imparted a little bit of how unfun it would be to live the main character's reality. How necessary that was is debatable, combat in the other games is never very good but they also didn't go out of their way to frustrate the player.

But SH4 does a lot of things that no other game does. Its focus on voyeurism in the apartment, the memorable scenes it sets up, the focus on the antagonist rather than the main character. There are a lot of things in SH4 that make it the scariest game of the series for me but don't be afraid to put it on easy when you play it initially. I think it's very underrated and the story and visual design is the culmination of Team Silent's work.
