It might end up being a bad show, but I think from the first episode it's safe to say it will at least try to take its themes seriously. I'd say it's more likely to be another Aldnoah than another Gate, if anything.

What would they gain by not changing the names? I don't see a single benefit in using real-world names for the countries here, and several in changing them.

"Th- something" is good enough for some random country that got dunked on before the show even started and likely won't play any significant role in the story--and if it does, the name will probably start coming up often enough to make it memorable, where it can graduate from "Th- something" to whatever it actually is.

What I heard was shiroki majo wa warera wo sukuttewakurerusa (i.e., the white witch will save us), and the Japanese subs/internet reaction back that up, so actually in that sense it was definitely mistranslated. However, there seems to be some speculation that it was misrecorded or something, and he was supposed to say sukuttehakurenusa, which would mean the subs are right and the actual audio is wrong.

 She actually said she was the hero who saved the country, not the witch (she did say "witch-sama" instead of "you", though). Possibly an important bit for showing how people are reacting to news of her existence.

It makes more sense to me to do this: "Witch-sama is the hero who saved Eylstadt!" -> "You're the hero who saved Eylstadt!" instead of this: "Witch-sama is the hero who saved Eylstadt!" -> "Hero-sama is the witch who saved Eylstadt!" -> "You're the witch who saved Eylstadt!" edit: I just left the "-sama" in to show the words with it were being used like a pronoun.

I'm more wondering why they didn't tell the guy in the first place. Keeping it a secret from an inner circle member like that somehow makes even less sense than talking about country-destroying secrets a short walk from camp like that. Especially if you're just going to tell him when he inevitably comes to ask about it later anyway.

I'm in pretty much the same spot as Spiritus/Cialis/Mokinokaro, I think. There's a lot of potential here that feels like is being squandered, especially over eps 4~6. We're not getting a lot of character development for the main characters, and the political/military side doesn't quite feel well written enough to carry things. Hopefully they can get back into things with the next episode, since leaving the capital again after three episodes there will be a nice change of pace at least. Poking around the staff's past works, neither the director nor the series comp guy have really done anything else I've enjoyed, so I guess it could just be a matter of taste.
