I have a bad itch for a good RPG and none of the games I've found on Steam or GOG seem to scratch them. Basically I want to recapture the magic and sense of discovery I felt while playing Super Mario RPG on Super Nintendo when I was a kid.

It should have:

-fun, interesting characters that you really get attached to.

-An engaging storyline that is not too convoluted

-Nothing too gimmicky when it comes to the battle system. Innovative is okay, but if it's just taking turns and plinking away I'm ok with it.

-a top down third person perspective

-I'm flexible on graphics but I'd prefer something 32bit or less

Any RPGs like that floating around for PC? (no console games pls).

Games I have already tried and still left me feeling hollow:

Bastion

Transistor

Hyper Light Drifter

Dungeon of the Endless

***
The last RPG I played which made me feel genuine joy was Undertale, but I'm starting to come down off the Undertale high and I need a new game to stop me from doing something desperate like becoming part of the fandom.

Pls help, goons.

Gamesearch Update!

Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions! I think I have a lot to work with now. The ones I'm looking at now are:

Chrono Trigger

Final Fantasy IX

Ultima VII

Good point.

You could always get an SNES emulator and take a crack at the Mother series.

What a persistent nightmare!
....but enough about my posts
The RPG-30 is pretty neat, it fires a smaller munition first that is designed to trigger active protection and allow the main warhead to go through.

My only other recommendation would be Secret of Mana but I only played a tiny bit of that so someone else would have to back me up.

Dragon Age was a perfect RPG, but a question that interests me more in the same vein is what is the most highly recommended RPG by older brothers? Probably a PS1 Suikoden game.

Secret of Mana matches the basic description, but its characters are non-existent.

The graphics are fine, FF9 benefits from having an exaggerated cartoony style so it doesn't age as harshly as more realistic designs. If it helps, think of the pre-rendered environments as some kind of abstract painting--they basically are. Tied for first with two other games for me... neither of which came out later than 2008.
