You know what would be really good is if Tabletop Simulator did an adaptation of Arcadia Quest. I love Arcadia Quest, but my wife is my only IRL friend (who is also nearby and who plays RPGs) and it's not as fun with only two people.

Secrets of Grindea is pretty good though still in early trashcess. It's a clear spiritual successor to all the amazing SNES rpg's from back in the day. It's on steam for 16 bucks and there is lots to do though not finished. Also lol if you aren't willing to emulate chrono trigger, earthbound, and lufia 2.

Grandia 2. I'm not sure if it has been ported to PC, but you can probably emulate the ps2 version. Characters are good, it has a very unusual and interesting plot and the combat system is unique but familiar. It is real time turn based but apart from attacks and spells it also requires characters to run into different positions, which effects stats. It's not top down perspective though.

I have been looking really hard at Grandia 2. I loved the poo poo out of that game for Dreamcast, but I never finished it because my Disc 2 was corrupted, so I only played up to the part where whatsisface is going into the machine to get the Horns of Valmar taken out. I really want to finish it, but I don't know if I have the strength to replay everything up to that point.

I think Grindea is okay but it's really light on the engagement unless you like punching things until the RNG drops what you want. I mean, I realize it's in the title, but it's literally an RPG about grinding drops.

OP, I would highly recommend LISA: The Painful RPG. It actually came out around the same time as Undertale, and there are a striking number of both similarities and large contrasts. Like Undertale, you have turn-based combat w a bevy of funny and likeable characters, in a world where your choices really matter. Unlike Undertale, the world of LISA loving sucks. It's a post apocalyptic hellhole where most everyone's addicted to drugs, people are all killing each other for their stuff, and grotesque mutated abominations roam free. It's called the painful rpg for a reason: it's not easy, and the choices you make are often between "bad" and "worse". I came out of the game feeling repulsed, but strangely moved.

I just downloaded and played a game called Suidoken 2 on the playstation network. I normally am not a great jrpg fan but I played the whole game in just a few days. Lots of cool character collecting and neat base building based on who you end up recruiting. You should try to check it out if you have a chance. The story is pretty fun and there are cool combat tricks you can pull off.

Oh yeah Suikoden is good fun too. Not the best of the best, but it's great all the same. If you play 1 before 2, the world lore continues and you get to see parts of the country you led the revolution for in the first game, and you can even recruit the super overpowered hero from Suikoden 1 to help you out. It's such a shame the rest of the series went so off the rails because the lead designer left.

The perfect RPG is SaGa Frontier, which features a cool robot, some half-vampire lesbos, an entire dimension that is a casino, and a plotline where you can devour your brother for his magical power.

Also, if you are okay with emulating, SMT I and II are both classics. Excellent stories, great classic turn-based gameplay and fantastic first person dungeons with a typical overworld.
