The old thread's OP is a mess, time for a new thread!

WHAT IS IT?

The second season of Iron-Blooded Orphans (IBO), the first season of which aired in Autumn 2015.

Three centuries after the catastrophic Calamity War, Earth is ruled by four superpowers which ruthlessly exploit their offworld colonies, leaving the colonists to wallow in poverty and worse. Set above them all to enforce the peace is Gjallarhorn, a massive army accountable to no one but themselves, controlled by seven families - the Seven Stars - who style themselves after the nobility of the Calamity War era. Interested only in power and prestige for their own sake, the Seven Stars maintained an iron grip on the inner sphere, helping suppress any dissent against the economic blocks, until...

In the first season, Kudelia Aina Bernstein, a young, sheltered nobleman and figurehead of the Martian independence movement, hires child soldier PMC Tekkadan to escort her to Earth, to begin negotiating independence for the Martian region of Chryse from Arbrau. Backed - and manipulated - by various factions (Gordon Nobliss, an Earth-based billionaire who wants the rights to exploit Mars' natural resources for himself; Teiwaz, a less-than-legal Jovian shipping syndicate that want Gjallarhorn's nose out of their business; Togonosuke Makanai, the disgraced former prime minister of Arbrau; and McGillis Fareed, the son of Gjallarhorn's commander-in-chief, who wants to purge his organisation of corruption and restore it to its former glory), hounded by Gjallarhorn the entire way, Tekkadan eventually make it to Earth, where they fight Gjallarhorn forces in a climactic battle in the streets of Edmonton to allow Makanai to be re-elected and grant Chryse the right to self-determination and self-governance.

It has now been several years since the end of s01, and things have changed:

https://files.catbox.moe/1mfz2k.webm
Despite all this, Gjallarhorn is definitely still around, now with McGillis at its head, and new enemies are coming out of the woodworks - so welcome back for another season of double-crossing, great mecha design, surprisingly good on-screen English text, fights that make you wince, and simmering sexual tension between Mikazuki and Orga.

THERE'S A MILLION OTHER GUNDAM SHOWS! WHERE DOES THIS FIT IN THE CONTINUITY? DO I NEED TO HAVE WATCHED ALL EIGHT THOUSAND EPISODES OF MOBILE WING G GUNDAM: AFTER ENDLESS TURN-00?

Gundam shows exist in a bunch of completely unrelated timelines and are largely self-contained. Outside of OVAs and direct sequels, it's rare for Gundam shows to be related to each other at all. The exception to this is the "main" Universal Century timeline where the shows are designed to build on each other.

IBO is a brand new timeline, so you don't need to have seen any other Gundam shows to watch and enjoy this. If you like the idea of well-written and pretty smart military sci-fi with giant robots in it, or the idea of a show that knows when to go for quiet character-building moments and doesn't have non-stop gratuitous battles, I definitely recommend watching IBO.

However, this is a direct sequel to the first season of Iron-Blooded Orphans - for reasons that are fairly obvious, you should definitely watch that before watching this second season. The first season can still be watched on Daisuki and Crunchyroll (see below for a link).

WHERE CAN I WATCH IT?

The show is simulcast on Daisuki.net, and airs one week behind on Crunchyroll. If you live in a region where neither of those two are available, HorribleSubs are fansubbing it.

If you're in Asia or Oceania, you can also watch it for free straight on the Gundam Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJV1h9xQ7Hx9DTLCR2uW7m-YKGslMJUcC

WHO'S WORKING ON IT?

Same key staff as the first season: Mari Okada (anohana, Aquarion Evol, WIXOSS, Toradora!) and Tatsuyuki Nagai (also anohana) are back as writer and director, respectively, and Masaru Yokoyama (BBK/BRNK, Rolling Girls) is still composing. The mecha design is still primarily by Ippei Gyobu (Reconguista in G, Kanaberi (:swoon:)). As usual with Gundam, the animation is being handled internally by Sunrise.

:siren: THE RULES :siren:

We had some issues with the last thread, so we're keeping Bad Seafood's rules for this one:

1. No discussing other Gundam shows.
This is a thread about IBO, not Gundam as a franchise. Couching everything you have to say about IBO in terms of 0079 metaphors makes for posts that are boring, not particularly insightful, and impenetrable to people who might not have seen 0079 (or any other Gundam show you're making references to). It's fine to say you think IBO does something really well and so does another Gundam show; avoid discussions about who is the show's Char. If you want to make an in-depth comparison between IBO and another Gundam show, take it to the Gundam megathread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3746278

2. No discussing plamo or toys.
Posting pictures of Gunpla models to discuss the setting or its technology is fine, but don't use this thread to talk about the merchandise. If you want to discuss IBO model kits or figures, take it to the Gunpla thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3678195

3. Don't be a dick to people about spoilers.
Since there's probably going to be people watching this on CR and thus stuck a week behind the Daisuki people, feel free to discuss plot beats in the thread, but consider spoiler tagging major twists until the next episode is out. Don't freak out if someone asks you to put spoiler tags on something, and don't be a dick to people using spoiler tags.

I felt that the very last episode of the first season abruptly and weirdly pulls its punches in its final quarter, but other than that, I think s01 was fantastic and I really hope s02 can be as good.

Any doubts I had about the show continuing to be pretty savage about child soldiers disappeared the moment Atra said "on the other hand," though, and I'm glad.

Yep: "As Tekkadan had proved the value of child soldiers, masses of children were sent to war and the number of Human Debris grew"

I got worried when it started saying how all got better, but those worries quickly disappeared when that was followed by "OTOH, Tekkadan proved child soldiers are loving sick so those got pretty popular".

The series making it very clear the ideological differences between old and new Tekkadan was pretty good too, I can imagine that will be a source of internal conflict. And Mika's appearance at the end was so drat cool, too.

I also liked the fact his first response on hearing an explosion was to draw a pistol he was carrying.

The pistol he brought with him to pick up friends from a school.

It's interesting to see just how venerated Tekkadan is getting. All Cookie and Cracker's schoolmates viewed "Dying for Mars in battle!" as The Coolest Thing Ever, while they... don't.

I hope they go somewhere interesting with that. They have an orphanage now, full of kids who love Tekkadan at a time where even more kids are being recruited to fight. Hope it leads to some of the internal conflict we perhaps should have seen in the first season.

Wonder who will be in the mask in the OP, because it could well not be McGillis.

Gjelly's reputation was based in part on the idea they were invincible. That you don't dare gently caress with the guys with a monopoly on new MS engines, because they will stomp you into the ground.

Now a group of child soldiers ripped them a new rear end in a top hat, and suddenly everyone's realizing that maybe they can take 'em. So a lot of people are trying.

Add in the fact that the shining knights of Earth who shun any impurity have been building insane cyborg killbots who nearly slaughter parliament (with beloved young activist Kudelia Aina Bernstein able to go "Yeah, this kind of shady crap is their usual MO" from firsthand experience), and they're going to lose a lot of power, even if they try to shove it all onto McGillis's father, who was very bad and the only one who did anything like this, no really.

(...And now, thinking about it, considering the masked man... who's confirmed alive, knows McGillis is up to some shady bullshit, and has reason to want vengeance while being unable to show his face in public? Huh.)

Well, right now it could just be that Mika's the closest thing to family they have left, barring their grandmother and, you know, each other. They lost both their brothers already, and Mika charging off into danger might remind them of that... unpleasantness.

But yeah. Could be some buildup there. Agree with your hopes.

Something that reminds me of, though, is how the episode does a pretty good job of distinguishing Cookie and Cracker despite both of them having a similar role in the narrative and the whole twin thing going on. Cracker's more confident and outgoing, Cookie's less. The one shot of Cracker offering her hand said a decent amount about both in very little screen time. Nice touch.

It's probably safe to assume that Cookie and Cracker know the full story of how Biscuit died, while the rest of their classmates only know the broad strokes/watered-down version that comes off more heroic. Hell, the rest of world now thinks it's cool to use child soldiers for combat operations simply because Tekkadan did it first. I would not be surprised if a few of Cookie and Cracker's classmates want to join Tekkadan just because people their age work at the company.

As others were saying, I hope they do go somewhere with both of these points. It would be nice to see Tekkadan having to face the ripple effects of their actions and deal with them head-on.

The scene in the car was the strongest in the episode for me. Cookie and Cracker both tease Mika with how much better than him they've gotten at reading, which was one of the nicest little bits of characterization in S1. Then, when the car blows up, we they are all too aware of how messed up Mika is, and they already lost Biscuit so they won't let him go out of the car ready to kill or be killed.

I don't have a lot of faith in this because of the Sunrise 2nd Season Curse, but it would be nice if I was wrong. IBO was always strong conceptually and this season already shows hints of some interesting themes at work. The question is if they will be executed satisfactorily.

Pretty good first episode for the season. I'm curious to see what part Kudelia will play this season. Maybe breaking Mars away from the space yakuza mafia and the rest of the Earth nations.

I'm glad to see Mika took his final upgrade of last season of learning how swords work and applied it to better swing around blunt objects.

Also if the final episode doesn't end with either Raise Your Flag or that orphans song playing, which one depends on the tone of the ending, this show will be a failure.

Promising start. I liked the opening montage. I've never been a huge fan of the character designs in this show, but the mecha designs, and overall direction makes up for it. Looking forward to once again being agape at Mika's actions.

Really miss the original ending song, though. It was so good.

I think it's been mentioned that those are just big-rear end artillery cannons.

There was an artbook back in December that stated the Post Disaster timeline wouldn't have beam weapons. Now, that might have changed since, but I'm not going to assume they're going to be added without evidence beyond "this design has guns on its shoulders!"

The hip guns on the Gundam Flauros (that's that suit's name) are even more obviously kinetic weapons than the shoulder guns. You can see the ammo magazines in the rear shot. It's not the first time an IBO gun has had a pointed muzzle, either - the Grimgerde and Hyakuri both had 'em. I'm suspecting that the shoulder guns are the special ones, although they're not beam weapons. Coilguns, maybe? Those drum-like structures around them are interesting.

Also, the Gusion Rebake Full City apparently quad-wields rifles, which I am stupidly happy about.

The Vidar (the blue Gundam in the ED) and its pilot remain a mystery. The mask suggests the return of Gaelio, but he's wearing a Seven Stars uniform, and his suit is in McGillis's blue and is obviously high-tech and well-maintained. Might just be McGillis wearing the headgear for combat purposes rather than as a disguise - it might be some sort of pseudo-Alaya-Vijnana System.

The Grimgerde's rifle would have looked suspiciously beam-weaponesque without the huge drum magazine, now that you mention it. Still, I dunno, the Flauros' lower pair seem weirdly positioned for percussive firearms and also e-pacs are historically a thing. But again, if they keep beam weaponry out of the picture altogether then more power to 'em, no pun intended
