The psychologist Bob Altemeyer did a series of studies on personality traits common to conservatives, which are summed up under the variable right-wing authoritarianism. That article gives a good overview but Altemeyer's book is interesting too, and free to download. I don't think the basic message is that right-wingers are crazy or unstable, but the danger posed by people who love authority and reactionary social values is real enough to be worried.
