Yep. Tough luck, dream witch. :smith:

I'm still pretty interested in this premise, but whether or not I keep watching hinges on how I feel after ep 3. At the very least, it's gotten me to think about watching Madoka.

The first episode did some things I liked, but this one confirmed all the misgivings I had about this show. I went into this knowing it was going to be grim, as it makes no secret about that, but this episode's actual execution of that just felt so cynical, joyless, and like AnacondaHL pointed out in more detail, totally arbitrary. I guess I just don't see what the thrill is in watching suffering and misery for its own sake, which seems to be the direction this is taking.

(As an aside for anyone in this thread who hasn't seen Madoka yet, you really owe it to yourself to check it out! I put it off for a long, long time because I was under the impression it was some sort of mindlessly dark slaughterfest, and I couldn't have been more wrong there. It's basically a perfect show IMO.)

Yeah, arbitrary is the word I'd use. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure "suffering and misery for its own sake" is why they killed off Nerumin--she was the cutest and most sympathetic of the girls, so offing her was a bit of a gut punch. It was a blatant kick the dog moment. Like I said, I'll give this one more episode, but it really has to wow me for me to continue with it.

I thought the former. Of course, she hasn't yet been put in mortal danger, so it's an open question as to whether or not she could avoid her own peril.

Can magical strength hurt other magical girls though? Magical spells and weapons could easily be argued as being a different category altogether from just swinging normal objects a bit harder.

I thought the witch girl mentioned in ep. 2 that if they use their powers on other magical girls they would get hurt? It was during the flashback conversation with the ninja girl.

e: Yeah, it's around the 9-minute mark in episode 2.

Right- I get that. The question is what counts as "use of powers on other magical girls?".

I'll give you a better example. SnowWhite falls off of her radio tower. She presumably lands, unhurt. Top Speed, using her magical powers, flies Snow White up to the same height as the tower, and drops her. Is she injured upon landing, or not? Clearly, that's offensive use of Top Speed's powers, but I'd be hard pressed to say that one should cause damage while the other doesn't in most magic systems. What if she were flown to twice the height of the tower and dropped over a harder surface? Much more damage would be caused in the absence of invulnerability, but the system isn't described as being some sort of damage threshold, just "You get hurt by magical bullets".

I see what you're trying to say. Yeah, given your example, it's kinda confusing how that'd affect someone. Hopefully they explain it a bit in the next episode.

I can't believe I was about to drop this show. This episode was really good. I do kinda feel sorry for Ruler, but she brought it upon herself by pushing everyone on her side away.

I wonder when Snow White'll begin her descent. She and La Pucelle are still playing Cardcaptors while everyone else is playing Game of Thrones. :v:

That was a really good episode. I think it's good that this show has really managed to go beyond what a lot of people, myself included to an extent, thought it would be at first glance. I'm also kind of surprised how okay I was with La Pucelle dying. In the end, it was her stupid hubris, her stupid code of honor, and her stupid, stupid, pointless death.

Yeah, same. Of course, La Pucelle was always kind of a dead mahou walking.

She's also like an eight-year-old girl, for added scariness. The power of a magical girl with the mentality of a child...

Cranberry's characterization is definitely on the thin side. Not that anyone in the show is super fleshed out (the more interesting ones, like Ripple, are interesting mainly because some aspect of their personality is still somewhat ambiguous), but when you compare Cranberry to other characters of the same general archetype, like Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter, she seems a bit dull.

I wonder if Cranberry's even a person and not, like, an NPC that found her way into the real world.

Have some shirts that you'll never wear in public (unless you're strong and brave and a true magical girl)

Probably the biggest thing I like more about future volumes is that they have fewer terrible characters that you don't care about (like the Peaky Angels), and even the evil ones have more compelling/interesting motivations aside from just randomly being a huge rear end in a top hat. Especially Arc 2 (Volumes 2-3), which has a much better cast than Volume 2 in my opinion.

Cool, thanks!
