this episode was a mess. where in time did the calamity mary scene happen? it doesn't look like anyone left the room after she was announced as the loser, but then we have that calamity mary scene...

you realize that letterboxing the screen is a classic signifier of "flashback"?

i liked how this ep portrayed ruler as a pretty lovely leader when you think about it. she's completely entitled about her status: she calls herself a leader, and simply expects to be followed. and she specifically picks out weaklings and idiots to lead, no one who displays actual initiative or fortitude. well, except swim swim, who will either be completely passive or utterly ruthless. the ex-ruler team are in a weird spot, everyone will be extremely wary of them because no one likes backstabbers, but they also lack the offensive power to really be a threat

top speed and sister nana are natural leaders, someone who can actually stand with their peers, not just minions

oh cool, nana and winterprison's deal isnt a rehash of la pucelle's schtick, they're straight up gay married

and lmao that calamity mary can grind points by helping one side or the other in a yakuza gang war. also lmao at magicaloid accidentally helping out nana, who actually is gullible as hell. i think this show has really found its footing by making a bunch of weirdos bounce off one another

lol yeah it just keeps going, alright, theres nothing solid left to shoot, time to spread out some damage with acid and fire, also why dont we bury the miasma in sand and dump it in the sea? oh. it's still not enough. alice is brokenly strong, at this rate, the only way to get rid of her is if she runs out of candies

on that note, pve-focused snow white is completely out of her depth, she had better step up and start taking initiative before it gets annoying

Well, SW is theoretically quite powerful pvp. Level her power up to telepathy, and you can anticipate attacks or pull off ambushes or even give the edge in close combat. Look how far Cranberry gets with brute force punches and a few distraction spells.

Yeah, Cranberry was playing on NG+, so was so overlevelled that she could smash through La Pucelle's extendo-blade like it was no thang.

And the combat powers make sense if you remember the thing recruited people playing a cellphone game about fighting monsters.

Peeky Angels got some sympathy from me, the acting and look of horror and grief from the surviving sister was good. That death was brutal; though the net score is still "You're both murderous psychopaths who think this is a game."\

no loving sympathy, they attacked first, they had what was coming. they're not even kids, they can tell right from wrong

magicaloid is sorta like ripple in that she ran away from a hosed up family situation, except she responded not with immediate counteraggression and instead ran away to live as a hobo

she's more flippant and cynical than ripple and she's more willing to try a large range of activities to survive. and without a good role model, she becomes willing to murder. if ripple had fallen into the wrong crowd, she would be just as much a ruthless killer as any of them

so while i think this series can be cynical, it is also willing to display the full spectrum of the human condition, the good and bad, the violent and pacifist. a truly cynical show like drifters would make everyone a bad guy

also ruler was clearly never sympathetic, she just rocks up to her workplace and starts pushing some nutso darwinian rationalization and expected that she would float to the top of the chaos. she read some guide-to-leadership webpage and that fed into her huge ego, without actually understanding how to motivate people to follow your instructions. she could not rule through either love nor fear

swim swim betrayed ruler because ruler was a poo poo leader who couldn't use either love nor fear

also god drat it, who would have thought that phasing could be turned into a active defensive buff. that's terrifying. hardgore alice's regeneration is more powerful over the long run, but the regen doesn't help you attack when you've been lopped into little pieces

I'd suspected this for a while, but it seems that taking mastership of the system basically stops you from de-transforming. Cranberry didn't de-transform after Tama love-tapped her. And it would explain why Cranberry lives alone in a home-made cabin in the woods, it's hard to move around in the city when you look like an elf.

And lol that Swim-Swim was uninterested in taking mastership because she had killed all her would-be subjects.

Also it looks like abilities can be levelled up. Cranberry can scale her power from confusion spells up to pulverizing blasts of light and sound, Snow White's can theoretically be scaled up to perfect combat sense. Maybe, I'll read the LNs once the series is over.

actually that sounds completely in line with the human condition as its not like modern western societies have any idea what the gently caress they are doing vis a vis foreign societies, or even their own

it is an allegory for liberal technocratic society

felt a tad anticlimactic, like it ended up being a superhero origin story, except we never got to see snow white hunting down terrorists and being a badass. i mean, she finally learnt some sick martial arts moves in the epilogue, but that's it?

I've read arc 3, and I've enjoyed it a shitload more than arc 2. Arc 2 is a silly ungrounded rpg-world, while arc 3 is pure action-thriller. Arc 2 overuses the unreliable narrator character and starts killing them off way too quickly before they are adequately developed, while arc 3 only uses it only a few times and with a light touch. It does reuse a few earlier scenarios, like Grace's cannons blasting the poo poo out of a constantly regenerating Pam wing, or Pukin being a more more competent version of Ruler. The characters are somewhat less cliched, the relationship between Pfle and Shadow gale is pretty stereotypical, while the relationship between Grace and Funny Trick, or that between Rain Pou and Postarie, are somewhat complicated. I also enjoyed that Pam didn't job out against Sonia, but had to be outright backstabbed.

As for what the purpose of making more magical girls is? This is a story about bureaucratic overreach, the very purpose is to expand your influence. Any fuckups in your department, you shift the blame on a rival department. It's all turf wars and paranoia and deception. The villain of arc 3 was never a big deal, it's just that the threat-response alarms within various departments were sabotaged to go haywire, so everyone threw their best resources into the scenario and escalated until it blew up in everyone's faces.
