The death got me a little because while I was expecting the shoe to suddenly drop I wasn't expecting something as subtle yet sudden as something that's basically the killing curse from Harry Potter.

I like the character of Souta a lot. It strikes me as something genuinely inclusive about non-binary gender stuff, the show earns a lot of goodwill from me even if Souta probably gets it. :(

Huh, really didn't expect Ruler to be amoral in her desire to be a good Princess, or should we say "Prince" as written by Machiavelli.

Snow White's main power is that she can read minds for cries of help right? She doesn't have a particularly combat oriented kit. :ohdear:

La Pucelles tail being super expressive was nice.

I assume yes, basically as long as her fists have a +1 modifier on them which magical strength should provide.

As her her being stronger/faster, I'm assuming this is the case for all of them though; however if instead she's actually a good deal faster/stronger than anyone else because they have more unique and powerful abilities that could both work in her favor and make sense.

I can't tell if the explanation of Ruler's power was meant as a red herring or not. Seemed pretty clear that if she was going to die that way, it would be much later.

The impression I get is that Ruler used her power to make Swim Swim admire her, but didn't bother to do so with the other lackeys? Her power is only supposed to last as long as she's casting, but maybe projecting strong enough thoughts into someone leaves a lasting impression.

I think it's clear that Ruler bullied the Twins into following her through a show of force; which is why they're constantly bad mouthing her. Earthquake Paws could probably be intimidated by a scary looking rock.

Swims probably did admire her genuinely, I'm assuming admiration turned to envy with Dream Girl's prodding; magic would probably be the probable explanation given it seems rather sudden or people picked to be magical girls aren't too mentally healthy to begin with.

Like, Sayaka in Madoka Magica had a fairly well paced build up to her snapping, I didn't see this with Swims, so I am a little confused.

I feel sorry for Ruler Office Lady, clearly she was shat on by society at large and that chip on her shoulder was probably largely justified even if her performance in highschool gave her perhaps an unrealistic impression of obvious her self worth is.

Yeah Machiavelli 101 is to cripple the backstabbers asap because they'll just backstab you as soon as they feel like it.

Ruler's problem is its preferable to rule by fear than to be love, but you gotta avoid being hated while doing so. People don't mind fearing you if you're also competent and can bring home the goods.

I think its interesting in how quickly La Pucelle and Snow White both kind of lost their cool and their dignity once they realize that death was a very real possibility. Though La Pucelle had one last moment of trying to go out guns blazing, Snow White I thought would try to crawl behind those wooden boards.

Hahahahaa, as someone who played EVE this seems on the nose.

What other show has this sort of distinction between PvP and PvE and the strengths vs weaknesses of them? I believe SAO had two examples, one in the LN in which Klein's guild had PvP gear which helped them punch up above their weight class; and then Kirito took an otherwise useless PvE weapon and made it broken in PvP.

What other shows have this sort of dynamic?

Ripple still doing charity work and preferring evasion to direct confrontation makes a lot more sense now.

Also, The way she looks out for Ninja Girl now suddenly seems a hell of a lot more motherly in retrospect, she's basically been trying to help her out as best she can and keep her out of trouble.

I also generally like the juxtaposition of the stereotypical housewife being a bad rear end when Batman'ing around.

Peeky Angels got some sympathy from me, the acting and look of horror and grief from the surviving sister was good. That death was brutal; though the net score is still "You're both murderous psychopaths who think this is a game."

Poor Nana. She really in the end didn't realize just how bad things were.

I feel like if a little slower pacing to flesh out the characters more in ways that Don't Obviously Foreshadow Death Magicaloid would be way more interesting as a character; I don't really see hints that she was ever really trying to figure out what's up with her mind but imagine how baller it would be if it was her plot arc? Like Ainz Ool Gown from Overlord? "Why can't I feel emotions?" and it's all one tragic downwards spiral of pushing the limits of human decency to find the point that she finally feels something? Tragic because she isn't the one who designed her character to be that way.

Obviously this is bordering on head-cannon fanfiction territory but it seems like with her line before her death like a lost opportunity for a plot arc.

Basically I think in retrospect the show while the show is fun and I enjoy it; it would be I think it could be approaching Great territory if it had a little more Show and a little Less Tell.

Mainly I think I don't like Foreboding Foreshadowing Flashbacks; I feel like those could've been conveyed better but we'd need two-cours.

Swim-Swim is nearly as invulnerable as Alice in addition to her cold blooded murder of people.

Minael was pretty on point with the crazy faces and bloodlust.

And oh hey, we appear to have confirmed that Snow White can actually read minds for tactical advantage!

Alice reminds me now a bit of Stain from My Hero Academia; I think it would be wonderful for the melodrama if she's like Swim-Swim in that she also just wishes to coldly murder anyone who doesn't live up to her ideal of being a magical girl.

e: I think the fight between Ripple and Mary was generally pretty good and what I want from fight scenes in general; a solid grounding in the "physics" of a fight enhanced by their abilities; so you see the judo throws, trips, punches, MMA take downs, and that is very solid with the creative usage of their powers being the cherry on top to create spectacle.

The fight between Swim-Swim and Ripple only had about half the elements of a solid fight; the usage of powers were great, but I felt the choreography must've ran out of budget at this point; not that it's fair to judge all fights by Ufotable's standards but I really did expect more from the glaive-on-katana action than what we got that was almost static stills.

I hope we get some backstory on Swim Swim soon, and why she's such a horrid little monster. I was willing to reserve some sympathy for her, because maybe she comes from a broken home and that's why she's so cold-blooded, but then she stabbed a pregnant woman.

On one hand, I don't think Swim-swim exactly knew; but on the other hand, I think we can safely say she wouldn't care. I really do wanna see what's her deal, I wanna know the thought process running through her head that made her go from betraying Ruler whom she apparently admired to ruthlessly killing her enemies.

That's what I was expecting would happen when Ripple tossed all of that broken glass at Mary, or at least that some of it would get in her eyes.

that's way smarter than what happened this episode, but by the description of her own powers ripple's projectiles should phase through or avoid any obstacle until they hit calamity mary. yeah, that's broken, but some of these powers are obv meant to be broken (like swim swims, which just became more broken this episode for some bullshit reason).

just mad her true aim ability is really just enhanced accuracy. also, there were numerous glaring points in this episode where ripple could've thrown a projectile and killed mary it's not funny. for example when mary's gun was knocked upward, she was completely open and a dagger to her throat would've worked better than lunging at her :argh:

Like with martial arts we just kinda have to assume that openings we may think exist may not have actually existed in the minds of the characters, nor there muscle memory capable of reacting to it. For example it may have been smarter to attack her throat with her dagger, but to close the distance probably still needed a dash/lunge, and she simply lacked the reflexes to manage anything else in the time frame.

As for the last episode what was the deal with the rabbits foot? Did it cause Ripple to come back or was that used to read Fav's mind? If the latter does that assume that Ripple would be convinced not to cut the master's device? She seemed like she would have done it anyway.

The Rabbits foot lets you have a Mulligan basically, in this case it probably reacted to Snow Whites desire to save at least one of the magical girls and saved Ripple by healing her enough to avoid death from losing an arm + Exhaustion. Snow White's ability is Telepathy (Slightly nerfed version where it only works on people in "Distress" which can still be fairly useful in combat), so she was hearing Fav the whole time and warned Ripple. We only heard Fav's side of things after Ripple got up; presumably Snow White in a rather fun character moment of pure awesomeness was hearing Fav's thoughts of concern about the well bring for his Terminal but we the audience was hearing it because it made for a more interesting scene. "I can still hear you."

Regarding Snow White (minor but somewhat predictable spoilers about her power) her ability ends up covering almost all mind-reading, with the exception of people who are constantly worry-free and express no distress (who don't practically exist under normal circumstances). For anyone on the fence about reading the LNs, I recommend them - everything post-Volume 1 is considerably better than Volume 1 in my opinion, particularly in terms of being less predictable (from what I can tell there's no way to really predict who lives and who dies, especially in Arc 4).
