Solving mysteries in
Bb, F and D.

The first episode did some things I liked, but this one confirmed all the misgivings I had about this show. I went into this knowing it was going to be grim, as it makes no secret about that, but this episode's actual execution of that just felt so cynical, joyless, and like AnacondaHL pointed out in more detail, totally arbitrary. I guess I just don't see what the thrill is in watching suffering and misery for its own sake, which seems to be the direction this is taking.

(As an aside for anyone in this thread who hasn't seen Madoka yet, you really owe it to yourself to check it out! I put it off for a long, long time because I was under the impression it was some sort of mindlessly dark slaughterfest, and I couldn't have been more wrong there. It's basically a perfect show IMO.)

Something about Yuuki Yuuna hit me harder than Madoka did, but I realize that I'm in a small, small minority here.

I posted this in the season thread, but right now it'll be interesting to see how The magical girls discover that the decommissioned ones die, since they tend to hide their secret identities, and that would seem to be necessary to start the deathmatch

My guess is that This is only the first phase of the project, they're going to knock off all 8 "extra city girls" in the next episode or two, and then the deathmatch will commence when Fav later decides that he wants there to only be one in the country or world or something similar.

Huh...

So they put the whole "dead" thing right into the open like that, huh? I thought it would have been more interesting to see them work it out over a couple episodes, but I guess they're getting right to the point. That's not a bad thing. What surprises me is that they also didn't waste any time with any sort of build-up to the first open murder plot, like "OK, vassals, give me all your candies and I will distribute them evenly to ensure that none of us dies this week."

I forget, was her power being able to hear people in need? Or was it to listen the the desires and intentions of those around her?

I thought the former. Of course, she hasn't yet been put in mortal danger, so it's an open question as to whether or not she could avoid her own peril.

Command Ant posted:

She's also magically strong.

That doesn't mean she's a good fighter, of course.

Can magical strength hurt other magical girls though? Magical spells and weapons could easily be argued as being a different category altogether from just swinging normal objects a bit harder.

I thought the witch girl mentioned in ep. 2 that if they use their powers on other magical girls they would get hurt? It was during the flashback conversation with the ninja girl.

e: Yeah, it's around the 9-minute mark in episode 2.

Right- I get that. The question is what counts as "use of powers on other magical girls?".

I'll give you a better example. SnowWhite falls off of her radio tower. She presumably lands, unhurt. Top Speed, using her magical powers, flies Snow White up to the same height as the tower, and drops her. Is she injured upon landing, or not? Clearly, that's offensive use of Top Speed's powers, but I'd be hard pressed to say that one should cause damage while the other doesn't in most magic systems. What if she were flown to twice the height of the tower and dropped over a harder surface? Much more damage would be caused in the absence of invulnerability, but the system isn't described as being some sort of damage threshold, just "You get hurt by magical bullets".

No, you're right... Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku

Still... I wish that there critique was a bit deeper than just "garbage show".

If it turns out that the process of choosing a magical girl wasn't random, I wouldn't be surprised if Fav thought it would be funny to pick someone who was just messing around on her friend's phone.

I thought her friend was letting her live in the apartment in exchange for her friend grinding levels out on the phone game, since she wouldn't be old enough to find paid work otherwise. Slightly different than "friend" or "messing around", she was being compensated or extorted.

This is wonderful.

In other news- how are alice and swim-chan going to bite it? Alice's healing powers suggest that she might be susceptible to some manner of chemical or nuclear change at the molecular level? Are you just going to have to attack swimswim's hands, since if she liquifies those she loses her weapon and is no longer a threat? Does it even work that way? If it did, wouldn't she have come out of swim-mode naked, since she would have swam through her own clothing?

Poor Nana. Top Speed (RIP) got her moment of glory, Nana just got misery

If she turns out to not actually be dead I'll flip my poo poo.

She's just been involved in a lengthy appeals process with FavCorp over whether, in fact, helping resolve peoples' personality flaws through their dreams qualifies as helping them in real life, and whether she should have gotten candies during deathmatch week 1.

EDIT: All the while being mourned, cremated, buried, etc.

I can't say I'm enjoying this show. I will watch it because I want to know the story, but there's increasingly few moments I really enjoy sitting through.

I'm still enjoying it, I just wish that either the anime respected the author's reported creativity better (The thing involving throwing the window pane with perfect throw in the Ripple/Topspeed vs. Calamity Mary fight was a really cool idea, but the anime diluted it to nearly nothing) or that the author was a bit more creative himself, generally, about tactical uses of powers.

"I've got a great idea- we'll go and introduce DLC weapons, because I've run out of ideas on how these guys can use their powers offensively!" is a bit of a copout, and the premise deserves better.

My final opinion of the show is going to depend nearly entirely on how the characters take down SwimSwim and Alice, because it's obviously going to come down to "Oh yeah, we were going to cull it down to just one magical girl from the beginning, pyon" in the end.

Interesting question will be whether the Magical World Archmages or whatever have the ability to bring back La Pucelle because of Cranberry's interference in the selection process.

The others were engaged in battles with other magical girls, but Cranberry just went out for a fight with Snow White, escalated the situation to the point that it was kill-or-be-killed, and coldheartedly destroyed him. That might be a step too far when it's inevitably discovered.

EDIT: Just realized might be nice to spoil-tag this since it's today's episode.

The new Wixoss (I might watch the old one next season, since there's not too much that intrigues me) has been hitting some of the "Not Madoka" tones pretty well for me, for what it's worth. The setting is completely different, but the stakes are similar.

I liked this show well enough that I'll probably try to read the LNs. What I've seen from glancing at the spoiler tagged sections intrigues me.
