I don't think Kaine is doing a good job (although he's improved as he's gone on) but he keeps bringing it back to "I can't believe the governor can defend that.". Pence isn't responding but the narrative could end up "Pence ignores Trump's comments."

Yeah, Pence might win this because hes performed generally better than Kaine but he's actively avoided defending anything about Trump so it shouldn't help him any. Like, the guy not running is "winning".

Pence has been really mean to Russia.

Pence has generally done a good job deflecting and lying convincingly but this "boy you prepared well" attack he keeps going back to is just weird. Its like the Trump Campaign took "outsider" and advanced it to "it's good to be an amateur".

"Two versions of the truth on display." - Brian Williams Maddow thinks everyone sucked and no one said "an intelligible word" for the first half. Says in the second half Pence made the attacks Trump was supposed to last week.

Chris Matthews says this was "illuminating" and Pence is the frontrunner for 2020. I don't care to Chris Matthews.

MadJackal posted:Pence did everything Trump should have done. The nation is in trouble if Pence is runs the same racist, reality-denying bullshit campaign in 2020, because all it takes for unhinged, bigoted beliefs to look sane is confidence and poise like Pence showed tonight. I think it's silly to put that much emphasis on that performance. Kaine was bad and spent the entire debate attacking Trump. We got no indication what Pence would do against a smart debator like Hillary who called him on his poo poo. Kaine let him get away with his lies and vamping because he was too focused on trying to make him answer for Trump. That wouldn't have happened if they were the primary candidates.

I'm watching bottom of the ninth tied playoff baseball now because COME ON! Could there be a greater juxtaposition? I guess overtime hockey and a state Senate debate on public access?

Van Jones has the biggest poo poo eating grin on his face. Megyn Kelly keeps taking down Trump people. Somehow i didn't expect that to be the debate reaction.

Despera posted:That was really weird of pence to bring up Putin so much I don't know that Pence was deliberately setting himself up for 2020 like pundits are saying but at some point of that debate (or maybe before) he clearly made the decision that he was playing for himself and didn't give a poo poo what Trump has said. Ironically I think it hurts this 2020 thing because tomorrow the story is "Pence lied".

Azathoth posted:He spent his entire term as governor loving up, publicly and repeatedly, and was essentially a coin-flip to win re-election in a solid red state. Based on that, I honestly wasn't expecting him to play the VP nomination so well after doing so badly as governor, but he's on a path to come out of this election ahead, regardless of whether he becomes VP. Pence did well enough that he threw himself into the 2020 conversation with Cruz and Rubio and Kasich or whoever. But he's gonna have to get through four years and a primary slog and I just don't think this was much of a show since he was never attacked for his own stuff and will have to deal with the fallout of him lying about all the easily provable trump stuff this week. His best hope is Trump makes a fool of himself tomorrow and quickly changes the subject so he can just hide out the next month and all people remember is that he "won" 90 minutes.

Pick posted:I always just assumed that Mike Pence was a sacrificial lamb. If you got any real scrutiny, people would absolutely despise him. Hes a "principled" conservative who could give Trump backing with the NeverTrumpers and had no clear political future because he hosed things up recently so he had nothing to lose. Maybe he comes out of this a 2020 contender and maybe he comes out roadkill, but he was hosed anyway if he didn't jump on the Trump Train. Which is the place must people in the Trump Campaign were.
