Pence looks like he would rather be literally anywhere else right now.

Kaine is at his best when he's articulating policy and humanizing it. He really needs to quit with the interruptions, though, or at least make them better.

(Though if anyone deserves to be talked over and disrespected, it's Pence, because gently caress that guy.)

I won the debate, because it's over and I'm still alive.

In a weird (and much lower-magnitude) way, Kaine's flaw tonight was the same as Trump's flaw last Monday. He was too easy to bait, and Pence used that to his advantage more than once. (Though Pence lost his own cool a few times, and it hurt him worse when he did). Pence's complete inability to defend Trump was pretty visible, though.

Kaine was absolutely better at articulating policy, though. And yeah, I wish he'd taken the opportunity to attack Pence on all the anti-woman and anti-LGBT poo poo he did in Indiana, though I'd guess by that point he knew that his attacks weren't really helping him and he decided (probably too late) that the high road was a better idea.

I will be really surprised if there aren't a few more "look, guys, don't tell Donald, but it's okay, Pence is going to be the real president, and did you see how well he did?" comments from the Republicans between now and the election. (And I sincerely hope there are, because, even if that's his actual plan, saying it would utterly infuriate Trump.)

Hahaha, thank you Windows 10 for suggesting that I watch the Twitter livestream of the debate.

Just now.

After it's over.

The first 2/3rds of the debate were approximately:

Kaine: How can you defend these horrible things that Donald Trump said?

Pence: Trump? I don't know anyone named Trump, do any of you guys know what he's talking about? Now, about tax cuts...

You know, as I think about it more... I don't really believe in 11th dimensional judo narratives or whatever, but I can't help but think that "losing" the debate in order to get Pence to show the world just how slimy and insincere he really is might have figured into plans a little.

At the very least, this is what the Clinton campaign should be pushing, that maybe Kaine is bumbling, but he's sincere, where Pence is a slick talking lying bully who "won" by showing us all what he is.

We kind of all got used to Uncle Joe but the VP isn't generally somebody's rabid dog that they sic on people, usually the VP is somebody popular but non-threatening that won't distract from the top of your ticket. Cheney and Biden were both unusual picks. Gore and Quayle were much more status quo. Kaine is a Gore.

Besides, while I do think Pence won the debate as an isolated event, this is not going to be seen in the long run as a victory for the Trump campaign. Pence is on record repeatedly denying that Trump said things he is also on record as having said, and as literally saying that Trump isn't a very good politician. The world now knows exactly what sort of person Mike Pence is.

While I wish Kaine had gone after Pence on his own horrible policies, let's be realistic; Pence would have lied through his teeth about that too, and probably rather more successfully than he did about Trump.

Now, whether any of this was some kind of master genius plan on Kaine's part or not is an open question. I kind of suspect not. Kaine really came across to me as a bit flustered, a bit bumbling, but genuinely sincere about what he believed (and he was absolutely at his best when he was talking about what the Clinton administration wants to accomplish).

But eleven-dimensional chess or happy accident, I don't really care. I'll take it.

Pence came off badly: no answers and some of the most blatant question dodging ever. And what was up with him trying to be Reagan? A few of his answers last night came off as him trying to pull that off but so badly it made him look tired and sad.

Oh god, Pence's "There he goes again" fell so flat I genuinely felt sorry for him.

(It passed very quickly).
