Many popular anime, such as A Certain Magical Index, Sword Art Online, Konosuba!, and Re:Zero, were adapted from light novel sources.

Could've at least included a KonoSuba link!!!

Gifting this Wonderful World with Blessings!
Kazuma, just an ordinary teenage boy, is run over by a truck while trying to save a girl's life. He meets a goddess in the afterlife, who asks him to help save another world. Kazuma accepts, and the goddess follows him to this new (video game like!) world. Starting off as an ordinary adventurer, Kazuma assembles a party of beauties and begins his quest to save the world from the Demon Lord!

Hahahahahahaha just kidding, that's not what happens at all. Konosuba is the story of two douchebags meeting, screwing each other over, and then attracting two weirdoes into one dysfunctional as hell party who somehow manage to save the day in spite of themselves. It is the epitome of a story not taking itself seriously, and is overall a complete blast to read. Or watch, since it got a very nice anime!

I'm actually kinda mixed on recommending this as a starter, because it is first and foremost a parody of the entire Reincarnated Into A Game genre. It is absolutely an excellent comedy on its own, with one of the best casts I have ever seen and a tight narrative (if something is mentioned, no matter how minor, it's probably going to come up later!), but I kinda feel like it's even better after you've flipped through a few other stories of its ilk first.

KonoSuba has gotten successful enough to launch some spin-off series too. Gifting this Wonderful World with Explosions! covers fan favorite Megumin's adventures prior to her joining the party, and Consulting with this Masked Devil! is a one-off focusing on various side characters (and Aqua). Overall I'd heavily recommend Masked Devil, but Explosions falls flat for the first three volumes because it turns out removing 75% of the main cast kinda neuters the humor. The fourth volume is very good though!

I finally decided to just cut to the chase and skim through the rest of Sevens in Japanese, and can pretty confidently say at this point that it's... a 7/10.

The story's biggest problem is Celes. She never rises above being the most generic "humanity is awful" antagonist imaginable, and her motivation is extraordinarily weak: she started hating everyone because they paid more attention to Lyle than her. Like seriously, that's it. She pretty much just exists in the background for 17/18 volumes, and even though the story tries to build her up as this horrifying monster I just didn't give a poo poo. Lyle's confrontation with his father was far more enthralling in my opinion. And hell, I think even the author realizes how nothing Celes was, because she's unceremoniously defeated a third of the way through the final battle so Agrissa can come out.

That ties into my other problem: the finale was weak. It's very cathartic, since all of the Ancestors and other important side characters come back and get to do things again, but the end result is that Agrissa comes off as kinda pathetic. Like there's this long bit where Lyle reveals his final skill (Sevens, because title drop), and then she literally just floats there and listens to several long conversations. She's not even the real final boss: that ends up being Novem. And I'll admit that fight was funny because it's basically an incredibly overdramatic lovers spat, but it only served to make the finale feel even less tense.

There's a nice assortment of bonus chapters that take place after the end (most shining a spotlight on one particular girl), and even a sorta teaser that takes place far in the future. They were better than volume 18 in my opinion, which to me pretty much means that Sevens was better at being romantic comedy than a drama. Though I was really disappointed that the Ancestors Biographies only went up to the Fifth, and that there was never a proper discussion of Lyle's skills because I still have no idea what the gently caress Sevens was supposed to do (It forcefully turned him into mr lyle? It summoned the spirits of the Ancestors? It gave him the power of Septem?).

Sevens is just real slow paced. Six volumes before the plot really starts.

I did mention that it's basically the most vanilla story though!

And all I have to say is jesus gently caress this takes forever.

Sevens, because why not.

I'm also gearing up to start seriously tackling Konosuba, which is much easier to work with because Amazon offers it as an ebook.

It's just generic patrilineal rule like you'd expect from a quasi-medieval era. Sevens in general really likes the idea of girls being way scarier than guys, so I wouldn't call it sexist, but as I've said many times before Sevens is not something you should look to as being particularly innovative.

But if "why should I care that the MC has lost his right to be head" was the question you asked upon reading about a kid getting his rear end kicked by his clearly unstable sister in front of his unfeeling parents and house, I don't think Sevens is the story for you.

Fair point about why we should care about him. I'm more bothered by the way one of the past family heads talked about charismatic female "monsters" like Celes and Agrissa, but of course he doesn't have an objective viewpoint. Mostly I'm wondering to what extent his attitude ends up being portrayed as correct.

You could literally replace Celes and Agrissa's characters with any old generic evil final boss. They're really flat characters, but it's not a statement on women. Hell, I think almost every other female character ends up much more interesting than them.

Actually that spoiler was one of the weakest part of Sevens, and half the reason I'm bothering with the LNs is to see if the author fixes that.

If you want an idea of how Sevens treats women, there's an alternate chapter 3 that introduces the ancestors' wives. They are all pretty drat good, and if they were actually in the story Lyle would've defeated Celes by like volume 2.

Well you see, there are a bunch of studios whose job is to make an anime. They can't go "lol this stuff is awful, we're not going to make anything this season" for the same reason you can't just arbitrarily decide to take a season off of work.

Oh is that what you meant?

No, 90% of LN anime are greenlit by the company that publishes the LN in the first place. They're just big old advertisements, they don't need to make a profit so long as they increase sales of the book.

The terrible secret to professional translators is that the vast majority of them aren't that much better than fan translators.

They just have competent proofreaders and editors.

I remember Methods of Rationality.

I remember getting to like the second chapter where Harry starts lecturing Hermione's parents about how they're such awful people and then 180ing out of there.

Also I can't believe this thread has hit a new low and started discussing fanfiction. :v:

Well in that case, can I say that I'm really loving sick of the entire concept of "*insert generic shonen hero* is arbitrarily ~BETRAYED~ by his so-called friends and proceeds to gently caress off and train and become a Generic Badass"?

It's everywhere in fanfiction, christ.

EDIT: Also don't even get me started on how so many people seem to think the more :words: the better.

the only real difference is that the fanfiction is mostly written by women rather than men

It depends on the subject material. It tends to be really obvious as to whether what you're reading was written by a teenage girl or a teenage boy.

Like if you want to experience the deepest hells of the internet, go check up Infinite Stratos or some other harem anime fanfiction. More OCs than a mere mortal could ever possibly imagine.

Well I'm glad Konosuba is killing it because it deserves it.

More LNs should follow its example and give the MC an actual personality. The Megumin spinoff was torture because the story just wasn't the same without Kazuma and Aqua spicing things up.

This is the issue I had with Sevens; I liked the premise and I really liked his ancestors, but I couldn't deal with the protagonist's giant harem of women who think he's awesome.

Did we read the same thing because most of the main girls think he's pretty loving dumb. :v:

One of the reasons I even like reading Sevens is because it actually approaches the concept of harems from the perspective of the girls too. Not exactly amazingly mind you (I say main girls because there are totally are a few side girls who don't have much characterization since they came in late), but enough that I would consider it a plus.

I dropped It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated into the World of a Yandere Otome Game a while back because it seemed like it was going to be pretty typical, but upon checking it on a whim it actually went somewhere. Also it's nearly done, though with the translation speed I woudn't expect it to actually finish anytime soon.

I think my favorite part about Konosuba is how silly the climaxes sound out of context.

In this volume, Kazuma gets serious and drives a casino into bankruptcy.
