I let myself fall really behind on ISSTH. The tipping point was when Meng Hao was gloating to the sea gods or whatever about how much trouble they'd be in if he died because of his clan and all the forces supporting him. Hasn't he killed tons of people during or immediately after identical speeches?

Yeah he's been powering up really fast and killing lots of people since then. I think ISSTH is only around 1500 chapters so I think the author is going to have him blazing through the Ancient Realm and Dao Lord stages so he can seal the heavens or whatever.

I started reading ISSTH after liking Way of Choices and while it was entertaining at first i'm at like chapter 655~ and I'm pretty tired of Meng Hao at this point. He's such a douche, but literally everyone ever gives him their most special treasures ever because of dumb luck. He pretty much treats everyone else like garbage and despite talking up repaying kindnesses and will gladly take all the powerful poo poo from someone and then will waffle about even saving their lives in return unless they bribe him even more. The only people he actually treated well were the Crow Divinity Tribe but they literally worship him as a god and gave him a billion powerups, so. I much more prefer the more empathetic lead in Way of Choices.

If you haven't read many of these wuxia/xianxia web novels and are just comparing Chen Changsheng to Meng Hao then it will come off that way. Meng Hao is relatively moral for the genre. Meng Hao does treat his close friends very well if you look at all of the original Reliance Sect disciples, Pill Demon, his family, Chu Yuyan, and other people he actually cares about. Anyone outside of that group is going to have to pay for his help if they get it at all. His big thing is he likes conning people. ISSTH goes through cycles of cons, power ups, and battles. I typically enjoy the cons and the power ups (even if they're a bit contrived, I love the reaction shots like when he goes through the Fang Clan gate) but don't really enjoy the battles all that much especially because they can take forever. The overarching world is pretty cool and I still want to learn all about the mountain and sea realm, the ancient wars, Lord Li, etc but I'm currently enjoying Way of Choices a bit more.

Chen Changsheng is by far the most moral/caring/relatable character in any of the web novels I've read. I just find the world of Way of Choices to be more interesting than ISSTH. Way of Choices has a decent amount of fun political stuff that just doesn't exist in ISSTH and the writing style is very cool. Reminds me of Dune (in some ways obviously, not overall quality) which is one of my favorite books.

Way of Choices has got to be the best written web novel I've ever come across. Every character feels like they have their own agency and goals, most of them are even likable. There was a lot of build up recently and drat was this not satisfying,

'Qiushan Jun looked at the mountains and casually said, "And then…naturally, the disciples of Mount Li raise their swords to confront the enemy."

Xiao Songgong's complexion grew abnormally unsightly. He coldly shouted, "Just what are you doing! Did you not hear your master admit that Qi Jian's mother is a Demon Princess!?"

Qiushan Jun raised his sword and looked at Xiao Songgong and those powerful enemies. He asked, "And so what?"'

Oh man is the Su Li arc almost over? The one after it is definitely the best up to its point. poo poo gets real yo. Haven't read much after it cus I burnt out on reading the awful machine translation so I'm excited.

It seems like it's getting close but I really don't know. I didn't particularly love this arc but I feel Chen Changsheng developed quite a bit traveling with Su Li. I bet it will read much better as one cohesive arc on a re-read of the story. My favorite parts were either the interactions between Su Li and the demons or what I quoted above.

I also love the little insights into the future that are given such as Chen Changsheng and Nanke battling many times in the future and how Chen Changsheng's understanding of the intellectual sword/star domains will have major impacts.

ISSTH has jumped the shark. I'll still read it because there are only about 200 chapters left but these most recent developments are asinine.

The stuff with the Devil and God countries, the parrot and meat jelly, Shui Dongliu, etc. was all built up well enough that I cared and was interested but I'm not sure why that last arc (with a different conclusion) wasn't the finale. I assume it's to further tie all of the author's different worlds and stories together but he seems to have written himself into a strange and bad place.

On the positive side Way of Choices continues to own super hard. I wish I had found that story in a couple of years when the story will be complete and the majority of the translation was done. Almost looked up courses on how to learn Chinese but then I realized I would never follow through.

remember, she had disguised her appearance. so it is entirely possible that when they meet again, chen changsheng won't even recognize her. plus, you know, every single rear end in a top hat authority figure wants them to fight and they probably can't get out of it.

He won't recognize her necessarily but she realized (at least I hope so otherwise her credibility as a genius will be called into question) when Su Li and the Holy Maiden discussed the umbrella and the sword pool. They will obviously fight and then we will get a poignant scene where she reveals who she is when she is defeated and/or lets him win or something similar.

Yeah this whole sequence just feels forced and boring. Jin Yunshan understanding Meng Hao's greed has been the only entertaining part. I really thought we were going to end with the God, Devil, and Immortal realms fighting and that would be the end of it essentially. Now we have the Vast Expanse and the Vast Expanse Society which exists outside of the Vast Expanse and All-Heaven. Very little of this was ever hinted at so I feel like it is just the author trying to end the story tying together his other web novels and it has made me far less interested.

Yeah ISSTH is full on revenge porn right now. At least Meng Hao (and the author?) seems to understand that he's been driven insane and he doesn't seem to be deriving any joy from the process. But yeah full on genocide plus eternal torment with no chance for either reincarnation or just permanent death.

I guess we have another 50 chapters of him killing the Immortal and God worlds and then maybe we get the conclusion and learn more about Allheaven and all that jazz. Or more likely the transcendent cultivators from the Immortal and God world will show up and keep him from massacring their homelands or whatever. Ultimately though I want to finish the story and learn more about the world. I believe A Will Eternal is also set in the same universe. Assuming Meng Hao stays the demon then God, Devil, Demon, and the new guy from A Will Eternal could end up being the Immortal?

I wish I hadn't found ZTJ until it was completed. It's already around 1500 and ongoing if novel updates is to be believed. It's easily the best web novel I've ever read. Early(ish) fun ISSTH is close but I haven't found anything else that compares to ZTJ. I'm down to two web novels now, ZTJ and Sovereign of the Three Realms. I gave up on actively following World of Cultivation and Emperor's Domination a while ago. I'm sure I'll go back and catch up/finish them at some point though.

Su Li rules. I like that just his letters were enough to put everyone back in their places after they thought they could gently caress around because he was gone. I hope he shows back up in the novel later on when Chen Changsheng and the rest of the younger group are a little closer to his level. I suppose Chen Changsheng needs to surpass him by the time he's 20 to survive so it theoretically isn't that far away.

So after everyone ragged on The King's Avatar I decided to check it out. It's okay. They explained the concept of why they drove the player out sufficiently well enough by around the 600th chapter that I'm okay with the whole concept. I basically skip any of the long fighting sequences though, especially when it's the teams that aren't the main characters.

I would be curious to see someone map out all of the classes, skills, stats, equipment, etc. to see how consistent the other was. It feels like they've done a good job of living within their own internal logic but I'm skimming most of the fighting anyway so who knows.

Care to elaborate? I tried reading the WN but I just couldn't get very far into it and I'm honestly curious if there's more to it because "his entire team and management are a bunch of stereotypical evil dicks" really kind of soured me on the concept.

The main character is the greatest and most famous professional player of Glory (an MMO) but he actively refused to ever be seen in public. The professional teams make tons of money from advertising and endorsement deals but since the main character refused to be involved in anything public the owner soured on the main character since the owner was losing lots of money. The owner forced the main character to retire because he was worried about the fans supporting whatever team the main character ended up and also about the backlash if the fans knew he fired or traded him. After retiring the main character has to sit out a year before he can join a new team. Professional players (in this story) also typically have a short shelf life as their hand speed decreases as they get old (mid 20s) and the main character was already old for a professional (again mid 20s) so the owner figured his career would be over after the one year restriction.

Argas posted:

Makes sense. The main new thing is the owner's motive (beyond being a dick). Still kind of hurts the story out of the gate because it's just such a stereotypical "Those jerks wronged the MC! How dare they"

They actually address this as well. The MC still loves the team and even though he knew what was going on and could have prevented it he chose to sacrifice himself for the future of the team. He didn't hold a grudge or try to screw them over but only responds when the jackass player(s) try to mess with him. It isn't 100% explicit for a while but they imply it when another captain allows his successor rookie teammate to beat him (with only the MC and one other character knowing) in a public match to build the rookie's confidence.

I kept with Overgeared and I agree with most people's assessment but the most recent chapters were pretty funny. A bunch of guilds team up to attack the main character's city while they think it's defenseless but there are four extremely strong characters currently working as farmers that the guilds did not know about.

Way of Choices is much more about the relationships between the characters, the politics between the different human factions, relations with the demi-humans, and war with the demons, etc. Cultivation is intrinsic to the world and the story but I think this story would hold up even if you removed all the cultivation and other fantastic elements. It would lose (by removing the fantastic elements) the decades/century long plots/relationships but you could drop this story into a warring states type time period and it would be fine. The different races just become different human nations and it would all pretty much work out A-Okay.

So with Ze Tian Ji/Way of Choices ending I'm in need of some new titles to check out. I tend to have poor taste in the web novels I read and seem to have ended up in the "overpowered/all knowing" series of titles. I'm currently reading:
  • The King's Avatar
  • Sovereign of the Three Realms
  • Emperor's Domination
  • Overgeared

Previously I've enjoyed ISSTH and ZTJ, I read Coiling Dragon and it was okay. I tried a couple of other titles from the Coiling Dragon guy but couldn't get into them. I failed to complete Tales of Demons and Gods (mostly because of release schedule and the jump in scope of the story which I found aggravating) and also World of Cultivation (which I heard ended poorly anyway).

Anyone reading The Path Toward Heaven I assume Liu Ada was aghast because Jing Jiu can place his soul into the First Child Sword as well? So he essentially can have two sword bodies? I assume that’s the sword he’s preparing for his brother but who knows.

I am starting to like this as much as Way of Choices. It’s smaller in scope in some ways but I like the brother vs. brother aspect even though they both view Green Mountain as theirs. Someone in the story summed it up that even opposing each other when they interact and scheme they’ve still wreaked havoc on the Center Sect, killing the old dragon and hurting the unicorn.
