quote:

The show's story revolves around Yuuri Katsuki, who carried all of Japan's hopes on his shoulders to win at the Grand Prix Finale ice skating competition, but suffered a crushing defeat. He returns home to Kyushu and half feels like he wants to retire, and half feels like he wants to continue ice skating. With those mixed feelings swirling inside him, he confines himself inside his parents house. Suddenly the five-time consecutive world championship ice skater Viktor Nikiforov appears before him, and along with him is Yuri Plisetsky, a young Russian figure skater who is already defeating his seniors. Viktor and both Yuris take up the challenge on an unprecedented Gran Prix series. Source: ANN

Boys love isn't my bag, but I hope this show is good and that the boys kiss because a big, lavishly animated, openly Yaoi thing seems like it could quietly be a Big Deal.

I doubt it since Free! isn't BL despite the ongoing jokes around the series.

I like how fast this show moves, but there was one important thing that I missed: the three kids who pop up while Yuri is trying to confess to his childhood friend are _her_ kids, she's married to guy who used to bully him. Yuri's got issues lol.

I missed this part. welp, he tried :smith:

Edit: As far as the show doubling down on the gay romance or having it remain subtextual or even copping out, I'm tentatively optimistic so far but I'm also not gonna be surprised if it ultimately goes nowhere and remains "just" fanservice. I'm gonna be super disappointed if that happens, though.

Agreed, I'm jaded after seeing a good number of anime just back away after a few episodes or go in a strange direction before the ending. I'll reserve my judgement after I've seen the entire season and not until then. Also surprised Yurio returned so quickly to Russia and I wonder if this means we'll see how everyone else is training in the meantime.

People's personal experiences are different and I can understand how Victor's on screen disregard of personal space can feel dangerously off to some people. To me it seems clear that their intimacy is building off of stuff we don't see on camera, but I can see that other perspective.

Otherwise anime is pretty melodramatic...

True and I can't help to feel like Yuri becoming really attached to Viktor over the span of a few months. Yes, I know it's his idol and all who came to Japan to help him win. Also I hope there's less focus on Will They or Won't They? and more on how Yuri's personal development and his feelings towards ice skating.

it's hosed up that i'm too cynical to think they actually kissed. really liked the dynamic this episode, where yuri shifted into having the upper hand hard. it's nice to see viktor feel off his game for a little bit and makes him way more relatable/likable.

:same: Also more Viktor scenes where he realized he messed up and apologized to Yuri. As much as I like Viktor being perfect at everything it gets a bit tiring and unrelatable.

Finally I can see my favorite ice skater back next episode. I'm hyped to see how much Yurio has grown since his Japan trip.

So far we've seen "VIctor is dying," "Victor is using Yuri," and "Victor is going leave Yuri."
Now we get "Victor is going to go away for ??? reason." Are people blind to the tone of the show?

I still think Viktor is leaving Yuri because he needs to find his own motivation for ice skating. Also, Viktor has to go back to Russia eventually and decide if he wants to retire or not.

Relatedly, how the heck can I as a Brit buy any of the official merch? I've subbed to Crunchyroll but that seems like the best I can do right now. I'd happily buy some stuff or dvds or the CD but I'm utterly clueless how to it or where to go :(

There's quite a lot of anime merch importers like Otaku Mode/CDJapan but be sure to order early since pre-order goes fast esp for a popular series. You can buy blu-ray sets from Amazon.JP if you're willing to do a huge order to save costs on shipping. Also here's a listing of the well-known retailers that offer int'l shipping: http://myfigurecollection.net/about/partners/

Blue outfits really look best on Yuri and I admit I cried during his free skate along with the audience. Also does it mean that Yuri is NOT retiring until he wins gold? Didn't Yurio technically beat Yuri's top score already?

FWIW: I didn't find the sports overshadowing romance since I've always labeled YoI a sports series on the basic level.

Reminder for anyone who was interested in the non-nendoroid figures that the G.E.M. Victor pre-order went up yesterday. It's about $98. I pre-ordered but am ultimately kind of disappointed by the painting on it, plus his facial expression is a lil weird, but oh well. A couple folks noted that it seems par for the course with Megahouse though I think I said before, the nicest figure I own out of my bunch is a Megahouse Takasugi Shinsuke that's painted well and is a nice sculpt so occasionally they get it right... :(

My other merch came in the last week and it's kinda cute though even as a weirdo with quirky merch I never know what to do with these things. I'll probably just hang them up by my jojo crane dolls?

I agree the Viktor fig's face looks weird but I'm always happy to see more male figures for sale. I do miss crane games here and their LE merch.

If you're nearby NYC the Kinokuniya has some cardboard cutouts to promo their YoI button sales. It's everyone in their skating outfits and I kinda wish they sold them.
