Flip Flappers is a currently airing magical girl anime by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who previously directed episode 5 of the second season of Space Dandy, and served as an animation director on several episodes of Dennou Coil. It's also a show that has a really easily giffable ED.

The Cast:

Cocona is a quiet young girl with a future full of opportunities, soon to graduate from school. In spite of this, she seems a bit gloomy and indecisive.

Papika is a strange, childish girl who appears to be about the same age as Cocona. Unlike Cocona, she doesn't go to school, and she has a rad flying surfboard and a cool flying robot buddy! And also a complete and total lack of care for Cocona's personal space!

TT-392 is a robot. He can use a propeller to fly around, and he can tickle people. Don't open his cone.

Uexkull, the buffest rabbit

And the rest of the characters...

So why should I watch this show?
It's only the first episode right now and the bizarre structure means there's not a whole lot to talk about plotwise, but if you like the director's style in his episode of Space Dandy, well, you're gonna love the hell out of this show. Plus, there's some real fuckin good animation. The ED alone was animated by the director himself!

Is this a reconstruction of magical girl anime?
some motherfuckers said this to me as a joke. they're dead now.

Now, let's Flip Flapping!!! (tn: "let's flip flapping" in this context means "let's talk about the cool and promising show flip flappers")

What was that glow on Cocona's thigh when she went all Mahou Shoujo? Was that the wishing jewel? Some sort of rune? Why her thigh specifically? I'm going to be generous and assume that it wasn't coming from, er, upriver.

i'm pretty sure robo-brain was mostly meant as a gag, if flip flappers gets very serious and dark about anything it's probably going to be character drama

yes indeed let us talk about how the character designer chose to position the glowy thing on cocona and whether or not it was placed intentionally near the i can't loving finish this sentence

Should have answered "No, it was a complete accident when we made Papika look like she was about to kiss Cocona, only to reveal that she was merely sniffing Cocona's hair. No romantic tension was ever intended."

actually it's better, that they said "yes it was intentional and people are not just reading into it"

in fact it's pretty goddamn refreshing having word from staff to back it up and replying like that would probably end up adding even worse fuel to dumb arguments

e; also yeah after a quick google ann says that's the director, kiyotaka oshiyama's twitter

My impression so far that this is clearly some Japanese director/producer's idea for Doctor Who fanfiction with a female protagonist as the Time Lord.

i'm not super worried about the next half because while the first six episodes were great, they were also very in tune with oshiyama's style as a director and writer, so i doubt that's going to change. based on everything i've seen and heard about the guy, he's not the type to let his own work fall apart, so the only way i can personally see things going south is if this turns out to be something everyone on-staff was just absolutely unprepared for and production hits some heavy snags

if you're really, really wondering about whether people are reading too much into it or not and the director's very tweet about it doesn't convince you, here's an old interview with the writer of the first six eps to give you an idea of what runs through her mind when writing these kinds of shows

https://yaranakya.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/on-yuri-2-changing-definitions/

interview with ayana yuniko, writer of the first six episodes of flip flaps posted:

Ayana: Yes. There were parts of it that made my yuri spirit burn, after all (laugh). Now that the work is all over, I can say this openly, but when I was working on Locodol, writing some parts of it helped me release the frustration pent-up from Kiniro Mosaic. Writing Kiniro Mosaic, I could only use the purest parts of myself lest I defile the beauty of the work, and it wasn’t easy. So when the time came to work on Locodol, only the dirty me was left. For that reason, the yuri intensity degree of the work became relatively high. Nevertheless, my intention when writing the script was to include enough humor to make the yuri ambiguous. But the execution of the finished product was going in the real deal direction. I saw it and thought, “Can’t make excuses for that…” (laughs).

I: By the way, what was the idea behind making the final episode of Kiniro Mosaic into a musical?

Ayana: When we decided that the final episode would include the characters producing their own work, the director told me “Well then, let’s make that part into a musical.” I myself was surprised at the content, but I thought it would be a waste not to do something we normally couldn’t in the main story episodes. Because the characters are acting out a musical and not themselves, it was fine for Aya and Youko to become a mermaid princess and a prince in a romantic relationship.

i don't think they "spent their creativity" on anything, and i don't think they're turning the focus to collecting rocks as much as they're putting it on resolving yayaka and papika's relationships with cocona. the evil organization is really just serving as a vehicle for that stuff

Mokinokaro posted:

It's reminding of me KLK in that way. The first half was mostly fun, stylized goofy antics and then the plot moved in and derailed the show.

i see this comparison come up a lot and i can't disagree with it more considering kill la kill's second half was sort of garbage that didn't have much of what made the first half fun, while flip flappers has always had the relationship between papika, cocona and yayaka as a major part of it and it hasn't dropped any of the pure illusion stuff, just made it into more of a driving force for character interaction
