That ties in pretty well with Papika not having a form until Cocona recognises her.

DisDisDis posted:The transformation sequences in this seemed way more sexualized than stuff like sailor moon Which is amusing because the transformations in episode three literally stole all its poses from Sailor Moon. They just weren't glowing shadows like in that.

Darth Walrus posted:So the enemy of the week was an oppressive setting coated in lesbian symbolism where a degree of girl-girl affection is allowed, but only within certain tight constraints, and the girls are slowly turned into a single hollow archetype forever experiencing bland, trivial pleasures in an eternal school.

Keeping your fingernails trimmed is lesbian shorthand for 'there might be some sex going on soon', for hopefully obvious reasons. E: I mean it might be a bit more subtle than that and be just to remind us of green hair senpai and by extension the danger of unkwoningly changing something they shouldn't now that we know it's possible. I can't remember exactly where the nail clippers popped up, so. I've a feeling it was during the love hotel bit though in which case, yeah... Cialis Railman posted:It was a joke because nail clippers are a totally mundane thing to find in someone's desk, yet Cocona was scared about what she'd find poking around. This is the most likely answer and I'm just projecting LOVE LOVE SKELETON posted:i feel like that's common sense for any sexual encounter, really. is this actually a Specific Lesbian Thing? (i ask in the anime forum) I mean yeah it's a stereotypically lesbian thing, in straight sexual encounters men are much less likely to have fingernails worth worrying about and woman are less likely to be sticking them in anywhere, though obviously that's not universal.

I mean people saw stuff in the first episode (Cocona's reaction to Papika moving her face towards her in episode 1 being a prime example) and tweeted the director about it and he literally stated 'yeah that's what we meant'. Also the writer (or senario director or something like that) is well known in yuri circles and even does a yuri column in Newtype magazine.

The only thing I didn't really like about this episode was how little context we had for exactly why Yayaka would go that far against someone she obviously cared about that much, other than her presumably getting kicked out of an organisation who's goals we don't even know. I guess the episode hinted at her growing up there and maybe not knowing anything else, but it just seemed like her motivations we weak from our perspective.
