The last two (or more?) years there have been a bunch of goons who have participated in Extra Life. I was sort of surprised I hadn't seen a post about it yet, so here's this.

What is Extra Life?
Extra Life is a charity that raises money for the Children's Miracle Network hospitals. There are things year-round, but the big event is the 24-hour gaming marathon. This year it will be on November 5th. It's a great cause to support by doing what you're probably already planning on doing. You can find more information at http://www.extra-life.org

How can I participate?
Sign up on the Extra-Life site (http://www.extra-life.org/register) and then start sending your donation page out to people to raise money. When you sign up you can choose which Children's Miracle Network hospital your donations will go to.

If you've got a group of people you can form a team. The main SA team over the last couple years is Goons Hate Cancer (http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=28793) but anyone can start a team.

What am I signing up for?
November 5th is the day to play 24-hours worth of games (video games, board games, role playing games, anything that can be called "games".) But it's all on the honor system so you don't have to play on November 5th, you don't have to play for 24-hours in a row, and you don't need to stream, record, live-tweet, or anything else. You can decide how much effort you're going to put into it, the more important thing is spreading the word and raising money to help sick kids.

Can I post on SA about my stream/donations?
You can certainly post your info in this thread (and please do so we know who all is participating!) We also have mod permission to post about streams you are starting in the Let's Stream thread (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3655843). The only rules are that you don't spam the thread begging for donations. You can mention it's an Extra Life stream, but otherwise just treat it like any other stream you'd post in that thread.

What if I don't raise a bunch of money?
That's fine, even if you raise $1 that's $1 more going to help sick kids than there was before!

This will be my third year doing this and it's been a lot of fun. I don't have a lot of recordings from last year because I tried to make things more involved than just one person, a game, and a webcam and ran into a ton of technical issues which made parts of the stream (and thus the recordings) unwatchable(*). But if you're interested there's a link to my Youtube channel in there with the couple I could salvage, and the series I've been recording as hype for this year. You can tell from the views that I don't know a whole lot of people who are really interested in Let's Plays.

This year I think I've learned from last year and things should be a lot smoother. We'll be doing two streams: one going all 24 hours of video games, and a second in the other room for board games that will be going whenever we have enough people around to get a game going.

(*)-If you don't think you can pull it off technically, or might screw up your stream or are otherwise intimidated, I will post the failed portions of last year's stream. You can't do worse.

I'm participating for my second year, will be streaming from 8am CST - 8am CST (or until I pass out from wine). A friend wants me to stream DDR which I'm awful at, so that should be fun. Also joined Goons Hate Cancer.

Last year was a lot of fun, played through a lot of SNES and NES classics that people requested (DKC, Mega Man 2, Contra 3, etc.). Lost my voice at about the 14 hour mark though so had to stop. So this year I'll probably have a lot more "here's just a video of me playing a game" rather than try to provide nonstop commentary and hilarity. Yay Extra Life!

It's my first year this year.

A buddy of mine has done it for the past 3 years. We joked about how our local board gaming event is always the day after, yet he stumbles in and plays board games for 8 hours every time, so I said I would join in in solidarity. Time to put my money where my mouth is. Which is at the BC Children's Hospital, obviously.

For my marathon, I'll be doing 24 HOURS OF TORMENT ripping and tearing through the 2016 version of DOOM. I'll be playing on Nightmare, not Ultra-Nightmare, because there's only so much of me dying in the first level people will be able to take. I'm also planning to have some stupid fun things to do like blind runs described by an observer, co-op play with one person moving the mouse and the other using the keyboard, THE WORST SNAPMAPS, prizes, and me cheating my rear end off by playing older doom games* instead or other terrible loopholes.

I gotta double-check the time, but I think it'll be 5pm-5pm Nov. 5-6, which should leave me 3 hours to play board games too.

I also do a small giveaway as an added incentive to donate just in case helping kids with cancer isn't enough.

A 10 dollar donation will get you a chance to win a game on Steam that is up to 15 dollars in value.

A 20 dollar (or more) donation will get you a chance to win a game on any platform up to 60 dollars in value.

Prizes are purchased out of my own pocket.

Stream will be live on my twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/theiceorb

Or you can watch https://www.goonstack.win as the live stream player will be replacing the front page during the stream.

I'm participating, fourth year in a row. Goal is $400. Already part of a team.

Bonus gimmicks:

If I hit $500, I'll go for an extra hour.

Until my schedule is full, if you donate $25 or more, you can request a game for me to play during the stream. Must be PC or PS4, most cost less for me to get it than the value of your donation, must not be porn.

I've changed a lot since I started hanging with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. I know I can do this by myself! Okay, Eggman! Bring it on!
I'm doing this with Another Person again this year.

Last year we raised a little over $1000 in 24 hours, so this time we're going to try for $2000.

http://www.extra-life.org/participant/gamekiwi

As a bonus, if you donate at least $5 before the day of the marathon you will get to pick ingredients to go on AP's sandwich that he'll eat live on camera. Every $5 lets you pick another item. The submission form is here and goes over the rules and things AP is allergic to in more detail. http://bit.ly/GKELEating

We'll probably also come up with other donation incentives leading up to/during the event, but the sandwich is the big one.

Dude, check it. It's a trash can. And a rollerblade.

Now shovel some cheese curls into my trash hole...
I'm doing it again this year. Goal is at $1500, and I feel confident I can break that mark. Nearly broke $2000 last year.

http://extra-life.org/participant/wms2016

Sadly, I have no incentives to offer to anyone here except for my gratitude and an IOU for a hug that you can cash in if we ever meet in person.

Last year, I did the 24 hours straight thing and really felt it during the following week. Also fell asleep for a bit during the 4am-6am portion, but that second wind really took over for the final 6 hours. I couldn't see straight, yet if I played an extra 30 minutes, I may have finished VVVVVV at the very end of the stream.

It'll be two 12s this year from 10-10 EST on 11/5 and 11/6. My stream will also be family-friendly as I work at a middle school and will have students tuning in. That means E or E10 games only (unrated games are subject to review from the building principal, so don't expect anything too wild on the PC side of things), breaks for 15 minutes at the end of every 2 hour segment, and no foul language. So if you're looking for something safe, tune in. :)

And, of course, good luck to everyone participating! For the love of whatever deity you hold dearest, please remember to stay hydrated, take breaks, and get up to at least stretch. A little bit of that went a long way in helping me get through last year's marathon.

Speaking of which, my podcast is getting together to do stuff this year, so it'll be my first non-solo effort. We'll be live at 11 AM CST at https://www.twitch.tv/klapman, and will be going the full 24 hours. I genuinely don't know if there'll be drinks, but if there are the drinks will be vodka + Red Bull, so that we don't just get drowsy and fall asleep.

For now the plan is to have a main centerpiece starting at about 9 PM, with us playing through the entirety of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. So that'll be from 9 PM to somewhere around 4 AM, I'll probably have a separate archive for that. There probably won't be any pizza tracker + frog stuff this year because I won't be stoned the entire time, but I'll try and work some funny stuff in there.

We have a pretty solid mic and a half-decent webcam, so the technical quality shouldn't be laughable.

This is my first year participating and my locally owned game shop is hosting it. Like true bandwidth hogs, we're using the shop next door's wifi to run this poo poo overnight because the local ISP couldn't be bothered to run a data drop into the store in the last month. We even told 'em the urgency was for a kid's hospital charity and they just said "Our technician will be there sometime between never and oblivion."

I'm going to attempt to run a livestream on twitch, which I've never done, and play games that are critically acclaimed which I've never played. I'm not a regular games poster, but my fiance, Target Practice, is. This is our 3rd year doing extra life, but our secret is...we usually don't play. Anything. Because we're volunteering at our local in-person 12 hour Extra Life event!

We're part of Team CSU Bakersfield, raising money for the only children's hospital in the Bakersfield, Ca area-- and it's badly needed. Last year, Extra Life in Bakersfield raised more than $30,000 for the Lauren Small Children's Medical Center at Dignity Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. This money is used to buy life-saving medical equipment that helps families stay local rather than making the 100+ mile trip to another city. We'd really like to beat it this year.

We can't do streaming games because we're working, but we may stream registration/check in! So exciting!
