So I got this game when it first came out, got the pre order special edition and everything after playing the early access beta and all (it was a lot of fun at first glance) then it came out and I played a bit more with a friend, until they played more than me and leveled past me making grouping up pretty much just annoying/useless to them and we all sort of lost interested (them having I guess no EndGame stuff, and me getting busy with other stuff and having to solo grind before it looks like they made that easier to do).

If a trailer can get me interested again, and now looks like a good a time as any to get back into the game for a bit, (was going to do that Amazon starter kit), should I just delete my old chars and roll a new one or so to do the LvD stuff as well as run through the story.

And with the LvD stuff (that XP armor sounds great) do I have enough time to casually grind the requirements for that out while going through a characters story, or should I focus on getting all that done as fast as possible, then go back through the story another time only after I have said armor?

Have been hankering to get into an MMO again for reasons I cannot understand (I don't really have a lot of free time, energy, etc, but I just... Want to?) and outside of the work EVE takes to get into, TOR seems like the best bet with the expansion coming up.

Looks like you have plenty of time for everything except maybe the Legendary tier because that's pretty ridiculous and includes events that may only come around again once or twice during the time remaining. If you are worried about playtime, skip the generic side quests and exploration quests and just do the planetary/class quests (purple icons on your map and quest list I think). If I remember right you get a couple pieces for Level 25, a couple for Level 50, a couple for beating Shadows of Revan expansion, a couple for chapters 1-9 of KOTFE, and the last for chapters 10-16 plus some easy side stuff. And then you get the dark or light companion if you get a second character from the opposite faction up in levels too.

Edit: right now with the xp bonuses you will level faster than the story by far. Once you have the +xp armor you will level even faster, letting you skip chunks of the story if you care to. People already have been, especially working on the legendary tier requirement to get all 8 classes to level 50. The game will put you down to the level of the content, I'm 13(11) in Korriban now.

My old 7 1/2 completed class storylines are over on begeren colony or something like that, but I made a sith marauder named Bagrada for DvL on jedi covenant. He may get replaced by an imperial operative this weekend, I haven't decided yet if I'm going to hang around and try to do raids and guild stuff or if I'm just going to bum rush the easier DvL achievements then call it quits.

Jeeze, while harse, that actually sounds sort of more "rewarding" when things all come together...

Also while having 40+ fight a single boss sounds pretty cool actually, (What other games have it like that over the current instanced style for single groups now? Besides EVE)

And how the hell did that work back in the early days of 56K/DSL/ISDN/Cable Bastard in a low pop neighborhood?

Isn't Everquest still played? Or is it only a shadow of its former self?

Most of the raids were hard to get to for the average player, so you'd have competition from other guilds racing to beat you to it but generally not enough people to lag the area too badly. Plus older content was still relevant even though it didn't scale, there was no easy to get "catch up" gear like there is in WoW where quest greens at the start of the new expansion already outclass all but the best raid gear from the previous expansion. So people were spread out a lot more than they are these days.

Dark Age of Camelot was another big one in the day. Relic raids were unplayable on dialup, 200-300 players would meet up at a keep and spam spells at each other. I don't think I ever made it through one without going linkdead and unable to log back in until it was over. DAOC did have the huge raids, borrowed from everquest. Not at first, but it wasn't long before each of the three realms had a dragon to slay. A large underworld was added where you could earn access for your side locking out the other two, then you'd go in and clear out their stragglers then raid the demon bosses down there. The first expansion then included 3 big dungeons and one massive raid dungeon for each faction, pretty cool areas. Trials of Atlantis then went nuts with it, with 10 tiers of 10 challenges each ranging from solo kills/puzzles to group content, to massive raids. The problem was you had to do it all mostly in order which was hard as hell to coordinate for a realm full of people. I was one of the few to finish it all on my server at the time, we had a regular raid group that would catch people up and run through them all. My friends and I loved it though we were far in the minority since most people complained about having to do dungeons and raids to compete in a game that is focused on pvp. People say that is why DAOC died though I think the awkward UI, interface and old feel of the game could not compete with WoW and the other modern games.

Everquest is still releasing expansions for the invested players so it must be making enough back from them to be worth keeping going. DAOC is still going too, with a goon presence even. And I guess all this is better suited for an MMO nostalgia thread than the SWTOR thread.

It looks like two of the flashpoints you have to do are for the opposite faction too, so even if you just want the gear and not the companion you will still need a DvL char on both sides.

ahhh, down to just needing hm blood hunt and the rakghoul event one to finish legendary. I'm sure I can get blood hunt done, but I'm not so sure if rakghoul is gonna run again.

I just now randomly got credit for kill 50 rakghouls during the event by killing the shade stalkers in the chapter 12 wilderness. That still leaves the infect players one though I think.

Edit: nevermind its just kill 50 rakghouls in general, the infect is the only event specific one.

I finished the last tactical flashpoint for my own run at the easy dvl tiers. My sith random groups were 3 dps and a tank at best, usually 4 dps. My smuggler healer made in light of that did the other half and wouldn't get groups with less than two healers, usually three. Must be a republic thing. Or everyone else had the same idea.

The best run was three stealthers and a trooper. We sped ran athiss using stealth and crowd control to skip past all the trash so it was like an escort quest with our challenge to get the trooper through. He died standing still to the four fireballs at the end boss, even with spammed heals, so I guess we failed the escort.

Also chapter 13 or whichever was the heist restored my faith in this game and made me glad I came back for this event. I previously had stopped after opening up odessen. Spewy...

Hey, I'm just getting back into the game after a year and a half off. Have a few simple questions:

1) Is the only way to get the LvD stuff on new characters?

2) How long is the double XP thing lasting? Last I checked it still had more than a month of game time left on it.

3) Are there any drawbacks to making a level 60 other than missing out on the storyline beforehand? Do you start with appropriate gear? Do you get it quickly enough not to matter?

Yes, you have to start a new character during this event, which ends next week. Not sure about the double xp, but it may end with the expansion's release. Drawbacks of the instant 60 are missing the class storyline and being unable to do the LvD stuff. You do start with decent gear, plenty to go right into the KOTFE expansion.

FYI doing all the LvD stuff up through earning the companion and the full set of xp bonus gear took me about 48 hours total in game though I did spend extra time finishing the sith warrior storyline before moving on to KOTFE. I leveled both characters to 65 doing only storyline quests, with 2-3 warzone pvp matches and doing all the dungeon flashpoints once on the easiest setting I could. That was with spamming space bar through cutscenes I'd seen already. I didn't bother getting the other 6 classes to 50, maxing crew tradeskills, or doing the extra stuff for the legendary tier.

I hated him after the bounty hunter tattooine story (haven't played much farther yet), but liked him in KOTFE - must have been Vette's influence there.

Curious, when or for what spec does someone use a companion in tank mode? I leveled most of my characters with their companion in heal mode, its brainless if a bit slow. I know if you level up the companion's influence or are well geared you can run in DPS mode. I did that for my healing smuggler run and still had no downtime. But tank mode seems really slow. Maybe if you are the assassin/shadow with backstab abilities? Or for a group flashpoint if you are down a person?

I'm usually well undergeared so that effects my choices, I think my smuggler went from a level 20 weapon to a level 55 legacy weapon from SoR during my latest sprint to 65.

Nerd Of Prey posted:

I remember making a huge post about this in the old thread, but basically a tank companion is ideal for smuggler/agent and consular/inquisitor. For the ranged AC's because you can just let the companion round everybody up and then AOE them down, and for the stealth AC's they help with positioning so you can backstab constantly for maximum damage.

There's zero downtime with a tank companion. You don't take damage, and if they start taking too much, mounting heals them to full instantly. This includes rocket boost, which activates instantly and can be used indoors on a relatively short cooldown. You can cancel rocket boost with your regen ability, which tops you off and gets your companion ready for the next pull.

So it just goes kill everything, tap rocket boost, tap regen, repeat. This works for just about any class, really, but a healer is good in most situations too, and DPS is good for a lot of classes if you're doing easy stuff and neither of you is taking a ton of damage.

I like using a DPS companion with a DPS guardian/juggernaut, because even outside tank spec they are extremely resilient and don't really need a tank or healer unless you're doing really tough content.

Good advice, and thanks everyone else for your replies. I slowly and mindlessly did all soloable content in the game on my jedi sentinel with a companion in heal mode, including every heroic. I think the only thing I actually had trouble with was a 4 man final quest (Oricon maybe?) where the boss had a heal on a short timer, requiring more than the base interrupt. I think I finally got it by running out of melee and using my force leap as the 2nd interrupt.

yeah my clever plan to solo my way through the story flashpoints died when i remember that i got into this late and didnt really feel like dedicating my existence to this game. oh well, my pixel-life is incomplete.

I did everything up to the companion reward and I don't think it was worth the grind. The companion will have to be Vette/Mako/Blizz levels of awesome to be worth the trouble, and my drive to finish the xp armor set was baffling considering I don't have any plans to level any more characters. It did get me to finally buckle down and finish KotFE on a character, but the story wasn't that good. Hopefully KotET will be better.

Question for imperial agent & the later KotFE chapters: How does the SCORPIO stuff play out with an agent? Is it one small scene where she acknowledges you worked together, then business as usual for the rest of the story? Any good scenes?

Yeah you can join him but it'll never be brought up again or lead anywhere.

You get one brief and forgettable throwaway mission on Hoth from another hand of jaedus, and a line about him having to work from the shadows for a while and will be radio silent so keep doing what you're doing as chapter 3 goes down. If I'm remembering right, it's been a while.
