Returning players - 2017 has been a great year for SWTOR, a new lead producer, Keith Kanneg, who has a pretty good vision of how the game should be. There has been a shift away from the "story in a corridor" game play mechanics introduced with the KOTFE expansion in 2014, and a focus on group activities. We're not quite there yet - but we're getting there! That said, if you are looking for a single player game with a bunch of good stories, SWTOR is for you!

10/06/2017 - Server merges have been announced! All East Coast US servers are being combined into one server on 11/8, and all West Coast servers are being combined into another. EU ones are being merged too, separating by English, German and French speaking.

08/13/2017 - Game update 5.4 arrives on August 22nd. It introduces a new Flashpoint "Crisis on Umbara", along with new player stronghold that is a train. No word yet on if decorations will fall off the walls due to constant movement. It continues the story line of Iokath introduced in 5.2

07/06/2017 - Game update 5.3 is dropping on July 11th. It will include a brand new Stronghold (player housing) on Manaan (Water planet from the original KOTOR!). It also will include the 2nd boss (or bosses) of the newest raid that they're slowly releasing!

04/07/2017 update - Tuesday 4/10 will see the release of update 5.2 to the game (read about it here) which will have some much needed improvements to gearing since 5.0. If you quit your subscription due to Galactic Command, now may be a good time to come back - Operations bosses will drop loot again as Buddha intended, and they are releasing the first boss of a new Operation. This is the first new Raid since October of 2014!

It's generally recommended to subscribe for at least some period of time to play the game - currently the best deal out there is through Amazon - $40 nets you 90 days of subscription time and some Cartel Coins to get you some pretty toys from the cartel market or buy some unlocks. Origin also has a pack for $30 which is the same price as two months subscription, but gives you an extra 1,050 coins than you'd get otherwise.

Knights of the Eternal Throne is the latest story focused expansion, released in December of 2016.

This expansion, like the previous expansion is FREE to all "Premium" players - a Premium Player is a subscribed player. Unlike Knights of the Fallen Empire, which released one chapter a month until it's completion, Knights of the Eternal Throne launched the entire expansion on day 1 - All 9 chapters.

The business model that SWTOR has taken is one of free expansions as long as you are a subscriber or (Preferred) - meaning, whatever content has been released up until your subscription lapses is yours to keep forever.

Spoiler Rules - Absolutely any story elements from KOTET must be in *spoiler* text. Since there will be a lot of new players coming to the game, let's try to minimize class storyline spoilers as well.

Knights of the Eternal Throne is the fourth "official" expansion pack for Star Wars: The Old Republic, set for release on December 2nd, 2016. The story takes place directly after Knights of the Fallen Empire, which has been the ongoing storyline for the last year. KOTET will again raise the level cap of characters to level 70, along with some class balancing and tweaks.

SWTOR is very newbie friendly - All subscribers currently who create new characters are given the option to either play the "classic" SWTOR game, which consists of 8 separate fully voiced and animated class stories, but it also gives new players and veterans alike the ability to start immediately playing the newest expansion. All subscribers get one free "token" character who starts at level 60 who can immediately jump into the fray with Knights of the Fallen Empire. This is great if you played one class storyline years ago and don't want to play it again, but would like to have the other Advanced Class for endgame activity.

Beginning with the launch of Shadow of Revan and continuing with KOTFE, Bioware has made the game more story focused and made it easier for people to play through the game alone if they don't want to group with others. With the launch of Shadow of Revan, "Solo mode" flashpoints were introduced which allowed characters to experience the 6 flashpoints integral to the storyline of SoR by themselves, with the assistance of a "Jesus-bot", an overpowered robot who took the place of 2-3 other characters in the flashpoint. This continued with Knights of the Fallen Empire, an expansion that was completely single player with some miscellaneous activities at the end that could be done with a group. KOTET is also a single player focused storyline, but has multiple difficulty levels so veterans can challenge themselves a bit more while new players can experience the "easy mode" that the game has been to focus on the story without learning how to interrupt mobs or use CC. Don't worry if you don't know what that means - more later.

Bioware has recognized that the focus on story is favorably received, but there is also a demand for group activity and has stated that 2017's focus will be on new multiplayer activities for their, y'know, multiplayer game.

How do I level fast?

In SWTOR you gain XP at a very rapid pace. SWTOR is designed so that a player with no XP bonus items (XP potions, or the aforementioned XP armor) can level completely off "story" quests - these are the main class storylines, along with the planetary story arcs. There are many other alternatives to the planetary storyline if you're doing a second playthrough - PvP, Flashpoints, Heroic Missions, etc.

:siren: Which story is the best? :siren: - This gets asked almost every...single...page. There is no right answer. Some people like some stories, and others hate the same stories. It is generally agreed that the Agent is the overall best story, but even that is just an opinion. PLAY WHAT LOOKS INTERESTING TO YOU and don't rely on others to tell you what is "best". It's like asking someone what porn is best. Some like your classic teen porn, others like rough stuff, some like interracial, and some like gay. Oedzi likes tentacle porn. It's all opinion.

The road thus far...

SWTOR began as 8 separate storylines that converge into one with the release of the new expansion. A Sith slave who overthrew his oppressors, rising to power in the Sith Inquisitor ranks while gathering immense power from ancient artifacts. An out for themselves smuggler who’s search for their stolen ship led to an alliance with the Republic. A lowly Imperial Agent who began with an undercover mission to spy on the Republic only to find corruption amongst the ranks, who found themselves questioning their loyalty. And many more.
Bioware has released summaries of Act 1-3 for all 8 of the main classes, which can be found here (Contain spoilers, but good recaps if you haven’t played in a while or don’t feel like going through a storyline) -

Upon completion of Act 3, characters’ paths began to merge. Both Imperial and Republic were called to the distant planet of Ilum, where a former ally of the Empire had risen as a new threat - wanting to wipe out both factions to start a new Empire. The Hutts made a power play on the planet Makeb, a source of Isotope-5 - but the mining of the compound threatened to destroy the planet. The Republic was successful in evacuating the planet, only to find that it wasn’t destroyed - ironically, salvation of the planet came from Imperial forces.

The Dread Masters, freed from their prison on Belsavis by the Empire, began their rise to power on Belsavis, Denova, Asation and Darvannis and threatened both factions until finally stopped on the fiery moon of Oricon.
There was no time to rest, however, as seemingly unrelated attacks were launched simultaneously on the home worlds of the Jedi and Sith, Tython and Korriban. An uneasy alliance between the Empire and Republic grew as a small faction worked to discover who was behind these attacks. Led to the homeworld of the Rakata, an ancient species of mystics, it was discovered that high ranking individuals in both the Empire and Republic had been corrupted and were planning attacks on both. Defeating the two, our characters discovered that the true mastermind was none other than Revan, a Lord of the Sith who turned his back on the Empire to become a Jedi.

Drawn to the distant planet of Rishi, the team worked to find Revan’s true motivations. Defeating the Revanites on Rishi led the alliance of Republic and Imperial teams to Yavin, where Revan was finally confronted and his true intent was revealed.

Spoilers for the ending of Shadow of Revan -

Revan had learned that Emperor Vitiate, previously thought to be dead, was returning to power. Revan believed that in order to defeat the Emperor, he had to purge himself of any weakness - which led to him becoming mad and genocidal. Defeated by a coalition of Imperial and Rebublic forces, we learned that the Emperor had indeed returned and become more powerful than ever. The alliance chased him to the planet Ziost, where Vitiate showed his power and destroyed the entire planet. To him, this was only the beginning...

Which leads us to Knights of the Fallen Empire. Set five years after Ziost, a new threat to the galaxy has risen - the Zakuul. Led by the mysterious Valkorion, both Republic and Imperial forces have fallen. Their only hope is the Outlander - once a champion of the republic or the empire, he/she alone can lead the scattered former members of the alliance that defeated Revan to defeat Valkorian and the Zakuul army. The Outlander is you.

General spoilers for the Knights of the Fallen Empire storyline for those that have been away a while and don't remember, or didn't care much to play through it - The Outlander discovers that Valkorion and Vitiate are one and the same, though it remains unclear if the Emperor possessed Vitiate or merged with him. In the very beginning of the storyline, you are introduced to Valkorion's son, Arcann. Arcann, seeing a chance to seize power for himself, murders Valkorion and frames the Outlander. Sentenced to rot away in a carbonite prison, the Outlander is saved by former members of the alliance that defeated Revan. He escapes captivity, only to find that Valkorion/Vitiate has implanted himself inside the Outlander's head - to help guide him, or destroy him...well, we still don't know.

The Outlander builds an Alliance of various characters including former companions for other classes (Neato!) which also allows you the opportunity to murder some of the less popular companions. During his quest to defeat Arcann, we are also introduced to another major character for the upcoming expansion - Senya Thrall, mother of Arcann and former wife of Valkorion., and Vailyn, Valkorion and Senya's daughter, who is lining up to be the major enemy in Knights of the Eternal Throne

Knights of the Eternal Throne begins immediately following chapter 16 of Knights of the Fallen Empire, and when the expansion launches any character level 65 or higher will be able to begin the story, no matter how far they got in their initial class story or if they finished any of the other expansions. It's expected that subscribers will be given a free level 65 character much like KOTFE granted a free level 60, but this has not been confirmed yet.

It's been a while since I played - what's changed?

Reddit has a pretty extensive list of the changes since launch, so I'll try to cover what's changed in the last year or so.

Main Stats - This is the biggest change. Prior to KOTFE, each class had their own individual main stat (Aim, Cunning, Willpower or Strength). Beginning with KOTFE, these stats have all been merged into one main stat, Mastery. This is to make gearing a bit simpler and reduce "stat clutter". In addition, the stats "Crit" and "Surge" are now rolled into one stat, Crit. :siren:You don't need to worry about stats until endgame :siren: And even then, you really only have to worry once you start doing Hard Mode raiding since Story Mode raiding "Bolsters" you to having stats equivalent of what a well geared raider would have.

Companions - Companions have received a major overhaul. In addition to the addition of new companions from the cartel market (Treek and HK-51), in KOTFE companions are no longer restricted to a single role. Hate Quinn but you needed to run with your healer? No more! Click the toggle and Jaesa will now smother you with Kolto while talking about raping younglings. Companions no longer require gear, either. Their power is based on your influence level (previously known as affection). So feel free to dress Jaesa up as a slutty slave dancer.

There have also been the introduction of several "Cartel Market" companions - Beasts such as Akk Dogs, Nexus, Exoboars, along with Droids that can take the place of a regular companion in combat - and some of the earlier ones do tricks! They cannot craft for you, however.

Crafting - This is another big one. Everything you knew about crafting changed with 4.0 - Official post here.. Long story short - Crafting has been simplified as well - less variety of materials, and with the introduction of "Mastery" less overall items to craft. You may remember Biochem as being the most useful crew skill because of reusable items - these have all been removed from the game. As of patch 5.4, Biochem reusables have returned to the game (only level 70).

Level syncing - Beginning with KOTFE, your character level will be lowered to that of the planet you are on effectively, though you will keep all of your skills and abilities you have earned. This is a change that will allow you to group with friends who are lower level than you, and should also lead to some interesting world PvP as 60s will no longer be able to sit outside Tattooine cities ganking level 25s. You retain the skill set of your actual level though, so even sync'd down to level 25 you'll be more effective than an actual level 25.

Guild Information - Goons are currently most active on the Jedi Covenant server. We have two guilds - the primary guild is That's No Goon, on Imperial side. Our Republic guild is Goon Squad. Our guild leader is Nipponophile ME because Oedzi finally gave up and plays Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

To get invited, do a search in game for “That's No Goon”, and filter by guild name. Contact whoever shows up and ask them to invite you, if they can't, they'll let someone who can know. There is an old Enjin site for That’s No Goon – don’t bother applying on it because it’s no longer monitored.

Galactic Strongholds (Player Housing) - You can now buy yourself a nice little house to decorate and call your own. The cheapest digs are on the faction homeworlds of Dromund Kaas and Coruscant, and are relatively inexpensive to fully unlock (Still a couple million credits total), the Nar Shadaa sky palace is a bit pricier. Tatooine and Yavin IV have strongholds for the insanely wealthy - expect to spend 13 million or so to unlock them totally. You can have up to 4 active strongholds, and the more they are decorated the higher your bonus to your conquest points. Decorations can be purchased, come from Cartel packs, and are drops from Operations, Flashpoints and Reputation vendors. A good starter guide to the basic decorations.

We have a guild ship, too. The Space Bar, which you can use to quick travel to the week's conquest target, or just hang out with the Twilek dancers. We don't judge. Strongholds, whether guild or personal, are a good place to keep a GTN, vaults and mailboxes so you can do all your business without the nasty need to move.

Planetary Conquest - A new thing to grind. Help expand the guild ship by winning conquest points, if you fill your weekly quota and the guild places in the top 10 of a planet, you get an encryption, which we can use to grow the ship, along with other fabulous rewards. Even if the guild doesn't hit it's conquest goals, you get a reward for hitting your personal goal - in Knights of the Fallen Empire, the rewards for hitting conquest are used to craft raid-tier gear.

Galactic Star Fighter - It's a not-on-rails pvp space shooter. Buy and level up different types of ships, and use them to explode the other team. Opinions on how good this is vary a lot, so give it a try and then decide you hate it for yourself. Just be warned that you'll probably wind up facing an 8-man premade with all ships maxed out, and you'll lose badly.

The Cartel Market: With free to play came the Cartel Market, allowing you to convert real world money into Cartel Coins, used to buy cosmetic goods, speeders, pets, XP boosts and a number of other unlocks and convenience features. The only thing you can't buy is your dignity. Or power.

Collections: Once you have bound a cartel market item to yourself, you can make as many bound copies of it as you want. For a fee in Cartel Coins based on the item's rarity, you can unlock this for any character on your account (not legacy, account.) This makes it that much easier to dress you and your companions up like a dance troupe and take over the holo-net.

Free to Play - In late 2012 the game went "free to play". F2P is a decent way to experience the class stories if you don't care about doing endgame or group activity. F2P is severely restricted, your character earns less XP so you have to do more missions, and there are some major QOL problems. You gain preferred status if you were a previous subscriber or spend any money in the cartel market, which makes life a bit easier but ultimately you need to subscribe to experience the full game. As of the latest expansion, Knights of the Eternal Throne, all endgame activity requires a subscription.

What class should I play???

FIRST AND FOREMOST - Play the class that interests you. There is no "best story", and asking which story is the best will lead to two pages of people arguing. All of the stories are enjoyable to some extent, and some prefer some stories to others. Play what looks fun! For example, many people think the Consular is the best Republic storyline and hate the Knight story. I'm the opposite, I loved the knight storyline and found the consular boring. This is called "opinions" and everyone has them. :D

SWTOR is a pretty well balanced game, so all classes can be a viable choice. If one appeals to you, go ahead and play them. The game is all about alts, too, so don’t feel like it will be your only character. Play the character which story appeals the most to you. Don't worry about which DPS character does the most DPS - unless you're part of the 2% that does endgame raiding or PvP, all classes perform just fine.

If you’re completely lost, and story doesn’t matter as much, decide what role you want to play.

Tank – Tanking is the rarest role, and it means you’ll get into groups super quick and will always be needed. It can also be a challenge to play if you have no MMO experience, and the leveling experience can be a bit slow. All tank advanced classes can also DPS with one of their other specs. Tank capable classes are –
Guardian/Juggernaut – Have the most defensive cool-downs, so they tend to survive the longest. Have a gap closer in Force Leap, but have limited ranged moves. Keeping threat can be a bit more difficult.
Vanguard/Powertech – More AOE threat capability than Guardians, and a bit more range – though still will need to be in Melee range for most of their fights. Heavy armor so they have some good basic defense. Probably the “simplest” of the tanking classes to play.
Shadow/Assassin – Best AOE threat of the tank classes, plus good utility with the ability to CC and stealth. Force Shroud/Resilience allows them to cheese the mechanics on some bosses. Have possibly the highest skill curve to learn.

Healing – Healing is a support role, also much needed in groups.
Commando/Mercenary – Heavy armor, mobile healers that shoot green goo through dual blasters or a BFG. Focuses on big, direct heals.
Scoundrel/Operative – Medium armor, some utility with droid CCs and stealth. Big focus on HOTs (Heals over time).
Sage/Sorcerer – Light armor, once the “king poo poo” of raid healing, they have been nerfed a bit along with the other classes buffed so it is a bit more equal. Die very quickly in PvP. loving IMPOSSIBLE TO KILL IN PVP.

LEET DPS
For DPS, you must first decide if you want to be a ranged DPS or a melee DPS. Melee DPS have a bit higher skill curve as they have to watch their placement in fights a bit closer than ranged, and involves more movement. Melee DPS classes include –
Guardian/Juggernaut – Some of their tank utility carries over into their DPS specs, allowing them to survive a bit more.
Sentinel/Marauder – Possibly the highest skill curve of the DPS classes, requires a bit of “button overload” and resource management.
Scoundrel/Operative – Relying on stealth in one spec, and DoTs in their other spec.
Shadow/Assassin – Another stealth or DoT choice.
Vanguard/Powertech - Yes, they have guns, but they are melee. Relying on fire or knives, you gotta be close.

Ranged DPS classes include –

Gunslinger/Sniper – Biggest range of all the DPS classes, you can completely avoid many attacks by fighting at max range. Specs range from mindless to a bit tougher depending on if you want direct damage or DoTs.
Sage/Sorcerer – Lightning, lightning, lightning. Had a good run in 4.0 with Madness/Balance being the most OP spec in PvP - we'll see what 5.0 holds.
Commando/Mercenary – A bit more mobile in 3.0 than they previously were, but still mostly turrets that shoot missiles or gross blobs if you are a Republic character.

How do I level???

Leveling through the game is very intuitive. If you are playing for the first time, simply progressing through the game’s storyline and completing the main planetary quest line (generally given at the start of the planet) will get you to 50ish when you complete Act 3 on Corellia. The "required" missions will be identified with a purple quest triangle marker.

This is a major change from launch, which required you to do side missions to level - these side missions are now completely optional, but a good way to earn extra XP if you want to overlevel a bit.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel brought the level cap to 55, and you can go to Makeb starting at level 51. There are spoilers for your class quest when you begin Makeb, so use caution. Makeb will get you to level 55 or higher depending on how many missions you take.

At level 55, you can begin the Oricon storyline (a mission on the fleet will direct you there) which rewards you with a few pieces of good gear for level 55. However, with the introduction of Shadows of Revan, the gear is quickly obsolete so Oricon is no longer necessary, but a good story that concludes the Dread Masters storyline.

Once level 55 53, you unlock the Shadows of Revan Prelude. This is a series of 4 flashpoints which you can do by yourself with the aid of a nigh-unkillable “God Robot”. Completing these flashpoints will reward you with a full set of gear which is better than that which drops on Oricon, with the exception of Relics, along with a top tier weapon for your companion.
You should be level 56-57 once done with the prelude, and you can begin the Rishi storyline. Completing the entire planet along with side quests should get you very close to 60. After Rishi, you travel to Yavin IV which should complete your leveling experience, depending on your subscriber level, guild membership, and whether you use an XP boost or not.

Flashpoints, or playing with other people

The game also has Flashpoints, beginning at level 10. Flashpoints are a great way to supplement both your gear and experience. Flashpoints are group instances that have additional story elements. These are optional, but if you are leveling your second or third character the side missions on planets may become redundant and you may want to try them out. Flashpoints require a tank, healer, and two DPS (with the exception of Kuat Drive Yards), and you can “queue” for them with Group Finder. Most Flashpoints have Hard Modes available at higher levels for improved drops.

Beginning with the launch of Knights of the Fallen Empire almost all Flashpoints will have both a Veteran (previously called Tactical) and Master Mode (previously called Hard Mode) available via group finder. Veteran Flashpoints are role neutral - 4 DPScould be grouped together, able to heal each other with healing stations scattered about. Master Mode flashpoints require a tank, a healer and two DPS. Thanks to a "bolster" system, you will be able to group with people significantly lower than you in order to experience these flashpoints.

Flashpoints that are important to the story all now have a "Solo mode" (Called Story Mode) available which allows you to see the Flashpoint without the "talking to other people" part that people hate.

Operations

Operations are SWTOR’s versions of classic raids. Beginning with KOTFE, anyone level 50-65 will be able to queue in group finder for the "operation of the day" and will be bolstered to the appropriate level for the raid.

The first few raids became accessible at level 50, hinting at the Dread Master storyline –

Eternity Vault – A secret prison long lost on Belsavis has been discovered, what secrets does it hold? (Hint – the secret includes giant bosses and puzzles)
Karagga’s Palace – You have been sent to visit Karagga the Hutt, who has violated an agreement with your faction. What secrets will you find in his Palace? (Hint – the secrets include giant bosses and puzzles. Hope you like Tower of Hanoi!)
Explosive Conflict – A fierce Trandoshan mercenary known as Warlord Kephess has invaded the planet of Denova, and you are sent to defeat him. Who does he serve? What secret is he hiding? (Hint – his secret is giant bosses, and puzzles. Hope you like Minesweeper!)

The next set become available at 55, starting and finishing the Dread Master storyline –

Terror From Beyond – On the distant planet Asation, a Hypergate has been opened, unleashing bizarre creatures from Tron THE BEYOND onto an unsuspecting world. Who is behind the Hypergate and what is their plan? (Hint – Their plan involves giant bosses, and an annoying as hell puzzle that is prejudiced against the color blind)

Operations have several versions -

Story Mode, designed to be accessible to anyone level 50-65 and designed mostly for casual play and people who want to see the story.

Hard Veteran Mode, which is for progression raiders and where the best gear drops.

Nightmare Master modes, which drops the same gear level as Hard Mode but has increasingly difficult mechanics. Not all raids have a NiM version, but those that do offer rewards other than standard gear - Decorations, Mounts, plus your e-peen will be HUGE if you get the achievement.

There are some datamined changes for the upcoming expansion. Marauders were the overall highest damage spec for PvE throughout 4.0, and I don't expect the changes coming to make that much different. Melee classes no longer can be interrupted when doing "channeled" abilities like Ravage, so that'll be nice in PvP.

Well as of right now they're pretty easy. Arsenal merc is pretty much the same as it was in 4.0. A few changes coming up but mostly to simplify things.

Same as it was at launch. If you just want to jam through story you can do it with as few moves as you feel like using. If you want to play any of the endgame activities or PvP there are a few more moves you'll want to use.

Never really understood the ability bloat complaints. This isn't a console game, it's a MMORPG. At least it's not EverQuest, there you had literally hundreds of spells and abilities. Even the most complex class can do almost everything with one or two bars.

Yeah let me tell you the main reason I don't use (Agent story spoilers) Kaliyo is because on my Operative, second character ever played back at launch, used her exclusively. Then came Corellia and i lost her, so I had to switch to Scorpio since she had second best gear but it was still rough to go through that drat planet with under geared companion. Stuck with Scorpio after that.

I couldn't use Lokin because as a pre 2.0 Operative literally all my damage came from backstabbing and he couldn't tank.

I like Concealment better now overall, though I do miss the PvP insane burst of Hidden Strike, backstab, vanish, Hidden Strike. Killed most people before the knockdown wore off. :)

Now all the taxi points are unlocked automatically so the time traveling is cut dramatically. And with legacy perks, you can make quick travel have zero cooldown so hopping around planets is much easier. :)

I mentioned it before but the DvL armor is not just great for its +XP boost, it has phenomenal base stats too. It's essentially level 50 armor wearable at level 1. It bolsters well in PvP and you don't even need to put mods in it. The best reward ever for altaholics.

Some datamined info about a new thing to grind post 70, Galactic Command.

Also some little tidbits in there - they're releasing a new type of Party Jawa it appears, so people who missed out on the sub reward early on can do the achievements.

KOTET chapters (and possibly KOTFE chapters) can be replayed on higher difficulties with characters.

There will be a new portable faction neutral holo-class trainer like the Hutt statue from RotHC, Senya.

You speak to the skill mentor in the combat training area, or you can buy the field respec perk for 200k to do it at any time.

Both specs are good, I'd say Pyrotech is probably better early on and leveling. AP is better for HM raiding, but obviously if you're not doing progression raiding any spec is good.

That's No Goon, in it's prime, had a regular group of 8 Hard Mode raiders. We played every Tuesday/Thursday night and knew our group like the back of our hands. We beat HM DF like 3 times and HM DP like 4 times.

HM DF and DP is a HUGE change from SM.

Unless TNG gets a group of 8 regular raiders again, I wouldn't expect do anything past EC HM. :(

If you don't plan on doing "serious" endgaming or crafting you might want to just go with Scavenging, Bioanalysis and Slicing. That way you can sell the mats you get on the GTN and slice open credit lockboxes along the route while you're playing.

Even that's been nerfed. There's no such thing as an influence drop - what used to give you negative affection now just grants a smaller amount of influence than making the "right" choice. Ironically, for raising your influence with companions it's better to choose a choice they disapprove of than something they don't have any opinion of.

Of course, in KOTFE that can lead to some companions leaving but any companion that leaves can have a "non-canon" version pulled back after you finish KOTFE.
