While still overpaid, Deng has atleast started to look like the guy he was last season recently. Getting into double digits consistently with some rebounding and reasonable defense. I'm still much happier with having him on that contract than having tried to get Evan Turner or Kent Bazremore, 2 of the guys a lot of Lakers fans were clamoring for last offseason.

Actually his stats in 11 games in december are fine, 10 and 5 on 47% FG and 36% from 3pt

Beaten like hell but it's loving incredible that the Bulls hired Fred Hoiberg to run an up-tempo, perimeter-oriented offense and then gave him players like Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, and Michael Carter-Williams to run it.

This might be a bigger mismatch between coaching philosophy and talent than Mike D'Antoni being hired to run a Lakers team featuring two All-Star low-post bigs.

Well, they hired D'Antoni to run a pick and roll based offense with bigs who were theoretically great at it. Except they weren't and Nash died

I wrote a big effort post on reddit about how 90s and early 2000s basketball, basically how guys like Kobe and Iverson are still all-timers despite how ineffecient they were compared to the current NBA, but mainly it just shows off how much better then NBA is to watch these days

quote:

I feel like this is a lot like the recent question about Iverson vs Isaih Thomas. The 90s and early 2000s was a very different type of basketball from what is played nowadays. Court spacing PFs were rare, let alone spacing Centers. Games were played at a much lower pace, so players had less opportunities for transition baskets. Isolation was the main brand of basketball, so stars back then were expected to create shots by themselves and rarely through the motion of the offense. Pick and Rolls were rarer, and even then tended to be different from the where they get run nowadays. Shooters were worse in general (excluding the short 3pointer years). 15 years ago, 35% from deep was enough to be considered a 3pt specialist.

I also really want to emphasize how different the modern NBA is from the 90s and early 2000s. The 2004-05 Suns revolutionized the NBA with their fast paced style of play (as well as their use of screens and using the 3 point as a major focus of the offense). That year the Suns had a pace of 95.9; This year there are 17 teams that play at a faster pace than that. They scored 110 pgg that year, 7ppg more than the 2nd place team(Kings with 103ppg). This year, they would be 4th and the 2nd place Kings would be 19th in the league. In 04-05, teams averaged 15.8 3Pt attempts a game, now they shoot 26.8 a game. The Suns 3pt crazy offense took less 3s than league average this year (24.7 vs 26.8).

These number are even more jarring if you go back a few years, look at Iverson's MVP season. The Kings lead the NBA in PPG at 101.7 PPG, good for 23rd this year. The Kings 1st place pace of 94.7 would be 23rd this year. The starting guards on the 1st Team All NBA shot 41% and 42% from the field. The league averaged 13 3PTA a game, and 2 teams shot less than 10 a game.

Stars also played way more minutes back then, Zach Lavine leads the NBA in MPG at 37 mpg, playing under a coach who is notorious for overworking players and playing them too many minutes. In 00-01, that Lavine would be 38th in mpg. We all talk about how much those extra minutes burden players nowadays and leads them to be worse and less efficient, well back then, thats how everyone played their stars. Shaq, who notoriously came into camp extremely out of shape in 00-01, averaged 39.5 mpg.

It was a very different time

Not in there, but also FTA/G are near an alltime low, the last 6 seasons are the bottom 6 seasons in FTA/G

Also, Pace is no where near all-time highs, so don't worry about inflated stats, we are still 5 possession per game below the majority of the 80s, and 11 below the alltime high of the 73-74 season

Rick posted:

Lakers fans really don't need pity this year anyway. Maybe the Lakers fans who thought before the season this was a playoff team and after the first ten games, a home playoff team, because they're in massive meltdown mode at the moment. Or the ones who only have a single game memory and think Russell and Randle are the worst players on Earth now because they don't remember the Pistons game on Sunday. We might have actually needed some pity if Magic Johnson wasn't too busy to be the team's GM if you believe the latest Jeanie Buss gossip (which I don't but whatever), and thankfully he's endorsed the young players so Jim and Mitch still have some time.

But most of us realize that this is going to take time and despite not getting wins, there's generally something positive to take away from almost every game against non-contenders. This is better than last year where Byron Scott would cut the legs out from under the youth, so maybe one in three games was positive, or the year before which was a wasted season due to Randle's injury. Ingram's slowly getting better offensively and has even started to show the ability to bounce back from a rough start and still end up putting up a pretty efficient line. Randle's had like, a bad week, but that comes off a month where he was the only consistent good player on the team.. D'Angelo's on the young shooter roller coaster which can be rough to ride sometimes but it's still a lot smoother than last year. Zubac . . . well after seeing him two games I'm pretty sure he's Ralph Sampson Jr. The vets are a mixed bag of inconsistency, but the team has money (despite pearl clutching about the contracts they've signed) going forward, a contract at every salary slot, and a coach who looks pretty good, and a GM who rips people off (when not desperately trying to keep the title window open) and drafts well, and ownership that in practice is a lot more stable than gossip implies. The team is also generally very entertaining.

I don't necessarily think this is a future championship team in the making (at least with what's apparent now) but I feel hopeful that we're not heading to Kingsville, population 20-38 wins every season for almost two decades with no road to the playoffs. Of course they could still end up there, but there's hope, which didn't really exist under Byron Scott or D'Antoni's last year.

Yeah, this just about sums up my feelings as well. The Lakers have transitioned from a team desperate for any talent to a team that has hope one of their young players can blossom into a superstar. They have three guys who could, and a decent team around that. They play an entertaining brand of basketball, even if the game to game watchability is varying.

I think we've also seen just how important Larry Nance is to the team, since the defense has gotten so much worse since he was injured, but he is finally going to be back this weekend.
