how would this happen exactly, can the CDU knife her in a leadership spill or do German parties have primaries?

It won't. Merkel is still popular enough that it would take something much bigger to push her out of power. The AfD, the far-right party that would presumably benefit, is a political pariah that the other parties won't touch.

Funny enough, the neoliberals are loving the center-left in France too because of Emmanuel Macron, who's formed his own party and is basically splitting the center-left vote, ensuring a second round of the right-wing guy who wants to cut entitlements and likes Russia and hates foreigners and the far-right lady who wants to keep entitlements and also likes Russia and hates foreigners.

The PS polls so horribly that it's more like they're the one sapping votes from Macron rather than the other way around.

Major development in the Fillon merdestorm. For those who don't speak French, the Fillons have now been accused by the National Financial Prosecutor's office of "escroquerie aggravée, faux et usage de faux", which if my high-school level French is correct means something like "aggravated fraud, forgery and usage of forgeries". The charges relate to inconsistencies in Penelope Fillon's time sheets when she was 'working' for her husband, investigators suspect the time sheets were falsified. I don't understand enough about the French legal system to really know but that sounds like it greatly increases the chances of one or both of the Fillons going to big boy jail.

the race was a 3-way contest between LePen, Fillon and Macron as a consequence of hollande's incompetence making PS less popular than cholera. before macron got momentum the most likely second round was between a thatcherite and a fascist. but fillon's campaign imploded due to penelopegate and melanchon has been rocketing up the polls at hamon's expense so there's sort of a three-tier race: macron neck-and-neck with lepen, fillon and melanchon tied for second, and hamon at the bottom, sinking towards the towards the no-names like the two (!) trotskyists. fillon seems to have hit a floor of a little under 19% and as of a week ago melanchon plateaued just behind him, if the latter can continue/resume hoovering up hamon voters he has a shot of getting into the second round. polling predicts that whoever gets into the second round with lepen beats her. melanchon's candidacy is interesting in that he's the only candidate other than lepen who appeals to the anti-euro vote; he's threatened a 'plan b' (frexit) if the euro treaties aren't "democratically re-founded", which is a perfect piece of populist rhetoric in that it sounds vaguely radical but doesnt actually commit to anything whatsoever, so voters can project whatever eu reform or dissolution they want onto it.
