I'm not watching all that but I think maybe subtle was the wrong word. Like in Friday the 13th and other movies like it the message is clearly "don't do a sex or smoke a drug teenagers", but they don't come off as tryhard as movies like babadook. Like imagine Jason having a bunch of flashbacks discussing his motivation for killing the teenagers, or having one of the teenagers have a monologue where they lay out exactly why they think the monster guy is killing them. They have fun with it and just get to the tits+gore instead of stopping to make sure we are "getting" it, unlike babadook/it follows.

e: I mean yeah there are flashbacks that explain how he died but it's just explaining his origin, not overexplaining the "message". All i'm trying to say is babadook sucks OK.

the message of friday the 13th isn't not to do sex or drugs, it's simply showing sex and drugs, except the jouissance becomes manifested in the figure of the killer, the embodiment of death drive

i liked babadook

i interpreted it as a psychotic reaction to the loss of the father function, in lacanian terms the natural result of the foreclosure of the name-of-the-father

basically every horror movie is way better and makes way more sense when analyzed through the lens of psychoanalytic theory IMO

Well that's what I learned from them, because almost everyone who did those things got brutally murdered shortly afterward.

Anyway I get no enjoyment from thinking about movies and writing words like jouissance and considering psychoanalytic theory, I just want to be entertained. Otherwise it feels like a homework assignment, not a movie.

way i see it horror movies should be judged on the whole point of them first and foremost which is to be scary. that is build by music visuals pacing and emotional tone not by story or message babadook is good cause the monster looks spooky and makes creepy noises and the actress convey her growing emotional instability really well. if one is a good film as well thats great but i wish filmmakers could get the basics of the genre down before they start trying to transcend it ya know

its like trying to make a great film out of a porn it starts off at full staff and midway is some hardcore gonzo poo poo but by the end is the characters fully clothed just talking about they relationship and feelings and really trying to say something about sexuality and intimacy or something hmm actually i would probably watch that

if you brain derives satisfaction from analyzing things or finding meaning in films, why not equip it with better tools to do it with?

i personally find films more enjoyable when i can watch them and enjoy them on several different levels at once.

also homework and school are both cool and fun

i found VHS 2 and the new blair witch to be very scary and enjoyable simply at the level of scaring me, i didn't get much out of those films other than a severe case of the heebie-jeebies

Babadook did have some OK jump scares but any enjoyment of them was destroyed by the ear-piercing endless screaming, particularly from the kid who, while you can't expect much from child actors, was especially bad imo. The scene in the car was making me wish there actually was a monster that would come and shut them up.

Anyway to go back to the original topic of the VHS movies, I hope we can all agree that no matter what you thought of the first two, the last one VHS Viral was god awful and completely unmemorable (aside from being bad).

So what you're saying here is the kid played his part perfectly... He was supposed to be annoying as all gently caress simply to get you on the side of the mother as she slowly breaks down mentally. You were essentially put in the same position as her and ended up hating him too.

Babadook was two hours of screaming.

Let the Right One In was a movie about boys who found a way to always be half naked.

Trollhunter was fun.

It does.

It's already been completed and shown at some festivals; it's called SiREN. IMDB shows a USA release for December 2.

So I guess Lily is a Siren, not a Succubus, although since her name is Lily she seems to be referencing a Lilin, which is also a Succubus.

You should have posted the trailer. It looks like Asylum took a shot at From Dusk til Dawn on a budget slightly lower than the average Youtube skateboarding video.

Channel Zero is showing on Syfy, it's free to view on their website. It uses actual creepy pasta from the internet as the basis for its stories, and each season will be a new story. the production quality is great

If you like found footage horror, As Above So Below is probably the best film of its kind. It's like indiana jones meets blair witch

It was directed by John Dowdle, they guy who made The Poughkeepsie Tapes (which was never officially released I don't think), which was one of the earlier found footage films made around the same time as the first Paranormal Activity (while the genre was rising in popularity). It's the source for this gif:

He also directed Quarantine, the shot-for-shot American version of [REC], and Devil, that stuck-in-an-elevator-with-satan movie.

I think probably the worst example of the found footage genre is the god damned slender man movie (Always Watching), which pretty much just recycles a collection of found footage tropes everyone's already seen in much better movies.

that was not a good movie. It was supposed to be a horror movie but it had the tonal sensibilities of a Spike Lee cop film.

Nope I rewatched it just last night, it's done mockumentary style. Reminiscent of Dateline & A Current Affair
