The mention of a Prospero remake thing is extremely curious, considering it's a project that Valve worked on for a couple of years alongside Half-Life that by all accounts never really went anywhere, despite having some promise and innovative ideas for its time (the basic premise of a central library of "worlds" or games pretty much turned into Steam). I mean, how do you remake something based on seven in-dev screenshots, three pieces of character concept art and a few snippets of text?

Mythologizing your personal fan-fiction about what could have been until it turns into a personal mission, I reckon.

Aww, what? If this is the one that had that hilarious 'purple monster suit' motif, I'm kind of very disappointed with the final result. It's like they simultaneously tried to pretty and ugly them at the same time and now it's just off-putting.

Also, I can absolutely assure you Bowsette (and a number of variations on that general theme) was already a Thing That Was Done, but Nintendo added one transformation item too many to the Mario series and the internet collapsed. There has been an average of several hundred images being made per day for close to a week now.

If I'm reading the little blurb correctly, they're starting from those mods and concatenating everything together, then they plan to streamline and fix bugs in those, then they plan to also replace all the NPCs. They apparently removed some of the more egregious elements of some of the other mods they're incorporating, so, there's that I guess.

I do enjoy his videos from time to time, but it really deserves an upfront warning, a chunk of his content consists of actively seeking out aggressively terrible mods. So just imagine all of the worst poo poo in modding (insensitive jokes, bizarre fetishes, unironic nazi poo poo), and know that all of that is sprinkled throughout. I don't think he's an rear end in a top hat, but he is terribly British, which seems to be an automatic handicap in handling sensitive topics. So feel free to skip those parts if you want. The rest is pretty good from what I recall.

I mean, this being the mods thread, I assume people are generally aware of all that, but it seemed worth mentioning. Just in case the romhack video icon with eight-bit penises and a little pixel klansman didn't clue you in.

One of the nice things about most of the monstrosities this thread digs up is that you can glance at an image, have a reaction of horror/disgust/amusement/whatever, and move on with your day.

I assure you, there are absolutely people out there writing thousand-page novels full of dry, lifeless, clinical prose about their highly specific fetishes. Brevity is the heart of humor; it tends to cease being as amusing when you realize there are sixteen million more words describing the same thing over and over again because it cranks the author's hog.

So, to hopefully button this up quickly (fat chance, but-), 1) NATO is often conspiratorially cast as some mysterious cabal working against US interests in US conspiracy theory circles, this has been true for decades, and it's also not regarded especially fondly by Russian circles, who I guess(?) probably agitate that line of thinking in the US opportunistically. HOWEVER, hilariously weird dystopian sci-fi has often cast the UN or NATO as the progenitor of some 'New World Order' government, it's not necessarily a political statement, and even it is it's one attributable to many disparate groups including certain subsects of tankies, anarchists, and libertarians, so it doesn't really tell you much. 2) I don't personally recall offhand Arthmoor making explicitly racist comments known, but he is a weird regressive libertarian with explicitly conservative views, so being relatively aware of and sensitive towards racial issues would also be somewhat of a surprise. And 3) 'what is wrong with modders', that's pretty easy to answer: Like a lot of internet subcultures, especially those focused on creativity and making things, modding is an attractive way for marginalized people to make their issues known and to attain some semblance of control and power. This can cut both ways, because there's a lot of cool, positive things that get made. Unfortunately, if a person has a giant boner for nazis it's also much easier and more socially acceptable to broadcast that and project power fantasies by making mods adding nazis to every war-game, because hey, legitimate historical faction. If a person has a boner for giant boners and little artistic talent then your options for expression are limited and doing a little modding and scaling work is a potential outlet for that, and that's at least relatively harmless, but the same outlet is attractive to people who find it appealing to, for example, keep underaged sex slaves, and then like-minded people will group together around these interests and form little cabals vying for incredibly petty amounts of power on modding forums. The terrible weirdos stand out more and are more memorable, and due to the general toxicity of the internet re: videogames, may be relatively more common in modding than some other places.

basically the short answer is that people are terrible and there's nothing wrong with the mod scene that isn't an expression of existing, known issues with people and the internet

Some of these problems, especially the personnel churn, can probably be attributed directly to the apparent general toxicity of the work environment itself, given the outward clues of waves of people quitting, the offices being raided in relation to tax crimes, and the repeated increasingly weird appeals to fringe alt-right ideas and symbols.

Granted, I understand those issues might be outside of the scope of a mod to address. :v:

Discendo Vox posted:

I think you might be getting some info crossed- whatever its other problems, Starbreeze didn't have a remotely chuddy reputation, and the investigation was insider trading, not taxes. The waves of people quitting, etc, were pretty much all centered around Bo Andersson. This Eurogamer article describes maybe 70% of the events in question. Whatever other bad decisionmakers were involved (and there were other very bad decisionmakers involved), Bo is generally understood to be the person who managed to take a remarkably (perhaps undeservedly) successful company and drive it inexorably into the ground.

Fair enough on not remembering the crime in question correctly.

As for the other bit, I don't assume the entire office to be assholes or anything, but several things that looked like winks, nods, and nudges started occurring (plot increasingly composed of conspiracy theory wildness, an 'ok' symbol for your multiple tiers of Trump mask, the H3h3 character pack which is sort of an inscrutable move even if you ignore it coinciding with that channel shifting towards appealing to internet chuds at around that time). If this was some weird tangential blip in the game's long, troubled lifetime, then feel free to just append a footnote to the other more visible issues, I guess, but I contend that poo poo is there and looks like more than coincidence.

E: Also, apologies for the tangent, but that felt worth clarifying.

Oh, this thread has 180 pages. Nevermind.

There is a contingent of people out there determined to turn everything they play into softcore titillation at all times. You can at least sort of understand it in, say, a TES game, where the depth of options available to you lets you set up custom bodysliders and then consult a ten page manual of key combinations to arrange literally any sex scene you like with your lizardman who hangs dong or whatever. It's a bit more abstruse (and funny) when it's, say, SS13, where you've essentially just committed to a worse sexting experience because you get sprites to mechanically represent things, alongside the threat of a clown robusting you at any time. It's just loving wildly hilarious when its poo poo like 'here's this dos strategy game with a charmingly rear end-ugly art style, let's throw some motherfucking tits on this motherfucking earth defense force'. To be fair you could almost be forgiven having that perception if all you had to go on was video clips of the droning, foreboding ambiance constantly foretelling death and doom while the player optimally lobs blaster bombs into the darkness.

But then you play it and your rear end-backwards rookies are all panicking and running around all goofy with their arms held out and somehow shooting lasers 90-degrees sideways out of the barrel and the fact that it's a draining and difficult tactical experience is often overshadowed by just how dumb everything is, all the time.
