IIRC pretty much all xcom mods are actually for openxcom (the source port) which is currently the first game only. So look at the mod list on their site for some ideas. The pirate mod xpiratez is definitely for openxcom and outside of being slightly porny it's supposed to be pretty decent but I haven't really played it so I can't say for sure myself.

The primary reason that Unity has a bad reputation is that if you make a game with the free version you need to have their splash screen but if you are serious enough to buy it you don't so a lot of trash has the Unity branding front and center while the ones with serious effort don't.
