That seems excessive. Why do they need first and last month's rent on top of a deposit? Check your local laws, that might be against the law.

This is really big, good job. If you can get your car fixed cheaply (and it's safe to drive) then by all means, get it back on the road and save yourself a bunch of money. Insure it for liability only, take the remainder and start a SmartyPig or something like that. Set a monthly goal and hopefully when your car calls it quits you can have a nice little nest egg to either buy another used car or put a down payment on a newer used car.
